BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday met with Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Michael Thomas Somare.In their meeting at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing, Hu said bilateral relations have made significant progress since both countries forged diplomatic ties in 1976, citing frequent high-level visits, deep political trust and fruitful cooperation in all fields.     Hu appreciated Papua New Guinea's unswerving adherence to the one-China policy and support on China's peaceful reunification. He proposed both countries step up mutually-beneficial cooperation in key areas such as trade, agriculture, forestry, fishery, transportation, resources and energy.     Hu said the Chinese government encouraged and supported Chinese businesses to invest and operate in Papua New Guinea.     Somare, who was here for an official visit, said Papua New Guinea cherished its relations with China, which was a sincere and reliable partner.     Somare said his country respected China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and adhered to the one-China policy.     He thanked China for offering generous assistance to his country for many years.     He said his country would like to work more closely with China on trade, energy, resources and construction.     Somare is to visit south China's Hainan Province for the 2009 meeting of the Bo'ao Forum for Asia (BFA) from April 17 to 19.

BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have ordered all-out efforts to combat the severe drought in the country's vast wheat-growing area to ensure a good summer harvest, a State Council meeting was told Thursday. The central government on Thursday decided to earmark another 300 million yuan (44 million U.S. dollars) as drought relief fund in additional to 100 million yuan already allocated. The fund will be used to buy agricultural machinery and other production materials.     Lack of rainfall has led to severe drought in northern China, leaving about 141 million mu (9.3 million hectares) wheat or 43 percent of the country's total affected, according to the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA). The provincial meteorological bureau said the drought is the worst since 1951. The drought has affected 63 percent of the province's 5.26 million hectares of wheat.    About 145 million mu crops have been affected by the drought nationwide, or 40 million mu more than the same period last winter.     Government at all levels should give anti-drought work a priority in an effort to stabilize grain production, increase farmers' income and ensure agricultural production, the State Council said.     Relevant departments in local regions were asked to enhance farmland management, mobilize human resources, ensure technology service and enlarge irrigation areas.     Efforts should also go to build emergency water resources projects and carry out artificial precipitation to alleviate water shortage and ensure drinking water for both people and livestock. The Ministry of Water Resources also said it would enhance supervision and launch emergency plan when necessary.     Relevant departments should allocate special funds to aid poverty-stricken people in rural areas.     The Cabinet said it will send working teams to eight drought-hit provinces to discuss anti-drought procedures. The MOA has already sent 12 working teams of experts to the drought-hit provinces, to instruct farmers on drought relief work.     Plant diseases and pest prevention were discussed and local governments were advised to supervise and prevent the spread of severe animal diseases.     Efforts should also be made to monitor or combat forestry fire, upgrade anti-disaster ability and avoid casualty, the State Council said.

BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- The international press has given extensive coverage to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's government work report at the Second Session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) which started on Thursday, and praised China's persisted target of 8 percent annual economic growth in the face of the world financial crisis.     The French-based AFP reported that despite the turbulence and recession of the world economy, "Wen forecast China can sustain eight percent economic growth in 2009, boosting hopes China's export-driven economy will cope with the crisis."     "Asian markets rallied for a second day after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday reaffirmed his government's growth aims, triggering gains across the region in China-related stocks," it reported.     On Thursday, the benchmark Nikkei-225 climbed 142.53 points to 7,433.49, up 1.95 percent.     The British news agency Reuters said: "Premier Wen Jiabao assured on Thursday that China will achieve 8 percent growth this year despite a deepening financial crisis, setting out export support and spending programs to shore up the economy."     Wen said China's budget deficit this year will reach 950 billion yuan (140 billion dollars), and though he did not announce fresh economic stimulus, his assurances helped extend a rally in Asian markets, Reuters reported.     The U.S.-based Associated Press (AP) said: "China rolled out an aggressive government spending program on Thursday, promising ramped-up outlays for infrastructure and social programs to ward off the global economic downturn and forestall unrest."     The German Press Agency (dpa) said China seeks to bolster the economy against the effects of a global slowdown.     China announced a record annual budget deficit of 950 billion yuan (140 billion dollars), but Wen stressed that the deficit was below 3 percent of China's gross domestic product (GDP), remaining "within the acceptable range of what our overall national strength can bear and is therefore safe," dpa said.     The Financial Times said Premier Wen pointed out that the international environment is becoming more complex and the financial crisis is further deepening. MEXICO CITY, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping left here Wednesday afternoon for Jamaica after wrapping up a three-day official visit to Mexico.     During his visit, Xi held talks with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and met with Senate President Gustavo Enrique Madero Munoz and Cesar Duarte Jaquez, president of the Chamber of Deputies.     Xi exchanged views with them on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern.     At a luncheon hosted by Chinese and Mexican entrepreneurs, Xi said fresh efforts were needed to further promote China-Mexico economic and trade cooperation amidst the current global financial crisis.     Mexico is the first leg of the Chinese vice president's six-nation tour, which will also take him to Jamaica, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil and Malta.     On his way to Mexico, Xi made a transit stop in Nandi, Fiji, where he held talks with Fijian leaders on the cooperative partnership between China and the island country.
