WASHINGTON — After months of on-again, and off-again negotiations, a bipartisan economic stimulus deal appears to be on the horizon. While nothing is official, optimism swept Capitol Hill Wednesday that something could be passed by the end of the week. The bill would not only provide economic relief but also keep the government open through 2021. Funding for the federal government officially runs out Friday night at midnight. STIMULUS CHECKS INCLUDED The biggest news is that stimulus checks appear to be included in the bill. While nothing is confirmed, Republican Senator John Thune of South Dakota told reporters that the checks would be around 0-0 per person, which is about half as much as last time. Whether or not you are eligible for a stimulus check will likely depend on your income, just like last time. WHEN COULD YOU GET IT? If Congress is able to pass a bill by Friday night, checks could theoretically be deposited into millions of accounts by New Year's Eve. That's because unlike last time, the IRS has already built the computer program to distribute checks and staffers have experience. This is what Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said back in August about how quickly he could send out the checks. "I can have them out immediately," Mnuchin said. "If I could get that passed tomorrow. I could start printing them the following week," Mnuchin told reporters at the White House in August. "I can get out 50 million payments immediately," Mnuchin added. Just like last time, if the federal government does not have your bank information on file, debit cards and paper checks would likely take several more weeks. 1651
WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court is making it easier for the president to fire the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The high court on Monday struck from the law that created the agency restrictions on when the president can remove the bureau’s director. The decision doesn’t have a big impact on the current head of the agency. Kathy Kraninger, who was nominated to her current post by the president in 2018, had said she believed the president could fire her at any time. 495

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is assembling a team of top lawyers in anticipation of court challenges to the election process that could ultimately determine who wins the race for the White House. The legal war room will work to ensure that elections are properly administered and votes correctly counted. It will also combat voter suppression at the polls, identify foreign interference and misinformation, and educate voters on the methods available for casting ballots. The effort reflects the extent of the preparation underway for an already divisive presidential contest in November that could produce significant court cases over voter access and the legitimacy of mail ballots. 723
WASHINGTON (AP) — A second Republican senator has come out in opposition to filling a vacant Supreme Court seat before the Nov. 3 election. And Speaker Nancy Pelosi is asserting without details that the Democratic-led House has “options” for stalling or preventing President Donald Trump from quickly installing a successor to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska says that “for weeks, I have stated that I would not support taking up” a potential nomination as the presidential election neared. “Sadly, what was then a hypothetical is now our reality, but my position has not changed.” 629
