BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The state-owned assets in China's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises (SOE) reached 2.01 trillion yuan (297.40 billion U.S. dollars) by the end of June, up 10.71 percent from 2008, China's state-owned assets regulator said on Thursday.Nearly a quarter of the SOEs have state-owned assets over 10 billion yuan each, while six have state-owned assets over 100 billion yuan, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission said in a statement on its website."China's state-owned capital has been flowing towards big companies with international competitiveness," said the statement. Some 30 central SOEs are listed as Fortune 500 companies. They are in sectors such as telecommunications, power generation and petro-chemicals.The number of China's central SOEs is 123 in August this year, down from 196 at the beginning of 2003.

BERLIN, July 29 (Xinhua) -- China is gradually learning and absorbing ideas on human rights that can grow on its soil, and remains opposed to attempts by the West to impose its standards on China, says Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying.In a recent interview with the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit, Fu said it seems "controversial and illogical" that Western countries acknowledge China's economic success and contributions to efforts against the global financial crisis, while "definitely" turning a blind eye to China's political progress. It seems as if the West wants to say that China has achieved all these without the leadership of the government and the Communist Party, maybe in total anarchy, Fu said."I still remember when I was an interpreter in the 1980s, human rights was always on the menu in our dialogues and our European guests brought lists of names with them," she said."Thirty years later, China has moved on, and so much has changed. In 2004, protection of human rights was incorporated into China's constitution. Many relevant laws and rules have been amended accordingly," Fu said. However, European delegations still come to China with the same stance, accusing China in a commanding way, Fu said."I really don't hear much mentioning of China' s human rights progress," she said.Yet, those political extremists seem to be presenting the whole picture of China's human rights for European countries, she said.Fu believes that to know the real China, it's not enough to "single out things you are interested in, or only listen to people who talk your talk."The most important is to look at the benefits of the majority of the people, she said.

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) - Flooding was temporarily eased on the Yangtze River as the Three Gorges Dam on China's longest river saw water levels slightly down from its crest stage, the nation's flood control authority said Saturday. The water level at the dam fell to 158.54 meters as of 8 a.m. Saturday, 0.32 meters lower than its highest level of 158.86 meters which took place on Friday morning, according to data from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief HeadquartersThe water was flowing from the upper stream of the river at 31,000 cubic meters per second, said the office in a statement on its website. However, the water level was still 13.54 meters above the alarm level and is expected to increase again due to rainfall and water inflows from tributaries in the upper stream, the statement said. The office warned that the water level at the dam is very likely to exceed the historical level, if it rises again. Some of the country's other major rivers were also witnessing water levels surpassing their warning levels, including the Jialing River, Hanjiang River and Huaihe River, the statement said.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said China was at a "crucial stage" for flood control during an inspection tour in central China's Hubei Province that began July 23.He ordered local governments to adopt scientific measures to be well-prepared for "more serious floods and disasters" .Floods in China this year have left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of Friday, according to the flood control office.

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has said that low-rent and affordable housing construction should be sped up to meet people's basic demands for living. The construction of public low-rent housing seeks to offer middle and low-income urban residents with adequate housing and affordable rents. This not only helps curb skyrocketing property prices in some cities, but is also conducive to bridge the income gap and assist in urbanization, Li told a national meeting which concluded on Saturday. While speaking at the two-day meeting, Li urged local authorities to create favorable taxation and financing policies to support such housing programs. He noted that private capital is also welcome to join the mission to diversify fund raising channels. Li urged different localities to explore their own methods based upon their unique conditions to carry out housing construction.Li also said that the construction and distribution of low-rent housing should be transparent and fair.Exorbitant housing prices in some cities have become a major complaint of Chinese citizens. Home prices in 70 large and medium-sized cities rose by 12.4 percent year on year in May, the National Bureau of Statistics said this week. However, the growth rate was 0.4 percentage points lower than that of April, as property sales in major big cities dropped following a string of government measures to rein in prices.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 9 (Xinhua)-- Premier Wen Jiabao has urged rescuers to race against time to search survivors after catastrophic mudslides hit a northwest China county and left nearly 1,300 people missing Sunday. At least 127 people have been confirmed dead and 1,294 others were reported missing in rain-triggered mudslides in Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province, early Sunday morning."For those who were buried under the debris, now it's the most crucial time to save their lives," Wen stressed during a meeting held at the county government late Sunday night. He said the search and rescue work must not be halted as long as the possibility for finding survivors still exists. He instructed the rescuers to locate places where most people were buried or trapped and to clean the sludge as soon as possible.Wen also demanded that traffic, power supply and telecommunication in the county should be resumed as soon as possible."And people who have been evacuated should be taken good care of," Wen stressed.
