SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is getting its first round of Pfizer vaccines to fight the coronavirus next week, but the vaccine is recommended for those 16 years and older.Many parents are concerned about what that means for their children and going back to school."Essentially the Pfizer vaccine wasn't studied in kids under 12 but we are going to see more study in them," Dr. Abi Olulade, with Sharp Family Medicine said.While Pfizer is working on a child-safe vaccine, their competitor Moderna started testing their vaccine on 12-17-year-olds Thursday.Dr. Olulade sees the newly approved Pfizer vaccine as a lifeline, "we have a weapon now in the war against this virus and we're all breathing a huge sigh of relief."The vaccine a relief for our healthcare system swamped with coronavirus patients.When a shot is approved and safe for kids, Dr. Olulade said it's important parents have their kids vaccinated."Vaccines have a very long and proven safety record in kids," Dr. Olulade said. When asked what is the risk of waiting to get your child vaccinated, she replied, "death and long term effects of COVID, overwhelming our healthcare system and preventing us from providing care for other conditions that don't just stop because of COVID and so I think everyone should really really think about making sure that they get vaccinated to protect all of us."She said it's important also to get children vaccinated because they are proven super-spreaders of the virus and susceptible to harm from it."We just saw in Los Angeles the first child that died from Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome which is a really scary thing that is new with this virus," Dr. Olulade said.Dr. Olulade said we will have to wait and see if schools require the vaccine moving forward.If your child has allergies, she said make sure you talk with your doctor before vaccinating your child."To say that this is a breakthrough and a victory for science is probably an understatement," Dr. Olulade said about the vaccine.A weapon, she said, is only helpful if we all use it, "when you get vaccinated, you're not just protecting yourself, you're protecting other people and children who may be going through really terrible things like cancer, so it's our responsibility that we all have to protect those who are more vulnerable." 2311

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans looking to switch careers or get back to work after coronavirus-caused layoffs have a way to get free job training this summer.San Diego Continuing Education is offering free classes in 75 different areas, many of which are focused on high-demand jobs."During difficult economic times that we are about to enter, short term intensive career education is the way to get America back to work," said SDCE President Dr. Carlos Turner Cortez.Anyone in San Diego is eligible to take the classes. SDCE offers training certificates in healthcare, welding, information technology, cybersecurity, culinary arts, clothing, automotives, and more.For Richard Sanchez, who lost his job during the pandemic, it's a chance to start over after a layoff."I'm already 38 years old," Sanchez said. "To have this opportunity helps people out to get a new job and change your career."According to a recent report by SANDAG, around 460,000 people in San Diego have lost their jobs since March 7. The report says unemployment could be as high as 30%.Dr. Cortez said people who are looking for a job should look into continuing education first."It's incumbent on us to make sure that students who are coming through our program are developing the skills necessary to be successful in these career pathways," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego businesses are still waiting for any information on the resumption of indoor services, such as indoor dining, and the long wait has some frustrated and at a breaking point.“The first five years were hard, but I never thought it would be a pandemic that brought me to my knees,” said Yuda Phia, who has owned Time Out Sports Tavern in downtown San Diego for 10 years.Piha and wife Sarah got married days before the pandemic forced the shutdown, and the restaurant's first closure.Sarah Phia explained the extra measures they've taken to meet or exceed the guidelines laid out the first time they reopened, including Plexiglas dividers and staff retraining.Sarah, a graphic designer, made the signage throughout the establishment that enforced mask wearing and social distancing.Setting up tables on the sidewalk isn't really an option for Time Out, which is located downtown on Broadway near 7th Avenue along a busy two-way street that gets constant bus and truck traffic and has narrow room for patrons.County officials have said they expect new state-directed timelines in the coming days for reopening businesses, but Supervisor Jim Desmond said Tuesday that he doesn't know what they will be.Desmond has advocated for the safe reopening of businesses, but he said the county’s hands are tied as control lies in the governor's hands. The decision is also entirely independent from the state’s watch list, which San Diego County was removed from on Tuesday.The orders were issued concurrently, but not together, so there is no automatic trigger point when businesses would reopen.Desmond wishes the state would reauthorize local control so that the county could make some reopening decisions independently going forward. 1758

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County has taken its first step into the dreaded "purple" tier of the state's four-tiered COVID-19 reopening plan, leaving just one week to determine if the county will be forced to shutter nearly all of its nonessential indoor businesses."It would take a significant change in trajectory," Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Wednesday.State officials reported that San Diego County had an unadjusted new daily coronavirus case rate of 8.7 per 100,000. The adjusted case rate dropped to 7.4 per 100,000, above the baseline of 7, qualifying the state for the purple, or most restrictive tier of the reopening plan. Last week's unadjusted case rate was 7.8 per 100,000.In recent weeks, the region had an unadjusted rate well above the purple tier guidelines, but a significant effort to increase the volume of tests had allowed for an adjustment to bring it back to the red, or substantial, tier.According to the reopening plan, a county has to report data exceeding a more restrictive tier's guidelines for two consecutive weeks before being moved to that more restrictive tier. A county then has to be in that tier for a minimum of three weeks before it may move to a less restrictive tier.San Diego County has been in the red tier for months, skirting but ultimately avoiding the purple tier, which would necessitate the closure of almost all indoor operations of nonessential businesses. Recent trends have shown a slow but steady increase in infection numbers."People are tired of the pandemic and letting down their guard," Supervisor Greg Cox said. "We need to do better. We need to do a lot better and we can do better."If the county cannot drop its adjusted daily case rate below 7 per 100,000, indoor operations in locations such as restaurants, museums, places of worship, breweries and retail businesses will have to either close entirely, move to outdoor operations only or modify in other ways.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said retail operations, including indoor shopping centers, will be limited to 25% of building capacity, down from the current 50%. Schools, unless they have already restarted in-person learning, will be restricted to distance learning. K-12 schools already in session can continue, Wooten said.The county's testing positivity rate actually improved, declining 0.3% from last week to reach 3.2%, but remains high enough for this metric to remain in the orange tier.The state's health equity metric, which looks at the testing positivity for areas with the least healthy conditions, increased from 5.1% to 5.3% and entered the red tier. This metric does not move counties backward to more restrictive tiers, but is required to advance.The state data reflect the previous week's case data to determine where counties stand. It is usually updated on Tuesdays, but this week's update was rescheduled because of the election.County public health officials reported 404 new COVID-19 cases and three new deaths Wednesday, raising the region's case total to 58,106 and the death toll to 904.Of the 15,345 tests reported Wednesday, 3% returned positive, maintaining the 14-day rolling average of positive tests at 3%.Of the total number of cases in the county, 3,983 -- or 6.9% -- have required hospitalization and 921 patients -- or 1.6% of all cases -- had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.Seven new community outbreaks were also confirmed Wednesday, two in business settings, three in restaurant/bar settings, one in a grocery setting and one in a health care setting. Over the previous seven days, 25 community outbreaks were confirmed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police arrested a man who tried to rob a downtown bank Saturday.Police said a 34-year-year old white man entered the Chase Bank on West Broadway and handed a note to a teller saying that he was robbing the bank shortly before 3 p.m. The teller was able to keep the suspect inside the bank until San Diego Police arrived on the scene. Police took the empty-handed suspect into custody without incident as he was walking out of the bank. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.  585
