Those who will be recognized this year include the athletes and leaders who are using their voices and platforms to push for equality and justice.Alana Nichols is no stranger to adversity."I started off on a rocky foot, and I had every opportunity to go off the beaten path," Nichols said. "Whether that be drugs and alcohol or whatever that looked like or just hanging out with the wrong people."But Nichols says, every time, sports would reel her right back in. She was a fastpitch softball star and was on her way to play in college when a snowboarding accident left her paralyzed."In a moment my life was changed completely. I was hoping to go to college on a softball college scholarship; I had the world at my fingertips, and all of a sudden, I'm 17 years old and paralyzed," Nichols said.For a short time, Nichols lost her way without sports. Then, she discovered wheelchair basketball and says that's when she found herself again."That's one of the beauties and the magic about sport, is it makes you feel good," she said. "It makes you feel good to move, and everybody, regardless of their ability, should have the right and the opportunity to figure out how to move and to play."Fast forward to today, and Nichols' athletic resume is stacked: A three-time gold medalist, a dual-sport athlete in wheelchair basketball and alpine skiing, the first female American to win gold in both the summer and winter Paralympic Games."Sports absolutely changed my life, and it continues to benefit me in so many ways," Nichols said.Nichols is also a mother and is the current president of the Women's Sports Foundation, an organization that works to give everyone a chance to play."A lot of what we do is look at the general landscape of what's going on for girls and women in sports and asses the needs of what is not being met and help promote equality and justice in the sports world for girls and women," she said.This year's theme for the Annual Salute to Women in Sports is "Speak with Sport," which 2014 Olympic Ice Dance Champion Meryl Davis describes as celebrating what sports can do for the world."The world of sport, women in sport is so important and so getting a chance to come together and celebrate what sport can do for the world, uniting us and inspiring us is particularly important right now," Davis said. "I'm thrilled we'll get together virtually and do that."Davis started ice skating when she was five. There are about 6,000 restaurants in Queens County, according to the Queens Chamber of Commerce — and if indoor dining doesn’t resume, up to 3,000 may never open again.“For the last six months, it’s been very hard for everyone in the diner business, in the restaurant business. Especially for us,” said John Thanosopolous, who owns the Atlantic Diner in Richmond Hill.There are now multiple lawsuits against the city and New York state over not permitting indoor dining at city restaurants, despite every municipality around them being permitted to do so.“This is the knockout punch for us. This is the lawsuit. We didn’t want to do this. This is not us. We are workers,” said Rob De Luca, who owns De Luca Restaurant in Staten Island.Mayor Bill de Blasio did not address the status of indoor dining whatsoever during his Tuesday press briefing, though days ago, hinted an announcement could be coming soon.Governor Andrew Cuomo said other cities and towns were allowed to have diners indoors because their compliance was better than New York City’s.Without explicitly naming the mayor, the governor said local enforcement failed when bars were first permitted to re-open months ago. Ultimately that led state government to create a statewide task force of inspectors to take up the issue. Those working from home could soon have the option of moving their home temporarily to the island nation of Barbados.According to the Barbados Government Information Service, the country is working on a 12-month “Welcome Stamp” that would allow “persons to come and work from here overseas, digitally so, so that persons don’t need to remain in the countries in which they are.” Prime Minister Mia Amor Mattley said the concept is being refined right now.Barbados is an island on the southeastern side of the Caribbean.“But in order for those things (long-term travel to and from Europe or the U.S.) to truly resonate, what does it mean? It means that what we offer has to be world-class and what we continue to offer is world-class,” Mottley said.The prime minister also called on those living in Barbados to help by doing their part during the pandemic. “If the first tourist is a Bajan, then they must equally, also be the first promoter and the first protector,” she is quoted as saying.Barbados has reported 103 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic started, and seven deaths from the virus. The island has a population of just under 300,000.Her comments came during a reopening of a restaurant in St. Lawrence Gap on the south side of Barbados.Curfew restrictions in Barbados were lifted in July, and beaches and parks do not have limited hours.
