SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Distance learning is now possible for more than 7,000 San Diego County families who had little or no internet access before the pandemic. The County Office of Education has been working for months to get those students online and have plans to help even more.Before COVID-19 hit, the county estimates one in five families had no internet or were considered “under-connected” by not having a connection strong enough to support distance learning.Isabel Estrada was one of those students.“Sometimes it would cut out during class time and I would miss something or have to email my teachers of why it kept cutting out,” said the freshman at Oceanside High School.The County Office of Education has been working for months to bridge the digital gap. So far, they’ve provided more than 7,000 mobile hotspots to families in need.Once Isabel’s family got a hot spot she says she felt more confident signing on to class.“We’re just really grateful because the internet right now, it’s me and my sister so it helps both of us with school,” said Isabel.At a press conference Thursday, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher announced million from the general fund will be used to help connect another 4,000 families.“That digital divide went from something that we needed to address, to something we had to address when our promise of public education moved virtually,” said Fletcher.The million will be divided among 19 districts identified as having the greatest need. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Home sales in San Diego County accelerated in July after declining on an annual basis for more than a year.New data from real-estate tracker CoreLogic shows 3,988 home sales in July, up 10.1 percent from July 2018. That marks the first time since April 2018 that home sales in the county did not decline on an annual basis, when seasonal factors do not impact the data. Meanwhile, the median price for a home sold in the county remained flat over the year at 0,000. In June, the average rate for a 30-year-fixed mortgage fell to 3.8 percent, according to Freddie Mac. That was the first time the rate was below 4 percent since Dec. 2017. It ticked down even lower in July to 3.77 percent. Mark Goldman, a loan officer with C2 Financial, said the lower rates likely helped people increase their buying power by 2 to 3 percent. "That same house is going to cost a little bit less, and help you afford more," he said. "A lot of times when market gives you something like lower rates, the market takes it back in the form of higher prices, and we’re not really seeing that."Goldman said there is less speculation in the market due to concerns that it has leveled off. Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill that would have required the State Justice Department to verify hunting licenses with Fish and Wildlife before approving a firearm sale to a person under 21.The proposed legislation came after ABC 10News uncovered that suspected Poway Synagogue shooter John Earnest purchased the weapon used in the April 2019 attack with an invalid hunting license that went unchecked. Earnest was only 19 at the time he bought the assault-style weapon from San Diego Guns, when the state's age-limit was 21. The age limit, however, remained 18 for those who possessed a valid, state-issued hunting license. The Justice Department does not verify hunting licenses with Fish and Wildlife, instead leaving it to the gun shop to make the only determination. The governor said creating the verification system would require a 30-month information technology project and could disrupt other firearm technology systems in development under seven other bills. "I am concerned that adding an information technology project will impede DOJ's ability to perform the work it has already been tasked," Newsom said in a veto statement. In an interview Wednesday, State Sen. Anthony Portantino expressed shock and disappointment that Newsom vetoed the legislation. "It's a loophole that needs to be closed," he said. "You can't have a system that relies on the validity of a license not being checked to make sure that that license is actually valid. The whole goal is to keep guns out of the wrong hands. This shooter in Poway got a gun based on a faulty license."Portantino vowed to continue pushing for the change, either through the governor's budget in January or a new bill next year. When making the purchase, Earnest presented a state hunting license that was not valid until July 1, 2019, two months after the alleged attack. That technicality meant the sale should have been rejected, Portantino said. It was Portantino's law that raised California's purchase age limit to 21 but created the hunting-license exemption for those 18 and older. Portantino's bill, Senate Bill 914, would have required the Justice Department to verify hunting licenses with Fish and Wildlife before approving a firearm sale to someone under 21. The bill passed both houses of the state Legislature before failing on the governor's desk.Still, legislators and Newsom did act in the aftermath of the shooting, by eliminating the hunting-license exemption for semi-automatic, center fire weapons. It still exists, however, for other guns, including bolt-action rifles and semi-automatic rimfire weapons. Israel Dahan, whose daughter Noya was injured by shrapnel during the attack, declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation related to the shooting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Early data suggests the coronavirus vaccine candidates from both Pfizer and Moderna are safe and effective, but some patients may experience side effects that can feel intense but resolve quickly.More than 37,000 people have taken either the Pfizer or the Moderna vaccine in a Phase 3 trial. Both vaccines require two doses, and side effects were more common after the second dose.Pfizer reported 3.8% of the recipients felt fatigue and 2% experienced headache, based on preliminary data from its Phase 3 trial. These symptoms are classified as Grade 3 or “severe” adverse events because they can interfere with daily activity.Moderna reported more Grade 3 side effects. There was fatigue in 9.7% of recipients, muscle pain in 8.9%, joint pain in 5.2%, headache in 4.5%, pain in 4.1%, and redness at the injection site in 2%.Neither company reported side effects that affected less than 2% of participants in their press releases but more detailed data will be released.Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco, said the symptoms typically appear in the first few hours after vaccination and resolve within 24 to 36 hours.“The most troublesome of them for people has been low grade temperatures, but they go away in many cases without even using anti-inflammatories” like ibuprofen, he said.Experts say the vaccines appear to have a higher rate of Grade 3 side effects than the typical flu vaccine, even high-dose flu vaccines, but they say there’s no reason to worry about so-called reactogenic symptoms like muscle and joint pain.“Usually if it hurts that's a positive sign. But the increased rates are still extremely rare: an extra 1 to 2 cases for every million doses, according to the CDC.Dr. Ramers said the long-term consequences of contracting COVID-19 are much more concerning.“This is not a virus that you want to get,” he said. “There are unpredictable effects. There are healthy young people developing clots and strokes.”A study on COVID-19 patients in Michigan found that two months after hospitalization, 32.5% had a lingering cough or difficulty breathing and 11% reported new or worsening trouble caring for themselves.Both the FDA and the CDC are taking extra steps to monitor people who get the vaccine early for any side effects.
