SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A juvenile was arrested Wednesday for allegedly making a threat against a San Diego Unified School District high school. The juvenile was arrested at Serra High School for the alleged threat, according to SDUSD. The suspect told school police the comment was not meant to be taken seriously. While police deemed the threat non-credible, they determined the comment meant the definition of a criminal threat. The language of the threat and how it was issued was not immediately clear.RELATED: DA: Nine minors charged in recent threats to local schoolsClasses at Serra High were held on a normal scheduled Wednesday despite the report. There was reportedly no increase in police presence on the campus either.SDUSD official called for a press conference on Friday at 10:15 a.m. at the Education Center to address the increasing number of local school threats over the past month.Since the Parkland, Fla., school shooting in February, at least 24 school threats have been investigated at county schools.Of the threats, District Attorney Summer Stephan has charged at least nine juveniles."We can't assume that the threat is a joke," Stephan said. 1208

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report released by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection states wildfire acreage burned in 2019 is down 96% compared to 2018.Stating from January to August in 2018, 621,784 acres burned. In 2019, only 24,579 acres scorched during the same time period. On top of this, the U.S. Drought Monitor released a report Thursday showing most of California is out of the drought. San Diego is the only county fully highlighted in yellow, indicating it is 'Abnormally Dry'.A very stark contrast to 2018, where most of the map is covered in dark shades of drought. In August of 2018 San Diego was labeled in 'Severe Drought'.While the winter rain cured California's drought, it brought a new problem to firefighters. Tall weeds, and new growth act as kindling, launching fires, according to Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots. So we're not out of the woods.Historically San Diego has had some of it's biggest fires in the Fall and Winter, whipped up by Santa Ana winds. "Our fuels are going to continue to dry out an we're not going to be getting rain for quite a while longer so even though we've had the marine layer sticking in and that's really helped us, in the long run those heavy rains that we need, we're probably not going to see for several months," he said. "Late October is usually when we see the Santa Ana winds. We are expecting our normal winds this year. We still have an above average fire potential for San Diego for October and November."Shoots said neighbors must stay vigilant, and create defensible space around their home."I think it's important for everyone to remember most fires are human caused," he said. 1670

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A judge has ruled that the government can continue waiving environmental laws to proceed with construction of a U.S.-Mexico border wall.Judge Gonzalo Curiel issued the ruling Tuesday afternoon. The ruling allows 14 miles of border wall to be built southeast of San Diego. The ruling comes one day after the Washington Post reported that President Trump will visit border wall prototypes in mid-March. In early February, ABC News reported that the Center for Biological Diversity filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to protect endangered butterflies. Environmentalists claim the Quino checkerspot butterfly and a number of other species could be in danger if construction of the border wall continues. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a statement Tuesday afternoon that "A medieval wall along the U.S.-Mexico border simply does not belong in the 21st century.”Read the full statement below:“We remain unwavering in our belief that the Trump Administration is ignoring laws it doesn’t like in order to resuscitate a campaign talking point of building a wall on our southern border. We will evaluate all of our options and are prepared to do what is necessary to protect our people, our values, and our economy from federal overreach. A medieval wall along the U.S.-Mexico border simply does not belong in the 21st century.” 1440

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego doctor is leading a new national study that tests drugs designed to help coronavirus patients. If you tested positive for coronavirus this summer, there was nowhere for you to go unless you were sick enough to end up in a hospital bed. The ACTIV-2 Study hopes to keep that from happening."So this trial is specifically designed to find those agents to keep people from going to the hospital," Dr. Davey Smith said. He is the Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego and the Protocol Chair for the study."If your symptoms started within ten days and your test is positive in seven days, then you are eligible for the study," Dr. Smith said.UCSD had their first patient mid-September. There are two test sites, one at UCSD and another at Kaiser's Zion Medical Center. Dr. Smith hopes to expand to six test sites."We want to test eight drugs over the next year, maybe more. There are lots of pharmaceutical companies making better and better drugs," he said the goal is to keep people healthy."If I were to get sick and I would have something to prevent me from getting sicker that's number 1. Then the next good thing is maybe instead of having an infusion we'll have a pill or we'll have an inhaler."He said they need 2,000 participants to test each drug and will use a placebo to measure it's effectiveness.A national study, led by San Diego."Hopefully we can do our home city proud," Dr. Smith said. 1442
