Social media dominated the top apps of the year.On Tuesday, Apple unveiled its list of the most downloaded iPhone apps of 2018. Of these, 189 were designed in a way to appear to be local news outlets.The Tow Center said in 2020, that number has grown considerably to over 1,000 such sites.While many local newspapers have folded in recent years, the opportunity for news stories driven by algorithms to get traction with a community has grown.A New York Times investigation spotlighted groups such as Metric Media, Locality Labs, Newsinator, Franklin Archer and Interactive Content Services. These organizations run hundreds of sites that appear to look like traditional news outlets.“It is becoming an increasingly common campaign strategy for PACs and single-interest lobbyists to fund websites that borrow credibility from news design to help advance particular agendas,” according to a report by the Tow Center. “The proliferation of politically-funded local news sites across the political spectrum raises questions about how these entities represent themselves to the public, and how they are categorized by search engines and social platforms.”Adding to the concern of these outlets, according to the Tow Center, is that 90% of these stories are “algorithmically generated using publicly available data sets or by repurposing stories from legitimate sources.”The remaining 10% of these stories?“Many of the stories are directed by political groups and corporate P.R. firms to promote a Republican candidate or a company, or to smear their rivals,” according to a New York Times report.Not only are these sites growing while a number of legitimate news outlets are struggling to stay open, but they are increasing during an era of misinformation.Just last week, the FBI and intelligence community officials warned Americans of growing foreign influence in US elections. These foreign actors, according to leaders from the FBI and national intelligence agencies, say misinformation is being weaponized in hopes of influencing the election.And with misinformation spreading on the internet, trust in the news media as a whole has dropped significantly in recent years. According to Gallup polling, the number of Americans who say they trust the news had dropped from 72% in 1976, to a low of 32% in 2016. More recent polling places the proportion of Americans who trust the media at 40%.But one area of the media that Americans say they trust is their local news. In 2019, 67% of Americans said they can trust their local paper, which is up from 61% in 1998. Gallup also found last year that 74% say they trust their local TV news, and 65% say they trust their local radio news, both up slightly from 1998.While most Americans trust their local news, according to Penny Abernathy, nearly 1,800 local newspapers have closed since 2004. Worse, Abernathy told Poynter that these closures have created “news deserts” in small communities.“And when you lose a small daily or a weekly, you lose the journalist who was gonna show up at your school board meeting, your planning board meeting, your county commissioner meeting,” Abernathy told Poynter.With local newspapers getting the ax across the US, these pink slime sites have been able to take advantage of the credibility of local outlets, even though their reporters are not local to the areas they serve, and that’s assuming the story was not written by a computer.The Tow Center published a list of these so-called pink slime sites. Ron Helus had been set to retire in the next year from the Ventura County, California Sheriff's Office when, responding late Wednesday to a call of a shooting, he entered the Borderline Bar & Grill.It would be the last act of a 29-year law enforcement veteran described as hardworking and dedicated and, now, as a hero.Helus was among the first officers through the door at the Borderline. He died trying to stop the rampaging gunman, who killed 11 others in the attack in Thousand Oaks, California."He went into save lives, to save other people." Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said of Helus, his voice breaking."He was totally committed, he gave his all, and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero," he said.Helus succumbed to his wounds at a hospital, police said. (KGTV) - A concert at the Belly Up Tavern this Saturday will raise money for a program dedicated to kids with special needs.Banding Together will hold their 7th annual fundraiser from 12-4 pm on February 24th. The concert features three local bands, and one special, surprise guest artist.The bands are Dr. Seahorse, the Grinnell Trio and Jungle Poppins.But the real stars will be the kids and young adults from the program, some of whom will perform with the bands on stage."It's thrilling for them," says Banding Together Co-Founder and Director Angela Meier. "They hear that people like the Rolling Stones have performed a show there and now they get to as well!"The program uses music therapy to help people with special needs come out of their shell. Meier says it's inspiring and amazing to see how they progress."I've had students who have difficulty putting sentences together," says Meier. "And using rhythm and music, all of the sudden they're able to sing whole sentences."In addition to individual and small group classes, Banding Together runs 42 "Jam Sessions" throughout the year, where the students and musicians join together to make music."It's not just that it's making them feel good, but it's giving them self-esteem," says Meier. "It gives them social skills and prepares them to go out into the community and give back."The concert is open to the public and will also feature live auctions, silent auctions and other fundraisers. All the money goes to fund scholarships and to pay for the jam sessions. Seniors are among the fastest-growing population of new cannabis users. However, the stigma behind cannabis could be keeping some seniors from getting much-needed relief from chronic pain, as well as sleepless nights.Greg Saweikis is one senior finding relief through cannabis. Since he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2017, he’s undergone rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. But after a suggestion from a friend, Saweikis started taking cannabis, too.He takes CBD and THC pills by Stratos. He even uses a cannabis cream for his hands.  “It seems like it really has been helping,” Saweikis says. “I sleep a little bit better.”  But Saweikis knows not all people his age and older are open to using cannabis.  “I think there is a large stigma, still,” he says. “And it's just a holdover from the 60s and the whole, you know, from demonstrations and all of that kind of thing.”  Since the 1930s you've been told there's something really bad about cannabis that's always going to be there in the back of your head.  Leland Rucker is editor of Sensi, a magazine for adults with a cannabis emphasis. He says the stigma is still attached.  “And I talked to one woman who it really helped her start to sleep. She's all of a sudden sleeping much better, but she was embarrassed about,” Rucker recalls. “She was embarrassed to talk to people about it, because she had been so cannabis negative all of her life.”But Rucker says more older Americans are exploring, encouraged in part by their children and grandchildren.  “And so, you have to find out what the reality is,” Rucker says. “And I think that now that it's legal, we've given people that opportunity.”   1725
