Bruises, loss of vision or the loss of an eye – injuries during protests have drawn more attention to what police call "non-lethal" tools.An expert tells us there are certain categories: Chemical weapons like tear gas, electric devices like Tasers, impact weapons like batons, and kinetic impact munitions, meaning any fire projectiles, including bean bag rounds.“You tend to see grenade launchers being used in crowd control, more than anything else,” said Charlie Mesloh, a professor of criminal justice at Northern Michigan University. “Also, you're going to see shotguns only because they're plentiful and they're, you know, they're accurate.”Mesloh is also a former officer who has conducted research on these weapons. He says what many people have started calling “rubber bullets” are actually skip-fired munitions. Those are the most concerning to him because they're less predictable.Skip-fired munitions are typically shot out of a grenade launcher with a few rounds inside. They're meant to be bounced off the ground to cut down on some of the sting.Mesloh says that after looking at pictures of injuries, he thinks some are being fired directly at people.“There are some problems and with how these are being used, some of them might be training,” said Mesloh. “Some of them also could be more environmental. They're like, they're wearing a gas mask and they can't see.”Mesloh says there's no reason police should ever be shooting someone in the head, unless they're trying to kill them. 1506

Brookstone filed for bankruptcy and will close its remaining 101 mall stores.The mall and airport seller, best known for massage chairs, quirky gadgets, and travel luggage, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in federal court on Thursday. It was Brookstone's second bankruptcy filing in four years.The company will keep its 35 airport stores and website open and running while it attempts to find a buyer. It has secured a million loan to finance operations during the sale.Brookstone's CEO said in a statement that its airport and online businesses were successful, but an "extremely challenging retail environment at malls" forced the company to close its stores there.Unabated traffic losses at malls have plagued brick-and-mortar sellers. Mall vacancies reached a six-year high last quarter as a wave of stores closed, including Walgreens, Bon-Ton, Sears and Kmart, Best Buy, Kay and Jared, Matress Firm, and GNC."They're trapped in hundreds of these B and C malls, whose traffic has been in serial decline," said Mark Cohen, the director of retail studies at Columbia Business School. "Where they are in triple-A malls, they're faced with very high rent."In 2014, Brookstone filed for bankruptcy and was sold to a Chinese consortium for 6 million. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — At least two protesters were struck by a vehicle Monday during a demonstration against racism in Bloomington.The incident happened around 9 p.m. Monday in the area of 6th and Walnut in Bloomington near the Monroe County Courthouse as the protest was wrapping up.Hundreds of people had been taking part in a rally and protest march through Bloomington in response to an alleged racist attack at nearby Lake Monroe over the weekend. In that incident, which was caught on video, several men attack and allegedly threatened to lynch Vauhxx Booker, a Monroe County Human Rights commissioner.Geoff Stewart was one of the two people struck by the vehicle during Monday's protest."A woman driving the vehicle came up to the stop and had started revving her engine toward us, and we tried to stop her and let her know that the crowd is clearing up," Stewart said. "But, she and her passenger both wanted to go right away, so they started to push. They pushed into the woman that was with me and when she pushed again both of us went on the vehicle."Stewart said when the driver started to accelerate, the woman he was with ended up on the hood of the vehicle, and he ended up hanging off the driver's side of the vehicle."I was just trying to block her vision so she would slow down, so I tried to pull myself as far in her way to obstruct her view," Stewart said. "She drove through red lights and made her turn up here that threw both of us off the car."One protester was transported to the hospital with injuries, and another was checked at the scene. BEND, Ore. -- It’s a crisp September morning. A good time to go for a hike. For 21-year-old Isaac Shannon, that means strapping into the AdvenChair.“I’m in a wheelchair because I have a mitochondrial disease, which is a progressive genetic disorder that affects pretty much everything in my body and makes me extremely tired and fatigued easily,” Shannon said.For the majority of his life, Shannon hasn’t been able to go on hikes. This is now his fourth time using the AdvenChair.“It’s rejuvenating to be outside, especially as a person with a disability because these resources are not exactly the most accessible,” Shannon said. “So when there is a tool that allows a person to be able to experience life in the most average way possible, I think it’s healing, and it’s nice to be out in nature where you’re not around people.”The AdvenChair is an adaptive, human-powered wheelchair designed to help people with physical disabilities get outside. Jack Arnold is the engineer who helped develop the chair.“It’s an all-terrain wheelchair. With a small team of people, you can go backpacking,” Arnold said.One person pushes from behind, and another – adequately referred to as a mule -- pulls from the front. Up to five people can help remove the chair with nylon straps and carabiners on more challenging trails.“There are so many people with physical challenges out there in the world,” Arnold said. “We take it for granted; we can get up and go for a hike. And everybody with physical challenges, they don’t want to be stuck indoors either. They want to get out.”The man who inspired and created the idea of the AdvenChair, Geoff Babb, was supposed to be on the trail with us, but a medical emergency rushed him to the hospital instead. Geoff is no stranger to the hospital. This visit is due to a complication with a pump in his abdomen that helps control muscle spasms. But as he puts it, it’s not his first rodeo.“I had my first stroke on November 10th, 2005,” Geoff said.Twelve years later, on the same date, Geoff had a second stroke. Now he lives with quadriparesis, which means he experiences weakness in all four limbs. His favorite medicine is nature.“For me, to start to heal, I had to be in my place of comfort and strength, which was being outside,” Geoff said.Outside is where he met his wife, Yvonne.“I mean, we weren’t born outside, but we’re just outdoorsy people,” Yvonne said with a laugh.Both worked as plant resource specialists. Geoff used to be a fire incident commander. As his primary caretaker, Yvonne’s life has been influenced by the AdvenChair as much as Geoff’s has.“To me, it’s a safe way to go out to the woods with Jeff and continue our life in an adventurous way,” Yvonne said.They can go on trips to the beach, or in the snow and trek through somewhat tricky trails.“Takes five or six people we’re like ‘ohhh we can do this,’” Yvonne said.Yvonne says Geoff is the most driven person she’s ever known. Geoff says his motivation is his desire to contribute to the world positively.“I have a purpose when I get up, and that purpose is to help people experience wild places eventually,” Geoff said.It’s a goal he’s already achieved on a small scale with other friends in Oregon.“I think this is one of the coolest things that I’ve gotten to experience in my life because I’ve been able to hike again without feeling tired or having any pain,” Shannon said.Geoff hopes to continue his legacy allowing more people to hike outside.“I want to be able to see other people in his chair… on the Camino, or climbing the Great Wall of China,” Yvonne said.No matter what life throws at him, Geoff says he will continue rolling boldly off the beaten path. 3684
