BEIJING, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has called for strengthening efforts in ecological and environmental protection as the country strives for economic restructuring and improving people's livelihoods.Li made the remarks Monday at a meeting on the application of research results on China's environment. According to Minister of Environmental Protection Zhou Shengxian, during another meeting on Tuesday, the sulfur dioxide index is expected to drop 14 percent in 2010 compared with the 2005 level.Also, the index of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), a measure of water pollution, is expected to decrease 12 percent.China's 11th five-year program set out to reduce COD and sulfur dioxide levels by 10 percent over this period.However, Li stressed that China faced more pressure in environmental protection than any country in the world, since it was a developing nation striving for modernization and with a huge population of 1.3 billion.China should innovate its development mode and endeavor to make the two, development and environmental protection, promote each other, he noted.Li said the country should set up a people-oriented conception in environmental protection efforts, and carry out major projects regarding sewage disposal, waste processing and water environment in urban areas.Efforts would also be devoted to prevent and treat rural area's pollution problems and ensure the safety of drinking water and food, Li said.Li called for improving related laws and regulations and fully completing the government's responsibility in the environmental protection sector.

ZHENGZHOU, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Seven company executives were suspended from duty or removed Monday after 26 miners were killed in a gas explosion in an illegally operated coal mine on Dec. 7 in central China's Henan Province, according to the group's spokesman.Forty-six miners were working underground when the blast occurred at the Juyuan Coal Mine, owned by Juyuan Coal Industry Co., Ltd. in Mianchi County, Sanmenxia City. The company is being merged into Yi Ma Coal Industry Group.Deputy general manager, Li Jianxin, of Yi Ma Coal Industry Group, the mine's prospective parent company, was suspended from duty pending investigation. Li was in charge of the group's merger and regrouping, said the group's spokesman.Manager Yao Nianshou and four deputy managers who were sent by the group to Juyuan Coal Industry Co., Ltd. were also removed, he said.The spokesman said the decisions to discipline the executives have been approved by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Henan Province. The final punishment for those responsible for the incident will be decided based on the findings of the on-going investigation.Managers of the Juyuan Coal Mine did not obtain a license to excavate coal from the site in Mianchi County, where the explosion occurred. Mine managers also ignored an order to halt production, as the mine's operations are being reorganized as part of the merger.The mine had been known as the Suzhuang Coal Mine and was later re-launched as Juyuan when it was merged into the large state-owned conglomerate Yi Ma Coal Industry Group.Police said they arrested the owner of the mine, Suo Yonggang, who allegedly hid the bodies of the victims to lessen the casualty count. Suo fled the mine following the blast.Mine managers first reported that only 20 miners were trapped when the blast occurred. Provincial work safety authorities updated the figure to 33 and then to 46 as investigators found more bodies in the mine. Only 20 miners survived.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's coal mine safety watchdog said Wednesday that the nation would require all coal mines to be equipped with emergency shelter systems to protect miners before June 2013.Also, the country's State Administration of Coal Mine Safety (SACMS) has required all mines to complete installation of four systems, including coal mine monitoring, pressure fan facilities, water supplies, and communications before the end of this year.Further, centrally-administered coal mine companies and major state-owned coal mines must also install positioning systems for workers underground, said Zhao Tiechui, SACMS chief.Meanwhile, centrally-administered coal mines and major state-owned coal mines must set an example by completing the construction of emergency shelter facilities before June 2012, Zhao said.More than 2,000 miners were killed in coal mines last year in China. Though the fatalities were significantly reduced from the peak of nearly 7,000 deaths in 2002, the situation still remains grim.Just last month, a gas leak at a coal mine in central China's Henan Province left more than 30 people dead.

BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's express delivery topped 10 million pieces per day as of the end of 2010, ranking the third most deliveries in the world, the State Post Bureau (SPB) said on Tuesday.Some 2.4 billion pieces were handled in 2010, an increase of 1.5 times from five years ago. BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with Chi Jae Ryong, Ambassador of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to China, and held phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and ROK Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan on Friday.They exchanged views on issues including the situation of the Korean Peninsula, according to a statement released Friday night by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.Yang said China gives utmost attention to the exchange of fire between the DPRK and the ROK which happened days ago, and is very concerned about the development of the situation.The DPRK and the ROK should exercise calm and restraint, engage in contacts as soon as possible, and solve problems through negotiations and dialogue, Yang said."The pressing task now is to put the situation under control and prevent a recurrence of similar incidents," he said.Parties related should actively work for peace and facilitate talks, jointly safeguard peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula while adopting responsible attitudes, Yang said.Parties involved should work together for an early restart of the six-party talks, and push forward denuclearization process of the Korean Peninsula, Yang said.The DPRK, the ROK and the U.S. sides elaborated on their views on the current situation, and expressed the importance they attached to China's stance and their willingness to maintain contacts with the Chinese side.The ROK and the DPRK exchanged artillery fire Tuesday in waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, leaving four people dead.China on Friday also voiced its opposition to any military acts in its exclusive economic zone without permission, days before a joint military exercise between United States and ROK on the Yellow Sea."We hold a consistent and clear-cut stance on the issue. We oppose any party to take any military acts in our exclusive economic zone without permission," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement Friday.
