BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Monday urged Communist Party members and government officials to put more efforts in finding and correcting problems that may hinder scientific development and taint the image of the Party.     Xi, also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a meeting on the implementation of the Scientific Outlook on Development.     In September 2008, the CPC launched a one and a half year campaign to study and apply the Scientific Outlook on Development, a doctrine adopted by the Party at the 17th CPC National Congress in October 2007.     A total of 11 inspection teams were organized recently to check the results of the campaign in 16 provinces and autonomous regions as well as six central government departments including the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Agriculture.     Xi said the campaign had achieved obvious effects as many Party members had deeper understanding of the Scientific Outlook on Development.     However, Xi stressed Party members and officials still needed to do much more work to fully realize the problems in their work and learn to solve them.     "Coping with the financial crisis, ensuring steady and rapid economic development and the stability of society should be an important part of the campaign," he said.

MACAO, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Up to 123 candidates from various civil groups in Macao to participate in the 4th Legislative Assembly Election of the Special Administrative Region (SAR) will vie for 12 directly-elected seats in the Assembly, the Macao Post Daily reported on Tuesday.     A total of 16 groups completed their registration procedures over the past six weeks for joining the SAR's direct legislative election which was scheduled to take place on September 20, according to the daily.     The SAR's legislature has 29 seats, 12 of which are directly elected and 10 indirectly elected while the rest will be appointed by the SAR's chief executive.     Registered candidacy commissions could submit their political manifestoes and lists of candidates to the authorities before Monday. In accordance with the law, the commissions need to acquire a minimum of 300 endorsements from registered voters to be accepted as a legitimate competitor in the upcoming election.     The officially verified lists of the candidates will be announced on July 28 at the earliest.

SHIJIAZHUANG, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The brand of Sanlu Group, the dairy company embroiled in China's tainted-milk scandal, was sold at an auction Tuesday for 7.3 million yuan (1.07 million U.S. dollars), court officials said.     An unidentified individual entrepreneur from south China won the bid at an auction in the Shijiazhuang Intermediate People's Court in northern Hebei Province. No further information about the bidder was released.     The auction started at 7 million yuan and drew three bids from only two bidders.     The "Sanlu" brand was worth 14.9 billion yuan in 2006, according to the China Brand Asset Evaluation Center.     Sanlu Group, which was based in Shijiazhuang, had been China's leading seller of milk powder for 15 years until the melamine adulteration scandal broke last September. The group's revenue hit 10 billion yuan in 2007.     The company's tainted baby milk powder was found to have caused the deaths of at least six children and sickened more than 300,000others.     Beijing-based dairy producer Sanyuan bought the core assets of Sanlu, which went bankrupt in February, for 616.5 million yuan at an auction on March 4.     Also Tuesday, Sanlu sold 51-percent stakes in three dairy companies for 22.8 million yuan. BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso here on Thursday, calling on the two sides to cherish achievements made in bilateral ties.     "Since my visit to Japan in May last year, related parties on the two sides have made every effort to implement the consensus and decisions agreed upon during the visit, and had attained important progress in promoting the strategic and mutually-beneficial relations between China and Japan," Hu told Aso at the Great Hall of the People.     "These achievements have not come easy and should be cherished by us," said Hu.     Hu noted that as the global financial crisis spreads, trade between China and Japan had declined obviously. He urged the two sides to take effective measures to put bilateral trade and investment back on the track of stable growth as soon as possible.
