BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- China and Africa celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing Monday, outlining future efforts for greater development of the new type of strategic partnership.Addressing a reception marking the anniversary, Jia Qinglin, top Chinese political advisor, thanked all those who have contributed to the development of FOCAC, a platform for dialogue and pragmatic cooperation between China and Africa launched in October 2000.Hailing the establishment of the forum as a strategic decision by Chinese and African leaders, Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the mechanism of the forum has gradually improved and borne growing significance over the last decade.China and Africa have enjoyed increasingly frequent high-level exchanges, mutual political trust and trade relations. "China and Africa have come closer together. Our links have become stronger and our friendship has grown deeper. ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday made a five-point proposal on boosting ties with Greece during talks with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou, stressing that China is willing to work with the European country to combat the lingering financial crisis.Wen arrived in Athens earlier in the day, starting a three-day official visit to the country, the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.Papandreou held a grand welcoming ceremony for Wen after the Chinese premier's arrival.Wen said both countries were great civilizations in the history and the people of the two countries have always been amicable to each other. BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China shut down 1,355 small coal mines with a total production capacity of 125.19 million tonnes by the end of September as part of efforts to restructure its mining industry, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said Thursday.The latest figures indicate that the NEA had surpassed its annual target of eliminating 121.67 million tonnes of outdated production capacity this year.According to the NEA, 1,539 small and dangerous coal mines with 121.67 million tonnes of outdated capacity had to be closed in China this year to meet the country's requirement for preventing deadly accidents and reducing carbon dioxide emissions and pollution.The energy watchdog also said it would strengthen inspection on small coal mines for the rest of the year and ensure that the mining restructuring plan be completed as scheduled this year.China has long relied on coal to fuel its rapid economic growth. About three-fourths of its electricity is generated from coal-fired power stations, according to the NEA.
