BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is pushing for the restructuring of major state-run news portals - including cctv.com and xinhuanet.com - to allow them to "establish a modern enterprise system," launch initial public offerings (IPO) and abandon the "iron rice bowl" concept.Ten major news portals are involved in a pilot restructuring project: the websites of state broadcasters China Central Television, Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, Beijing's qianlong.com, Tianjin's enorth.com.cn, Shandong's dzwww.com, Shanghai's eastday.com and Zhejiang's zjol.com.cn among others. The websites are currently affiliated to news organizations run by central and local governments.According to a symposium on the restructuring work Monday in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province, the restructuring plans for people.com.cn and xinhuanet.com have been approved. The pilot project, initiated last October, covers shareholding reform, establishment of a modern enterprise system and IPOs to "strengthen the competitiveness" of the news portals.According to the symposium, the website operators have actively engaged in the development of search engines, cell phone news services, cell phone TV services, Internet TV, e-commerce, online cartoon games and other new media areas, which have strengthened their capacities. The operating income of people.com.cn and xinhuanet.com have witnessed "big growth," the symposium said.Domestic commercial news portals like sina.com.cn and sohu.com are listed overseas. The step is part of Chinese government's efforts to reform China's cultural industry in a bid to promote Chinese media and cultural enterprises' global influence and boost the nation's soft power.

BEIJING, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese auto maker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group is ready to inject 900 million U.S. dollars operating capital into Volvo on top of the 1.8 billion U.S. dollars purchase price, Geely chairman Li Shufu said Tuesday."We should not only inject money into Volvo, but also endeavor to improve Volvo's profit-making capability," Li said at a press conference to discuss the Volvo takeover. The Zhejiang-based Geely signed a deal with Ford Motor Co. Sunday in Sweden to acquire the U.S. auto giant's Volvo car unit. The photo taken on March 23, 2010 shows Volvo assembly plant in the suburbs of western Belgian city of Gent. China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group signed a deal worth 1.8 billion U.S. dollars with Ford Motor Co. in Goteborg of Sweden on March 28, 2010 to acquire the U.S. auto giant's Volvo car unit"Geely is Geely, while Volvo is Volvo. Geely will not produce Volvo, and Volvo will not produce Geely," said Li, also the founder of the firm, adding that Volvo would keep its unique characteristics after the takeover.Li said Volvo's biggest problem was its small production scale and high research and development expenses, adding Volvo should try to increase production and sales to cut costs.

SHANGHAI, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Environment authorities in Shanghai will ban burning waste straw in the suburban agricultural areas to ensure air quality during the World Expo period. The Shanghai Municipal Environment Protection Bureau will use satellite remote sensing to monitor the burning of waste straw during the Expo period from May 1 to Oct. 31, the bureau said in a statement Saturday.Statistics show that about 170,000 hectares of barley, wheat, paddy and rape are planted in the suburban agricultural areas of Shanghai, which can produce up to 1.3 million tonnes of waste straw every year, according to the bureau.Burning waste straw will produce carbon dioxide and other pollutants to pollute the air, it said.To help dispose of the waste straw, more than 40 organic fertilizer plants in Shanghai have planned to use more straw as auxiliary material in fertilizer production, the bureau said. The Shanghai World Expo, with the theme of "Better City, Better Life," is expected to draw 70 million visitors from around the world during the six-month period.
