SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Construction crews will close the northbound Interstate 5 off-ramp at Balboa Avenue Friday for a full weekend of work to make improvements to the off-ramp and its intersection with Balboa Avenue, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.The closure will take place from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, during which time construction crews will widen the off-ramp from one lane to two and add a traffic signal at the affected intersection. The signal will go into permanent operation on Monday when the ramp re-opens to vehicle traffic. The improvements will make it easier for motorists to access the future Balboa Avenue trolley station once it opens.The closure will necessitate lane reductions on Balboa and Garnet avenues between Mission Bay Drive and Moraga Avenue, according to SANDAG. Only one lane in each direction will be open to vehicle traffic throughout the weekend, although the schedule is subject to change.The weekend work is part of the .17 billion Mid-Coast Trolley Blue Line Extension, which includes a planned 11-mile extension of trolley service by MTS from Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego to University City. The extension will add trolley stops in Mission Bay Park, UC San Diego and Westfield UTC. SANDAG is receiving .04 billion in funding from the Federal Transit Administration to complete the project.The extension and related projects are intended to reduce traffic congestion as the county's population increases. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of 40 women against Pornhub's parent company for hosting videos produced by former San Diego-based website GirlsDoPorn.com, the owners and operators of which are facing federal sex trafficking charges.The plaintiffs, identified as Jane Does 1 through 40 in the lawsuit filed Tuesday in San Diego federal court, allege Montreal-based MindGeek owns and operates a multitude of pornographic sites that have hosted videos featuring the women, and maintained its business relationship with GirlsDoPorn even as the site came under scrutiny for allegations of videos made through coercion and fraud.The suit alleges MindGeek's business partnership with GirlsDoPorn continued through late 2019 and only ended because GirlsDoPorn ceased to exist amid a Department of Justice sex trafficking investigation and a civil lawsuit filed in San Diego Superior Court.The federal suit alleges that after the partnership ended, MindGeek's sites continued hosting victims' videos, including as recently as Dec. 12."MindGeek knew it was partnering with and profiting from a sex trafficking venture for years," the latest suit alleges. "MindGeek also knew of the significant harassment and trauma GirlsDoPorn's victims were enduring by its continued publication of the victims' videos. MindGeek simply did not care and continued to partner with GirlsDoPorn until it was no longer profitable because of the indictments and arrests."MindGeek did not respond for comment regarding the lawsuit.The company and its most popular site, Pornhub, were featured in a New York Times article this month alleging Pornhub hosts videos featuring rape and child abuse. In the article's wake, several major credit card companies -- including Visa, Mastercard and Discover -- cut ties with the website and Pornhub instituted a ban on videos uploaded by unverified users and removed millions of videos from the website this week.In the Superior Court case originally filed in 2016, GirlsDoPorn's owners were sued by 22 women who alleged they were coerced to film pornographic videos or led to believe their videos would only be distributed to private owners, rather than proliferated online on GirlsDoPorn's subscription website, as well as numerous free sites, many of which are owned by MindGeek.Several of the women alleged they were lured to San Diego with online advertisements that made no mention of nudity or pornography, much less the GirlsDoPorn business name.The women were awarded nearly million earlier this year by San Diego Superior Court Judge Kevin Enright, who ruled the defendants pressured the women to sign documents replete with "broad, vague releases couched in disorganized, complicated legalese," which obscured the victims' concerns over potential online dissemination. Other women hired as "reference models" allegedly spoke to uneasy victims over the phone and claimed they had been featured in prior videos without issue, falsely assuring victims that their videos would not end up on the internet.Once the women discovered their videos were posted online, the website owners ignored requests to take the videos down and cut contact with the women altogether, Enright ruled. The women also alleged GirlsDoPorn's owners shared links to their videos with people within the victims' social circles in order to drive up website traffic.Late last year, prior to Enright's ruling in the civil suit, federal prosecutors filed sex trafficking charges against the site's owners and operators, alleging many of the same claims presented in the civil case. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con accused of abducting and sexually assaulting a woman in two separate locations before letting her out of his truck in Logan Heights pleaded not guilty today to felony charges, including rape and sexual penetration by force.Phillip Terrel McLeod, 47, who has a criminal record that includes a similar kidnapping case from 2002, faces 160 years to life in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Patrick Espinoza, McLeod was ordered held on million bail.The prosecutor said the 27-year-old alleged victim in the current case was initially attacked on Delta Street near Balboa Elementary School about 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 20.Espinoza alleged that McLeod pulled up and threatened to use a Taser on the woman, then forced her into his white pickup truck and drove her to an area near 39th Street and Broadway in Mount Hope, where she was sexually assaulted.The prosecutor said the victim fought back and McLeod drove her to Logan Heights, where he allegedly tried to rape her again. The victim pleaded with McLeod to let her go, and he did so near 32nd Street and National Avenue, Espinoza said.McLeod -- who is also charged with kidnapping for rape, attempted rape, assault with intent to commit rape, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and a misdemeanor count of resisting an officer -- was arrested Dec. 29.He will be back in court Jan. 15 for a readiness conference and the following day for a preliminary hearing. 1481

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man whose altercation with four off-duty San Diego police officers in the parking lot of a Grantville bar drew attention from local activists alleging excessive force was sentenced Thursday to a three year probation term in connection with cocaine and firearm possession, which includes 90 days in jail and nine months to be served in a work furlough program.Jonathan Felix, 29, pleaded guilty last month to possession of a loaded firearm and cocaine, in connection with the Nov. 7, 2018, altercation outside McGregor's Grill and Ale House just before 2 a.m.The case generated substantial public interest regarding the use of police force rather than for the felony case, in which Felix was accused but never charged with pointing the gun at the officers, prompting them to tackle him to the ground and strike him several times until they were able to seize the pistol, according to prosecutors.RELATED: San Diego man says off-duty SDPD officers assaulted himThe blows rendered Felix unconscious, and left him with a fractured pelvis, fractured hand and cuts and bruising to his head, while one of the officers testified that he broke his hand punching the defendant.In addition to possessing cocaine, Felix was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to theft and drug-related convictions out of Arizona, according to Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon.Following his 90 days in custody, Felix will continue working during the day at Greystone Prime Steakhouse & Seafood in the Gaslamp Quarter, where he was employed at the time of his arrest. San Diego Superior Court Judge Polly H. Shamoon imposed a suspended four-year prison sentence, meaning Felix could head to prison if he violates the terms of his probation.At a preliminary hearing in February, Officer Anthony Duncan testified that after he and other officers departed McGregor's, they noticed Felix leaving the premises and returning to the parking lot on several separate occasions, both in his Dodge Durango and on a bicycle. He said the officers were concerned that Felix was "casing" vehicles, possibly to break into or steal cars.Felix was exhibiting "odd behavior" and "something didn't feel right (about him)," Duncan said.Officer Jose Rodriguez, who was at the bar with the other men but left before the altercation with Felix, testified that he also felt Felix was looking into vehicles parked in the lot.Despite their concerns, none of the officers called for assistance from on-duty law enforcement until after they restrained Felix, according to Duncan.Duncan said that he approached Felix, at which point the defendant produced a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and pointed it at him, prompting all four officers to draw firearms on Felix.Surveillance footage from the parking lot of the business captured the physical altercation between the men, but not the purported standoff, which was blocked from view by a parked car. The defendant, who was sitting on his bicycle at the time, backpedaled away from the men, who followed and tackled him to the ground, according to surveillance footage.Felix told investigators after being arrested that he believed the group of men, who he said never identified themselves as law enforcement officers that night, may have been casing his Durango or looking to start trouble.Defense attorney Alicia Freeze argued that her client drew his gun out of concern for his safety, but denied that he ever pointed the weapon at the group. Speaking with reporters outside court following the sentencing hearing, she said she felt the officers used "unlawful force" in subduing Felix.Runyon reiterated outside court that Felix pointed a gun at the officers, "ignored several commands" to drop his gun, and "did not give up the gun immediately" even after being taken to the ground.Along with Duncan, the altercation included fellow San Diego officers Nicholas Dabbaghian, Frank Bigler and Ross Bainbridge. 3956

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A parolee who allegedly stabbed a pair of transients -- one fatally -- in two separate Midway District attacks on Thanksgiving Day was charged Friday with murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Forrest Robert Brantley, 38, of Ventura County, is accused of fatally stabbing 55-year-old Robert Erbe in the neck at about 8 a.m. Nov. 28 outside a business in the 3100 block of Sports Arena Boulevard, according to San Diego police.Brantley is also accused of stabbing another man three times in the back and arm on Sports Arena Boulevard about six hours prior to Erbe's slaying, according to Deputy District Attorney Will Hopkins.The prosecutor said that after stabbing the first victim around 2 a.m., Brantley returned to the area and approached Erbe and an unidentified second transient outside a 7-Eleven store.RELATED: Police identify man in deadly Thanksgiving Day Midway District stabbingHopkins said he offered Erbe drugs in a bag and then stabbed the victim while Erbe was looking through the bag.According to the prosecutor, Erbe asked Brantley why he stabbed him and Brantley responded, ``This is war,'' then stood over the victim and watched him bleed out.In the days following the stabbings, San Diego police circulated photographs of the defendant, which included images captured from surveillance footage on the San Diego trolley.Brantley was arrested in Ventura on Dec. 4 while walking near the intersection of the 101 Freeway and state Route 33, where officers recognized him from fugitive-suspect alerts, according to police in the coastal city north of Los Angeles.According to the prosecutor, Brantley posted on social media days prior to the stabbings that he was going to ``help the homeless,'' though his true intention was to target homeless victims.RELATED: Midway District murder suspect arrested in VenturaWhile the prosecution asked for no bail, San Diego County Superior Court Judge Jay Bloom set bail at million due to the ``totally senseless'' nature of the attacks on ``vulnerable victims,'' as well as the flight risk he believed Brantley represented.
