(KGTV) -- Police are asking for the public’s help after they say several suspects stole credit cards and used them to go shopping at Macy’s.Police say a house on the 400 block of Vista Way was burglarized on January 10. The suspects took cash and credit cards, according to authorities.Just hours after the burglary, police say the suspects used one of the victim’s credit cards at the Macy’s located in the Chula Vista Mall.Anyone with information is asked to call 619-422-8477. 507

(KGTV) -- Police arrested a 33-year-old transient in connection with a series of fires set in a river bottom area of Chula Vista since early summer.Chula Vista police said Alejandro Gonzalez was taken into custody Sunday after officers responded to a reported brush fire near the 1700 block of Fourth Avenue.According to police, Gonzalez was spotted by officers “walking quickly away from the scene of the fire.” Officers made contact with him and during questioning they found Gonzalez “in possession of several lighters.”Gonzalez was described as a transient known to frequent Chula Vista’s river bottom area.In a news release, police said: “During questioning by officers, Gonzalez admitted to intentionally setting several brush fires in the river bottom area over the past 5 months. Gonzalez claimed he was setting the fires due to hearing voices. Gonzalez was taken into custody by officers and later booked into county jail on multiple counts of arson.”Police linked Gonzalez to the following fires:May 24: 2300 Faivre StreetJune 14: 2300 Faivre StreetSept. 16: Third Ave. and Beyer St.Sept. 20: 1700 Fourth Ave.These fires erupted in the river bottom area since April, but investigators have not located or identified a person connected to them:April 30: Fourth Ave. and Beyer St.June 5: 1700 Fourth Ave.June 13: Fourth Ave. and Main St.Aug. 14: 100 Jacqua St.Meanwhile, Chula Vista police and fire investigators are still trying to determine who is responsible for setting a series of fires in the city from Sept. 17-19. CINCINNATI -- A Lebanon Correctional Institution inmate was sentenced to three years in federal prison for mailing threatening letters to President Donald Trump and other federal officials, authorities announced Monday.Rodney D. Cydrus, 48, mailed a total of five letters in January 2017 to the FBI and Federal Public Defender's Office threatening to injure them, federal judges and the president, according to court documents.In one letter, Cydrus wrote that he wanted to "go out with a bang" by killing or kidnapping a federal agent."As soon as I get out I’m going to get everybody I can in your office…Die Die Die…I promise my word I’ll get at least 30 of you before you kill me," one letter states.One letter also included a powder that turned out to be Cydrus' own medication, causing a HAZMAT response. "The federal officials whom Cydrus targeted have hard enough jobs as it is," U.S. Attorney Benjamin Glassman said in a news release. "Disrupting operations and creating an atmosphere of fear is a serious offense, and it’s important to deter this kind of intimidation campaign."Cydrus was an inmate at Lebanon Correctional Institution in Warren County at the time he sent the letters.A federal grand jury indicted Cydrus in February 2017. He pleaded guilty in January to one count of mailing threatening communications. He had faced up to 10 years in prison. 1389

Cigarette boxes sold across the United States soon will display a new court-ordered accessory.Starting Wednesday, tobacco brands have been ordered to put "corrective statements" on product packaging that clearly state the harmful health effects of smoking, according to court documents.The order follows a long and rocky road of litigation against the tobacco industry.It comes as a result of a 1999 lawsuit that the US Department of Justice filed against the country's largest cigarette manufacturers and tobacco trade organizations, claiming civil fraud and racketeering violations over the course of more than 50 years.In 2006, federal Judge Gladys Kessler ruled that the tobacco industry had violated civil racketeering laws and ordered companies to issue "corrective statements" on their packaging, on company websites, and in print and television ads. 865

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - After hours of listening to public comment, the Chula Vista Planning Commission decided to table and continue an item that would bring a new recreational storage facility to the city's Eastlake area. The proposed facility would store 80 to 100 vehicles, like boats or RVs, on land between Eastlake High School and Antigua, a gated town-home community.Homeowners begged the planning commission to not accept the plans for the facility saying it would be an eyesore for their properties and lower their property values. The property manager of Titan Storage also made his case before the commissioners, citing the need for the facility in a part of town that is growing quickly. RV owners asked the commission to consider accepting the plan because they say surrounding RV lots are full, forcing them to store their vehicles across town. Ultimately, three commissioners said they could not support the plan as presented and voted instead to continue the item to a future date, giving the storage company time to present a revised plan. So far, no date is scheduled for the next public hearing on this issue. 1143
