SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Details are beginning to emerge about the woman who was shot and killed inside a Church’s Chicken in the South Bay Wednesday night. Maribel Merino-Iba?ez, 28, was killed while working her shift at the Otay Mesa West restaurant. “I believe in God and I believe that one day justice will come his way and that won’t bring my daughter back, but I know that there will be justice for her,” said Emma Karla Merino, the victim’s mother. "I just want justice, because nobody can bring my sister back. Her body is gone, but she is here in my heart and she’s never going away,” said Gabriela Merino, the victim’s sister. Someone who knew Merino-Iba?ez told 10News she had worked at the Church’s Chicken for nine years and was a shift manager. A vigil is set to take place at the restaurant Friday at 6 p.m. Another victim was identified as Mario Rojas. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he underwent surgery and is now in stable condition. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of people rallied outside of the County Administration Building Monday and called for the reopening of San Diego County businesses. The rally was held as new coronavirus-related restrictions took effect across the county over the weekend, forcing businesses and entities like restaurants, gyms, and churches to shutdown their indoor operations.“Some of us are in danger of losing our homes. We’re definitely in danger of losing our businesses. And we just had enough; enough is enough,” said Laura Crivello, a business owner that attended the rally. Many business owners also shared their personal stories and how the restrictions have crippled their businesses and livelihoods. They were joined by the County Supervisor Jim Desmond and the mayors of El Cajon and Coronado. All three expressed their support for business owners.“This is a very important moment for San Diego County and California. And it’s not really a choice between opening businesses and saving lives, and we can do both, we can do both at the same time,” Desmond said.“The museums, the churches, the restaurants, the gyms should all be allowed to reopen in the capacity they had last week,” he added. 1205

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite pleas from health agencies to stay home during the holidays, millions of Americans are taking to the skies.A crowded airport and long-awaited hugs are exactly what health officials did not want to see this holiday season."The airport, I felt, was a little more crowded than expected," traveler David Miller said. "People apparently want to travel in spite of COVID."Whether it's to see an elderly family member, not break tradition, or make up for lost time, travelers packed the San Diego International Airport Thursday."They had to cancel Thanksgiving. They were coming home, and we didn't see them then, so we wanted to see them now," Miller's wife, Jan, said.Health officials have been warning for weeks that Christmas travel is like a 'Super Spreader' of the COVID-19 virus. Gatherings will cause a surge in the already short-staffed hospital systems, and that the death toll will increase. But even with the direst public health warnings, the TSA says around one million people have gone through their checkpoints every day since Dec. 18, 2020.Jan and David Miller flew into San Diego Thursday afternoon."I had concerns, probably greater than my wife, that perhaps flying wasn't a safe choice. However, my wife said I'd be living with a very depressed wife if we didn't come to see our children in California," Miller laughed. So it turned from a guilt trip to a Christmas trip. But the Millers say they are taking serious precautions."Our son thought maybe it would be safe for us to quarantine some and spend time apart from them in a separate location, so we're doing that in an Air BnB," David Miller said. They will first spend a little time away so that the rest of the time, they can enjoy all that San Diego has to offer together."The weather's a little bit more cloudy than what we're used to in San Diego, but obviously, it's much warmer than Ohio, where it is snowing right now," Miller said. 1943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Demolition is underway on the former Anthony’s Fish Grotto restaurant along San Diego’s Embarcadero. The destruction of the building started earlier this week at the location on Harbor Drive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time since mid-July, several San Diego County businesses were allowed to resume indoor operations.Under Gov. Gavin Newsom's new tiered system for businesses reopening during the pandemic, several more industries can welcome customers inside, but with modifications and or capacity limits.Danny Daniels owns Barbers Den in Chula Vista. He was thrilled to have customers back inside Monday afternoon."This is my passion, I love barbering, I love everything about barbering," said Daniels, who has been cutting hair for nearly 20 years."I truly believe something as simple as a haircut can go a long way in making someone feel good," he added.Austin Campbell is the managing partner of Sola Salons Studios in San Diego. He owns and helps run 15 locations.Campbell is among the owners who traveled to the state capitol to protest the governor's second shut down back in July."On the first shut down everybody said, this is going to be tough, but it's the right thing to do, everyone just hunkered down and said we gotta get through it, but the second shut down, people took it; personally, they thought this was uncalled for, unfair, completely arbitrary and not researched," said Campbell. Many stylists said the governor's decision to allow salons to move services outside made no sense."The whole offer of outside hair, to be honest with you, was kind of a slap in the face of our industry," said Campbell, adding that inside was safer and more sanitary.Everything that the state recommended we could do, really pretty much was in complete contradiction to what everyone has been taught and been practicing for their entire careers," said Campbell. Salons don't have capacity limits, but social distancing and mask mandates must still be followed. Campbell said the impact of the shutdowns has been far more than just financial."A lot of people are not just financially struggling, but mentally, emotionally, professionally, the beauty industry is more than just a job; it's a true career and identity," said Campbell.Campbell said his salons employ roughly 600 people. Many have already moved out of state. He has a message for the governor."Our industry has been prepared for this long before covid existed, and we take it very seriously. We ask that before you shut down 550 thousand women, first generation immigrants, single mothers, you do a little more research," said Campbell. 2424
