Receiving a wedding invitation should be exciting, not dreadful. But if it’s not the first one this season, or if you’re keeping a wary eye on your budget, getting that embossed white card in the mail could bring mixed emotions — and the search for a tactful way to decline. One-third of Americans have skipped or considered skipping a wedding because they couldn’t afford to attend, according to a recent survey from NerdWallet, conducted online by The Harris Poll. Their reluctance to attend is understandable, considering that the average reported budget for a close friend’s wedding gift was 8, according to the survey. “Many wedding guests look at a friend’s bridal registry and start doing the math,” says Courtney Jespersen, NerdWallet consumer saving expert. “But thankfully, the 0 coffee maker and 0 vacuum aren’t your only gift options.”Here are several budget-friendly wedding gifts that cost far less, or even nothing at all.Go in on a gift with a group. Other guests may be in the same boat, and if the wedding registry has gifts at various price points, there’s an opportunity for you to pool your gift budgets and choose something the couple really have their eyes on. Check with friends you know are on the guest list and choose an amount to spend that fits everyone’s budgets.Shop off-registry. You don’t have to stick to the wish list the couple put together, particularly if there’s nothing on there within your budget. “It’s perfectly fine for a guest to go off-registry,” says Diane Gottsman, national etiquette expert and founder of The Protocol School of Texas. “A registry is a useful guide that makes sure the bride and groom get what they need. However, a guest can also feel free to write a check or purchase something else they know the bride and groom will enjoy.”? MORE: 3 tips for the ideal wedding guestGive an experience. If the happy couple are millennials, there’s a good chance they’d love an experience more than a material gift anyway. Offer to plan and prepare a romantic picnic or help them build a garden in their backyard, Gottsman suggests.Contribute to a larger cause. If it’s good enough for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, this may work for your friends, too. More than 4 in 10 (43%) millennials say they’d prefer to donate to charity in a couple’s name than buy them a registry gift, according to the NerdWallet survey. This is an appropriate gift if the couple has requested charitable contributions in their name or if you know they feel strongly about a certain cause or organization. Most charities don’t have a donation minimum, so you can spend as much or as little as you want.Help fund a honeymoon (or home). Honeymoon and even down payment funds are increasingly popular choices for couples with pending nuptials. If your friends have set up such a registry, it’s a good option for guests with fixed budgets. ? MORE: How to cut wedding guest costsGet creative. Personalized gifts often mean the most. If you’re artistic, write the couple a meaningful poem or paint them a picture. You could also pay for someone else’s creativity — getting a relatively inexpensive photo frame personalized with the wedding date or couple’s last name, for example, makes a unique gift that may come in well under the average gift budget. “A gift doesn’t have to be expensive to be significant,” Gottsman says. “The most important thing is to let the bride and groom know you’re happy for them and wishing them a lifetime of happy memories.”More From NerdWallet 3626

RANCHO SANTA FE (KGTV): As the costs to grow avocado and citrus keep rising, farmers in San Diego are trying a new crop to put a jolt in their business: coffee."We’re excited about the possibilities," says Chuck Badger, who runs R.E. Badger and Sons. He's planted about 5,000 coffee plants across several farms that his business manages."The plants are very happy. They’ve got a lot of cherries on them. So we’re super excited for this summer to pick it."Badger says he heard about the possibilities of coffee from growers in Ventura County. San Diego's coastal climate and soil are similar to other coffee producing regions. The timing couldn't be better. In addition to dealing with the lingering drought, many farmers are getting frustrated with the rising production costs of avocado and citrus trees. They're looking for ways to diversify their crops.Badger says the upfront costs of coffee are a little higher, but the profit margins can be much better. He told 10News that coffee needs about 900 trees planted per acre, while citrus uses only 150.But, if the coffee grades out as a "premium" brand, farmers could net as much as ,000 per acre. Citrus and avocado trees bring in anywhere from ,000 to ,000 an acre, depending on the yield and other market factors.Leaders with the San Diego County Farm Bureau are excited about the potential as well, but caution that coffee is still in an "experimental" phase in the area."Nobody's all in at this point," says Executive Director Eric Larson. He points out that San Diego has around 50,000 acres of total farmland. Larson guesses that coffee makes up less than 20 total acres right now."Folks are seeing if it’s going to work here before they make a future decision to be all in," says LarsonHe says it could be a good crop to plant in conjunction with other established crops, doubling up acreage to increase profits.Badger thinks San Diego could become coffee country, in the same way Napa is known for wine."We want to model it after the whole wine growing template, where people are asking for certain varietals, certain regions, organic," he says. "So those coffee snobs become like those wine snobs and will pay for premium coffee."Badger won't be able to harvest any of his beans until next summer. He's looking forward to seeing how it all plays out."If you look at what the world wants and what people are spending money on, I think it will be a good thing." 2447

Record high ocean temperatures are bringing large crowds to San Diego beaches. The warm water also has the potential to attract more stingrays and jellyfish to the area. The Scripps Institute of Oceanography reports that surface ocean temperatures reached a record 79.5 degrees Sunday, which is more than ten degrees above normal. That, combined with unseasonably hot and humid weather, brought 333,680 people to City of San Diego beaches over the weekend, city lifeguards estimate. Clarissa Anderson, executive director of the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, said it's unclear what has led to the higher temperatures. "The last several years we really have seen these anomalous temperatures every summer," she said, adding that the hot and humid water could be playing a role. The warm waters could also attract more stingrays to plant themselves along the shallow sand and jelly fish in the water just off shore. People who don't shuffle their feet risk a sting from the ray, while jelly fish sting on contact."More people are going to the beach, warmer temperatures, nice water and so you've just got more people and more animals, higher probability of encounter," Anderson said. Anderson said it was unclear how long these high temperatures would last. She noted the county had record low ocean temperatures - based on date of year - just a few weeks ago. 1422

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University released a video on Tuesday that shows how droplets disperse into the air from a person’s mouth. The researchers used different kinds of masks to analyze the disbursement of the droplets. The researchers also showed that without a mask, six feet of distance might not be enough to avoid infection. The FAU team tested a single-layer bandana-style covering, a homemade mask that was stitched using two-layers of cotton quilting fabric consisting of 70 threads per inch, and a non-sterile cone-style mask that is available in most pharmacies. The team used a mannequin, Laser lights and synthetic fog to help visualize the spread of the droplet from a cough..The researchers said that stitched quilted cotton masks worked the best in the simulation, with droplets from emulated coughs traveling just 2.5 inches from the mask. By comparison, without a mask, the droplets moved more than 8 feet, with some droplets traveling up to 12 feet during a heavy cough. The researchers also noted that the droplets remained suspended in midair for up to three minutes in the simulated environment.“We found that although the unobstructed turbulent jets were observed to travel up to 12 feet, a large majority of the ejected droplets fell to the ground by this point,” said Dhanak. “Importantly, both the number and concentration of the droplets will decrease with increasing distance, which is the fundamental rationale behind social-distancing.”FAU said that droplets from a cough traveled 3 feet, 7 inches from a bandana; 1 foot, 3 inches from a folded handkerchief; and 8 inches from a cone-style mask.“Preliminary results from our experiment reveal that significant concentrations of small particles from a turbulent jet such as from a heavy cough/sneeze can linger in still air for more than one minute. It only took the particles a couple of seconds to travel 3 feet; in about 12 seconds it reached 6 feet and in about 41 seconds it reached around 9 feet,” said Siddhartha Verma, an assistant professor in FAU’s Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering.Last week, the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projected that 33,000 American lives would be saved between now and October 1 by near universal wearing of masks.Last month, a study in the Lancet found that the use of masks and respirators by those infected with the virus reduced the risk of spreading the infection by 85%. The authors analyzed data that showed that N95 respirators in healthcare settings were up to 96% effective. Other masks were found to be 77% effective. The CDC issued guidance in April to recommend mask wearing while in public, which has become a requirement to enter retail establishments in more than a dozen states. The CDC's guidance stressed several points: That wearing a face covering is not a substitute for social distancing, and that the public should not use medical or surgical masks. The recommendations suggest the public should use fabric or cloth that covers the mouth and nose.To view FAU's video, click here. Justin Boggs is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. President Donald Trump thanked multiple members of Congress involved in passing the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act at a signing ceremony at Fort Drum, New York, Monday, with one major exception: the senator for whom the bill is named."We would not be here for today's signing ceremony without the dedicated efforts without the dedicated members of Congress who worked so hard to pass the National Defense Authorization Act," Trump said, namechecking Republican members of Congress including Rep. Elise Stefanik, who spoke briefly and represents the district containing Fort Drum, as well as Don Baker, Dan Donovan, Joe Wilson and Martha McSally.Trump, who did not serve in the military himself, has previously attacked?McCain's record of service, saying the Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war is "not a war hero" because he was captured."He is not a war hero," Trump told pollster Frank Luntz, who was hosting a July 2015 question-and-answer session at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa."He is a war hero," Luntz interjected."He is a war hero because he was captured?" Trump said, cutting him off. "I like people that weren't captured, OK? I hate to tell you. He is a war hero because he was captured. OK, you can have -- I believe perhaps he is a war hero."Trump has since acknowledged that McCain is a hero, but?refused to apologize in subsequent interviews.McCain has been one of the administration's most outspoken Republican critics. The President hasn't backed down on his attacks on McCain, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a rare brain cancer, over a year ago. Trump has referenced McCain several times on the campaign trail over the past months without directly naming him, hitting the Arizona senator for his health care vote.Just hours after the signing ceremony, Trump continued the criticism at a campaign event for Rep. Claudia Tenney in Utica, New York."One of our wonderful senators said 'thumbs down' at two o'clock in the morning," he said.Although Trump claimed the Senate was one vote away, in reality, the vote was only to go to conference with the House on the Senate's "skinny repeal."McCain's daughter, conservative commentator Meghan McCain, called Trump's comments "gross and pathetic."John McCain, who is the Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, spearheaded efforts to pass the defense spending bill in the Senate."I am particularly humbled that my colleagues chose to designate legislation of such importance in my name. Serving on the Senate Armed Services Committee has been an incredibly meaningful experience since my first days on Capitol Hill," McCain said in a press release when the bill was passed earlier this month. The bill's formal name is the "John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019," and it is listed on the White House daily guidance as such, but Trump simply called it the "National Defense Authorization Act" at Fort Drum.In mostly scripted remarks Monday, Trump called the measure "the most significant investment in our military in our war fighters in modern history," saying he was "very proud to be a big, big part of it."He also touted the 6 billion in forthcoming 2019 fiscal year military funding, his administration's economic success, and the United States' "leadership in space." 3346
