SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A World War II veteran is being honored not only for his service to our country but to the San Diego community.With the help of former students, current students, and staff at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, the library was dedicated to World War II veteran Tom Rice. The lifelong Coronado resident was an Army paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division on D-Day. He was the first to jump out of his C-47 after it crossed the English Channel.RELATED: Retired Chula Vista teacher grateful for war hero's inspirationRice taught U.S. government in the Sweetwater Union High School District for more than 30 years, mostly at Hilltop High.The surprise was unveiled to Rice on Thursday. "Everyone has given me their grace, and I have nothing to return but just my presence, and that was it. The two women say Rice didn't talk about the war when he was a teacher; it wasn't until years later they learned of his bravery. "We are honored to know him and honored by what he did for us as students and what he did for our country," said Cappos Hardy.Rice is well known for returning to Normandy to reenact his D-Day jump in honor of those who never made it home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An inmate who left a San Diego re-entry facility on Wednesday was apprehended in the North County..California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said 51-year-old Larry Johnson “walked away from the Male Community Re-entry Program (MCRP) facility” on Boston Avenue in Barrio Logan Wednesday night.Staff at the facility learned Johnson’s GPS device “had been tampered with” at around 10:30 p.m. Johnson was last seen in the afternoon on an “approved pass to attend work.”Local law enforcement agencies were notified of Johnson’s disappearance, and CDCR agents fanned out to find him.At around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, CDCR officials said Johnson was taken into custody at a hotel in Carlsbad without incident. He will be transported and rehoused at Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility, officials said.CDCR officials said Johnson was in the midst of a 4-year sentence for one count of attempt to use an ID of another to obtain information, which was his second-strike offense.Johnson had been scheduled to be released to probation in May 2021. 1087

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman visiting San Diego to spend time with her daughter is dead after being struck by a car near San Diego State University Friday evening. San Diego Police Department says the woman was hit at the 4800 block of College Avenue just south of Montezuma Road in the College Area at approximately 7:45 p.m. The 48-year-old female victim was transported to an area hospital where she died. Police say the victim was not using a crosswalk when she was struck in the number two northbound lane of College Ave.The driver fled the scene according to SDPD but returned about an hour later.The driver is a 40-year-old female and detectives say they are still determining if this will continue to be classified as a hit-and-run.Police expect the intersection to be shut down for several hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An hours-long standoff between San Diego Police and a burglary suspect ended late Thursday night in the Marina area.The standoff, which started at about 4:30 p.m., occurred in the area of West Harbor Dr., between Kettner Blvd. and Pacific Highway. Police called Emergency Negotiation Team and SWAT officers, and a Psychiatric Emergency Response Team to the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An off-ramp drivers have used for decades to exit the northbound state Route 163 onto Friars Road is gone for good.On Wednesday, Caltrans permanently closed the off-ramp that leads from northbound SR-163 to eastbound Friars Road. The exit provides direct access onto eastbound Friars Road, with a straight shot to SDCCU stadium and the thousands of homes being built that direction. It also gets drivers away from the traffic heading toward the Fashion Valley Mall. 493
