SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Every prom is memorable, but only one is truly an "Unforgettable Prom." Yet just like so many momentous occasions this year, the Unforgettable Prom had to be canceled. But its legacy lives on, touching lives 20 years later."Scott was an amazing young man. Sorry. He was very charismatic," says Carmen Delgadillo.Twenty years and Carmen Delgadillo still gets choked up talking about her son Scott. At 13, Scott Delgadillo was diagnosed with leukemia. He was determined to beat cancer because he was driven to one day attend Notre Dame, he was a fighter, and was surrounded by loyal friends who would always visit him in the hospital."Scott had a lot of friends that would come to visit, and some of the other kids did not. So, he would ask his friends, 'Hey, can you stop by and see my friend?' That's how Scott was; he brought people together," adds Carmen. Those same friends planned to take Scott to the Winter Formal that year. Unfortunately, Scott's sickness got worse, and he passed away shortly after. But his legacy was just beginning."Shortly after his passing, a nurse at Rady Children's Hospital, a nurse that took care of him, stopped me and asked if we would be interested in putting together a prom for the teenagers at Rady's Hospital," says Carmen. So, Carmen and Scott's friends got together and created the Friends of Scott Foundation. Teenagers with cancer and other illnesses, many too sick to attend their own proms, get the red-carpet treatment here at the Unforgettable Prom. Everything from the limos to the boys' tuxes, to the girls' gowns, and everything in between is taken care of for them."This is a way that they just forget about everything, and it's a free night from cancer. And we're very, very proud of this event," adds Carmen. But like most proms this year, the Unforgettable Prom had to be canceled. Instead, Carmen and the foundation are working to gather donations to create care packages for those teenagers suffering from illnesses and their families."We are providing gift cards, whether it be groceries or gas to help some of these families out during the pandemic," says a smiling Carmen. Now, 20 years later, Carmen Delgadillo and her volunteers have impacted and touched thousands of lives in the memory of her son Scott."I'd like to say how many lives have touched me," says Carmen. "Some of these kids are now parents. I've got to meet their children. They've gone on with their lives, some of these kids have gone on to college. So, all those lives that have been part of Scott and his legacy." 2566

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite having the most coronavirus cases of any local university, large off-campus parties continue to be an issue for San Diego State University and nearby residents.Students living off-campus have been attending large parties, according to neighbors. As of Saturday, SDSU had 1,184 COVID-19 cases, 767 of those cases being reported in off-campus students.Locals living in the College Area says many students continue to ignore public health orders and hold large, loud parties with no physical distancing or mask wearing."It's really frustrating and at this point, I feel like there's not a lot that we can do because you know those people, they're just going to keep doing what they're doing," one neighbor said.In a statement to ABC 10News' reporting partner KPBS, San Diego State says more than a hundred notices of violations have been delivered to residences in the college area. The university also contracts elite security to keep an eye on the neighborhood surrounding the school for any violations. If a security guard notices a party, they call police to respond. As of Friday, Cal State San Marcos had reported 18 total COVID-19 cases, three of which were off-campus. At UC San Diego, there have been 106 coronavirus cases since March 1, with three being reported since Oct. 1. Since Aug. 16, the University of San Diego has reported 130 confirmed and 17 probable cases, with 127 COVID-19 cases being non-residential students. 1465

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For over a decade, SDSU associate professor of chemistry Gregory Holland has been researching spiders and particularly black widow’s silk. They’ve come to the realization, through their research, that the properties of black widow silk are stronger than steel and tougher than the Kevlar in bulletproof vests.Gregory Holland, SDSU associate professor of analytical chemistry and Northwestern chemistry professor Nathan Gianneschi said their collaboration shows the organization of the molecules involved in silk production is more complex than previously thought. There are companies that use synthetic spider silk but its the specific black widow spider silk that has the top tier benefits.“The synthetic spider silk its not a bad material, its just not as good as the real thing," Holland said.Holland says the company that creates synthetic silk actually has partnerships with Adidas and Patagonia. "The most important thing is a spider does it low energy, environmentally friendly. It’s just protein water and salt”.Once they reach the point where they’re able to identically replicate the silk of a black widow spider, the artificial version could be used in building materials for bridges or environmentally friendly replacements for plastic.Black widows (Latrodectus hesperus) spin a lightweight thread much stronger than that of other spider species, with draglines that can stretch an extra 25 percent of their length before snapping. The composition of the spun silk fibers was previously identified, but the structure of the proteins involved in producing them has been more of a mystery, now one step closer. 1650

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — During California's stay at home order, city leaders say they will not be enforcing most parking citations.Parking enforcement in the City of San Diego was placed on a holiday or Sunday schedule, unless otherwise stated on the meter. The city will still be enforcing red, white, blue and time enforcement areas due to public safety concerns.RELATED: San Diego beach parking lots closed to discourage crowds during COVID-19 order"Just make sure you read the time limit signs or the signs on the meter. If the sign says 'Except Sundays and Holidays' (which I believe most do say that) then you do not need to pay. If the sign on the meter says 'Everyday' then you do need to pay," said Anna Hill, with the city, said.No timeline was placed on the parking enforcement changes.More information on the city's parking enforcement can be found online. While the current parking rules may entice residents to go outside, city leaders are urging locals to remain inside except for essential trips during the coronavirus stay at home order.RELATED COVERAGE:What's the difference?
