Scientists believe they have discovered a new species of whale in Mexico. The team was taking underwater video and audio samples of three beaked whales near Baja California. They work with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society near the San Benito Islands, about 300 miles from the U.S. border. They originally were looking for what animal was making an unidentified sound recorded in 2018 in the area.Experts in the field of beaked whales now say the scientists’ observations don’t match anything seen before, and they are “highly confident” the video shows an entirely new species, according to a press release.“We saw something new. Something that was not expected in this area, something that doesn’t match, either visually or acoustically, anything that is known to exist,” said Dr. Jay Barlow in a statement from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. “It just sends chills up and down my spine when I think that we might have accomplished what most people would say was truly impossible – finding a large mammal that exists on this earth that is totally unknown to science.”Scientists are now using genetic sampling to confirm what the scientists found is really a new kind of beaked whale. The discovery of a new species of beaked whale proves how much mystery there is left to discover in the oceans that our captains, crews, and research partners fight to defend,” said Peter Hammarstedt, Director of Campaigns for Sea Shepherd. 1442

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - Some local stores are having a hard time keeping up with the demand from senior shoppers who are showing up for the special early morning hours amid concerns over COVID-19. Over the phone, a Costco employee in Santee told 10News that more than 1,500 seniors showed up on Tuesday and the store hasn't been that busy since Christmas or Thanksgiving. Video was shot by 10News employee Alanna Light and her 73-year-old husband, Jeff, shows a line of customers wrapped around the building.LISTINGS: Who is open for business in San Diego during stay-at-home orderThe Lights showed up just after 8:30 a.m. for Costco’s new 60 and older shopping hours that started this Tuesday and will reportedly be available every Tuesday and Thursday from 8 to 9 a.m. They say they waited in line for almost an hour. “It went very quickly. Once you got inside it was surprisingly empty,” says Jeff.Costco's one of the growing number of stores offering special senior hours. Others on the list include Ralph's, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's.RELATED: Grocery stores with hours for seniors amid coronavirus pandemic“Everyone was cheerful. Nobody was complaining. Nobody was griping,” adds Jeff.Alanna adds, “As soon as we got in, they had a long line that went straight to the paper products and it was very organized.”They say they were able to get toilet paper and water, but no paper towel. Regardless, they were pleased with how Costco handled it. RELATED: What's open during California's coronavirus 'stay at home' order“I was really impressed,” she tells 10News.10News reached out to Costco’s media relations for comment about the senior crowd sizes. We’re waiting for a response. 1693

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Northern California say a 70-year-old man has died in one of the three giant wildfires burning around the San Francisco Bay Area. The man had been reported missing and authorities used a helicopter to reach the location where they found him in the rural community of Last Chance in Santa Cruz County. The area was under an evacuation order and Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Chris Clark said it was a stark reminder of the need for residents to leave the area. The fatality was the seventh fire death in the state in the last week that has seen 650 wildfires across California, many of them sparked by lightning strikes. 693

SANTA ANA, Calif. (CNS) - The Orange County Board of Education announced Wednesday that it has decided -- by a 4-0 vote -- to file a lawsuit against Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Public Health Officer to seek a court order that sets aside the state orders preventing public schools from holding in-person classes and resuming services on campus. The vote came during a closed session Tuesday night, according to a statement. The California Supreme Court has interpreted the California Constitution to require that California school children have a constitutional right to substantially equal opportunities for learning, and the governor's order will unequally burden the most underprivileged families of California, the bard's lawyers said in a statement. The attorneys, Tyler & Bursch, LLP, of Murrieta in Riverside County, said they agreed to represent the board pro bono "to protect the vulnerable children in California."The lawsuit will also be supported by the nonprofit legal organization, Advocates for Faith & Freedom."California children have a constitutional right to both an education and equal protection under the law. The governor denied them these rights and did so without adequately considering the disparate impact these restrictions would have on the disadvantaged," said attorney Jennifer Bursch of Tyler & Bursch, LLP. "We brought this lawsuit to protect the single mom and her children, children whose parents do not read or write English, and children with special needs."The governor's ban on in-person learning will cause tens of thousands of kids to fall through the cracks and, in many cases, will be harmed for life."The Orange County Board of Education earlier this month approved a non-binding recommendation for reopening schools that would not require physical distancing or wearing masks. One of the county's largest districts, Santa Ana Unified, almost immediately rejected that advice, as did other school officials."The board majority's recommendations are not binding and La Habra City School District will not open our schools under these conditions," said that district's superintendent, Joanne Culverhouse. "The health and safety of our staff and students will guide the decisions we make for reopening our schools." 2281

SANTA BARBARA (KGTV) - Mandatory storm evacuation orders were lifted Tuesday morning for areas burned in Santa Barbara County's fires.Residents of some vulnerable communities were ordered to leave Monday night by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.By Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service determined the critical levels of rain did not arrive, lowering the risk of debris flow. The SBCSO said several weather systems are due in the area this week but none appear to be a mudslide hazard.Evacuation and debris flow maps will be updated as needed, the SBCSO said. 593
