Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the embattled archbishop of Washington, ending weeks of mounting speculation and rising anger over Wuerl's role in two clergy sexual abuse scandals. The Vatican Press Office announced the news Friday.Wuerl, who turns 78 in November, technically tendered his resignation upon reaching age 75, as all Catholic bishops and cardinals do. But cardinals are often allowed to serve until they are 80.While he maintained a relatively low political profile in Washington, Wuerl's resignation caps a stunning fall from grace for one of the world's most powerful Catholic leaders. The Pittsburgh native spent more than 50 years climbing the ranks of the Catholic Church, building a reputation as a loyal churchman and scrupulous teacher. Known as a key ally of Pope Francis, Wuerl sits on the Vatican committee that vets and appoints bishops around the world. 922
President Donald Trump is ready to oust Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster and find a new national security adviser before the North Korea meetings in May, multiple sources told CNN Thursday. The move may be delayed because there's no final decision on a replacement, sources say. The timing of an announcement is unclear -- one source said it could come as soon as Friday, though others say that is unlikely.White House press secretary Sarah Sanders pushed back on reports that McMaster may be headed out the door in a tweet, saying,"Just spoke to @POTUS and Gen. H.R. McMaster - contrary to reports they have a good working relationship and there are no changes at the NSC."Any delay in the move is also because McMaster is trying to nail down his next steps, one of the sources said. The shake-ups come as Trump signaled this week that he's prepared to dismiss aides with whom he's clashed as he works to surround himself with advisers more aligned with his populist agenda and freewheeling style. On Tuesday, the President fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and told reporters at the White House he was near having his ideal team."I'm really at a point where we're getting very close to having the Cabinet and other things that I want," Trump told reporters on the South Lawn on Tuesday, moments after announcing Tillerson's firing.Amid speculation about McMaster's fate, CNN has reported that the three-star general has been in discussions with the Hoover Institution. As recently as March 8, the White House was denying reports that McMaster was on his way out, with Sanders declaring on "Fox & Friends" that "General McMaster's not going anywhere."Several sources told CNN that the push for a replacement comes after months of personal tension between McMaster and Trump.Trump has privately expressed irritation with McMaster stemming from differences in "personality and style," a senior Republican source said. The two have never gotten along, and Trump continues to chafe at McMaster's demeanor when he briefs him, feeling that he is gruff and condescending, according to a source who is familiar with his thinking.Sources with knowledge of McMaster's standing in the White House have repeatedly said that he has been on thin ice for months. There was discussion in the West Wing about replacing him last fall, but he ultimately survived because officials, including the President himself, were skeptical about the optics of appointing a third national security adviser in less than a year, several sources told CNN. Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, resigned within a month of taking the job amid controversy over his contact with Russian officials.McMaster was also retained at the time due to the White House's challenge attracting top talent for jobs in the administration due to Trump's "blacklist" of individuals who have criticized the President, his personality and the Russia investigation, according to a senior Republican source. 2990
PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Southern California resident decided she's had enough of thieves prowling her neighborhood and took matters into her own hands -- and the help of a water sprinkler.Katie Camarena, of Porterville, says crooks have been stealing tools and other items from area cars."Our flood light didn’t seem to scare them off," Camarena said in a post on Facebook.Camarena took a different and more creative approach. She opted to cool off these overnight bandits using a sprinkler."We decided to have a little fun with a motion-activated sprinkler that has an impressive amount of pressure."The trap proved to be very effective. Ring video captured early Tuesday morning and posted on her Facebook page shows someone on a bike with their face covered roll up her driveway. The person reaches her truck when he's met with a powerful jet of water. Even the sound of the sprinkler sounds petrifying. The person on the bike quickly ducked, spun the bike around, and peddled off.Camarena's Ring video went viral leading to questions from users asking where they can get their hands on this super soaking theft deterrent."Many have asked where it’s from. Just got it on Amazon! Here’s the link: https://amzn.to/38aAE9Q," she posted. 1253
POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Take away the masks, temperature readings, and distance markers, and Canyon View Elementary in Poway looked like any other first day of school Thursday morning.Asked if they have been waiting for this day, one parent told ABC 10News, “Yes, for so long.”The Poway Unified School District kicked off their hybrid program consists of both in-person and digital learning for kids in grades K-5.Students will be in class for a maximum of 2.5 hours per day, and while It's a short day, parents like Chris Madrideo said it's enough."The two hours is perfect, [better] than nothing because at home it's been hard,” Madirdeo said.To ensure social distancing, half the amount of kids returning will be part of the morning session, the other half will take part in the afternoon session."We had a lot of parent meetings, I sent videos about what it's going to look like. We've had families do test runs so we're ready and we'll make adjustments as needed," said Canyon View Elementary Principal Jill Halsey. "We looked at what's working, and we want to take what's working and implement it here.”Desks inside classroom will be covered with plexiglass and six feet apart. The district’s communication director said if a student or staff contracts COVID-19 while involved in in-person learning, they'll be required to switch back to distance learning immediately. The school will then work with the health department to contact trace, notify and test, if needed, anyone affected.Families were also given the option to continue virtual learning. Halsey said at her school, nearly half of the student body will continue to learn from home full-time.The schools that reopened on Thursday: Canyon View Elementary SchoolHighland Ranch Elementary SchoolMorning Creek Elementary SchoolPainted Rock Elementary SchoolPomerado Elementary SchoolShoal Creek Elementary SchoolSundance Elementary SchoolSunset Hills Elementary SchoolTurtleback ElementaryWestwood Elementary SchoolThe other 16 elementary schools are slated to reopen on Oct. 12, according to the district’s plan. 2082
PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — Officials in Prairie Village say a garbage truck crashed into a house in Prairie Village Wednesday morning. Police said the driver fell out of the truck after turning onto Cedar Street from 83rd Terrace. The truck continued to roll and smashed into the corner of a home's garage. The homeowners were home at the time but were uninjured. A spokeswoman at Overland Park Regional Medical Center said the trash truck driver remains in critical condition."I opened the front door and the truck was barreling across my grass and all the sudden it hit and we shook,” said the homeowner, Rick Evrard.Michael Yates was remodeling a kitchen at a home across the street when he heard the crash.“All the sudden I heard the boom,” said Yates, “That’s when I looked out the window and I saw the truck was inside the house over there and the fellow was laying on the ground.”The man lying on the ground was the driver. Yates and Evrard ran to him to see if they could help him.“We got towels. He was bleeding profusely from his head,” said Evrard.Evrard was told his house is uninhabitable for the time being. The truck also clipped a gas meter and the gas was shut off for repairs. 1223
