CLEVELAND, Ohio - A local Tuskegee Airman who served in World War II was honored and celebrated in a special way on Thursday.Asa Newman who was part of the Tuskegee Airmen— the first African American unit to fly combat airplanes in World War II—recently turned 102 years old.To celebrate this American hero, community members lined the street as law enforcement honked their horns and a crowd waved across the street to Newman.The Aurora Post of the American Legion was there to honor Newman who was surrounded by family and friends.Newman grew up in Cleveland and attended East Cleveland High School. After World War II, he moved to Chicago and attended college at Roosevelt University. He was one of seven children, with three brothers and three sisters. CLEVELAND, Ohio - Angel Negron Rodriguez lights up when he’s dancing."It’s fun,” said Angel.It's his saving grace."Sometimes my eyes hurt a little bit,” said the fourth-grader.Especially now when he spends so much time remote learning."You have to memorize the steps and then when you’re done it’s like easier to concentrate."It’s a method Angel’s teacher, Sharon Lenahan, uses every single day in her class at Almira Elementary School in Cleveland."When they get fatigued you can tell because they will find a couch, they’ll find a bed, they’ll find something comfortable, you’ll see their head kind of finding a pillow,” said Lenahan.That’s when she knows it's time for a Break Dance. It’s a series of videos that allow the kids to follow along with instructors and learn dance moves."You really do see the students recharge after a little brain break, you really do,” she said. "Their energy and motivation are back.”Other Northeast Ohio teachers who think their students might need a brain break, breakdance can join in."As an organization who took great pride in having people physically connect in a respectful and meaningful way, it became very apparent to us that we were going to have to evolve how we accomplished our goals,” said Jojo Carcioppolo, the founding executive director of Dancing Classrooms Northeast Ohio.Carcioppolo says Dancing Classrooms has had to significantly change the way it connects with students and teachers for now because of COVID, so they created breakdance."It’s called Break Dance because breaks, reset, engagement, attention, and knowledge,” said Carcioppolo.And the company is doing all of this for free."All of the breaks are three minutes or less, and it just really gives the teachers the ability to put on a break and let students stand up, shake it out,” said Carcioppolo.Students like Angel are dancing out their fatigue at home all across Northeast Ohio until they’re able to bust a move in person."It’s fun, then when we’re done I can concentrate better on the class,” said Angel.This story was first published by Amanda VanAllen at WEWS in Cleveland, Ohio. 2115

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio — In an assignment given out at Roberts Middle School in Cuyahoga Falls, students had to choose who they felt were "most deserving" to be saved from a doomed Earth from a list based on race, religion, sexual orientation and other qualifications.The assignment, called Whom to Leave Behind, asked students to rank the 12 people from "most deserving" (1) to "least deserving" (12). Cliff Robinson, a former UConn star and longtime top sixth man in the NBA, has died. His death was confirmed by UConn. No cause of death was given, though former Huskies coach Jim Calhoun said Robinson had a stroke 2 1/2 years ago. Nicknamed Uncle Cliffy, Robinson played 18 seasons in the NBA and helped the Portland Trail Blazers reach two NBA Finals. Before that, he was the centerpiece of Calhoun’s early teams at UConn. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A driver was detained late Tuesday evening after military officials said he tried to enter Naval Base Coronado property without authorization.The incident occurred at around 10:15 p.m. at the Stockdale Boulevard gate at Naval Air Station North Island, near Third Street and Alameda Boulevard.Kevin Dixon, with Naval Base Coronado Public Affairs, said a vehicle tried to enter the base but was stopped by barriers.Dixon confirmed the driver was detained, but no other information on the incident was released.The investigation forced the closure of the gate for several hours.There were no reported injuries to any military personnel. 668
