Breweries around the country are leading the charge to save more water, while keeping the same great taste. MillerCoors in Colorado has been taking on water conservation one barrel at a time.MillerCoors has been known as the Rocky Mountain beer, using snow-melted water to brew their beer for decades. "We collect a lot of snow throughout the winter; that snow is now melting and flowing down Clear Creek,” says Ben Moline, senior manager of water resources and environmental compliance at MillerCoors. The rushing water from Clear Creek is used not only by MillerCoors to brew beer, but the entire city of Denver, too."Being a large brewery in a metropolitan area, it’s our responsibility to be a good corporate citizen,” Moline says. “To make sure that we use water most efficiently. So that as the Denver area grows, there is water available for other people."The company brews 10 million barrels of beer a year. Currently, their water use is just below 3 barrels of water use per every barrel of beer produced.Beer is 90 percent to 95 percent water. Usually, it takes about five to six barrels of water per every barrel of beer. So, MillerCoors is conserving about two barrels each time.Since the 1950s, MillerCoors has been leading the way in water conservation."We do that by tracking water throughout the entire brewery,” Moline explains. “We are making sure we are not wasting water or spilling water. We make sure we recover as much water as we can and return it back into the Clear Creek system."What people don’t realize is that a majority of American breweries share the same water as the rest of the surrounding communities. When there’s a drought, like the 2015 drought in California, breweries experience a major hit in that state. In order for a drought not to effect MillerCoors, they have filled two large reservoirs with water next to their brewery for emergencies. They could continue brewing for three years if they had to use only the water from the reservoirs.Moline says there’s a great demand for sustainable beer. The competition among breweries across the country to use less water is heating up. "Without great water, you can't brew great beer," Moline says. 2196

Attorney General William Barr is not sending the "principal conclusions" of special counsel Robert Mueller's report to lawmakers Saturday, multiple congressional sources and a DOJ official tell CNN.In a letter to lawmakers Friday, Barr wrote that he may be in a position to share the principal conclusions "this weekend."Barr wrote in his letter that throughout the investigation, Justice Department leaders never told the special counsel a proposed action should not be pursued. The completion of the special counsel's investigation marks the end of one of the most dramatic chapters in Donald Trump's presidency, one that led to numerous criminal charges against and guilty pleas by some of his closest associates. The conclusion of the investigation, however, opens a new chapter into the fallout from the report -- a potentially fraught political battle over the extent to which its contents are made public and further investigations from congressional Democrats. It's too soon to say what Mueller's report will ultimately mean for the President, but surviving the investigation without being subpoenaed for a sit down interview with the special counsel's team is a significant triumph for Trump and his legal team. It's not clear what Mueller uncovered about Trump's involvement or advance knowledge, if any, of WikiLeaks' release of damaging information about Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. The special counsel's findings on the question of obstruction of justice are also unknown, but Trump's allies will likely argue anything short of a criminal indictment proves the President did nothing wrong. 1624

Buckingham Palace says Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, will no longer use the titles "royal highness" or receive public funds after a deal was struck for them to step aside as senior royals. The palace says the couple will repay some 2.4 million pounds of taxpayers' money that was spent renovating their home near Windsor Castle. 345

Artificial intelligence is being used by companies around the world, allowing many stories to go cashierless.Mike Fogarty, founder of Choice Market, says great food, service and quick check-outs are essential.“Currently, we have the ability for folks to order online on an app and use one of our self-checkouts back here,” Fogarty says. “We also have a traditional point of sale over here.”In six months, Choice Market plans to introduce a cashierless system using artificial intelligence technology.“Using cameras, sensors and other things within the store to monitor what’s being taken off the shelf, what a customer is walking out with, and ultimately, charging it to their credit card or the app,” Fogarty explains. However, Choice Market isn’t the only store doing this. Amazon Go stores are popping up across the country.“Many other retailers, including ourselves, are looking at this as a way to really enhance the customer experience,” Fogarty says. “And [in] my opinion, you will see this in almost every retailer in the very near future.”As far as jobs go, Fogarty says he doesn’t plan on letting any employees go once the new stores open. 1161

California's Joshua Tree National Park on Wednesday will become the latest casualty of the federal government's partial shutdown, closing campgrounds due to health and safety concerns over near-capacity pit toilets. With a quarter of the federal government employee workforce beginning 2019 out of work or working without a paycheck, agencies from the National Park Service to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Smithsonian museums are feeling the pinch.Unlike some previous government shutdowns, when national parks closed entirely, gates have remained opened under the Trump administration, leaving parks severely understaffed.Joshua Tree, more than 792,000 acres of national park nestled between Palm Springs to the south and the town of Joshua Tree to the north, will remain open during the shutdown but its popular campgrounds will close at noon Wednesday, according to the National Park Service."The park is being forced to take this action for health and safety concerns as vault toilets reach capacity," the park service said."In addition to human waste in public areas, driving off-road and other infractions that damage the resource are becoming a problem."The National Park Service also said the shutdown prevented it from making staff available to "provide guidance, assistance, maintenance, or emergency response.""Any entry onto NPS property during this period of federal government shutdown is at the visitor's sole risk," the park service said this week.Trash collection has stopped along with road and walkway maintenance.Rattlesnake Canyon will close to reduce the number of search and rescue events for rangers already spread thin because of the shutdown, the park service said. The shutdown has also left a stinking mess at Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in eastern California.Yosemite, the nation's third most-visited national park, remains open but various campgrounds as well as snow play areas are "closed due to human waste issues and lack of staffing," according to its website. On the Yosemite Twitter account on Sunday, officials said a "lack of the restrooms and resulting impacts from human waste" forced the closure of the campgrounds. "People entering closed areas are being cited," the tweet said. The visitor center and museum at Yosemite are closed and emergency response times may increase during the shutdown.Kristen Brengel, vice president of government affairs for the National Parks Conservation Association, said the shutdown not only hurts the parks but also surrounding communities that rely on an estimated million a day from tourism."It's really a big deal for Joshua Tree," she said of the campground closings. "This is a very popular season for people that come there."Brengel said staff shortages had created a sense of "lawlessness" in the parks."People are bringing in dogs and drones and there are instances where people aren't following the rules and it is not good for the wildlife and the environment," she said.Joshua Tree Superintendent David Smith, in a statement, thanked the "local businesses, volunteer groups, and tribal members" who have stepped up to collect trash and maintain grounds during the shutdown."This is a reflection on their efforts and the park is very fortunate to have a community that exhibits the kind of care and concern witnessed over the last week," he said.David Lamfrom, director of the California Desert and National Wildlife Programs of the National Parks Conservation Association, said the volunteer efforts can't supplant the work of the park service."People are walking off trails, bringing their dogs," he said. "People are trampling and destroying the things they want to preserve without knowing it. ... People are camping where they want or showing up really early or late at certain watering holes so animals like bighorn sheep won't come down to drink."Key parts of the federal government have been impacted by the December 22 shutdown, including the departments of Homeland Security, Justice, Interior, State and Housing and Urban Development. The shutdown began after President Donald Trump was unwilling to back down from his demand for billion for his long-promised border wall. The figure was a nonstarter for Democrats, leaving Congress at an impasse. 4336
