ABU DHABI, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- More than 40 world leading renewable energy companies from China have confirmed their participation in the upcoming World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi, organizers said Sunday.     The Chinese pavilion at the meeting, which is now in its third year and will be held in the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Jan. 18-21, has already grown to more than 1,000 square meters, ASDA'A Burson-Marsteller, a public relations consultancy, said in a press release.     Leading companies and organizations from all across China, including Suntech Power, Yingli Green Energy Holding and China Sunergy, are expected to participate in the summit, the press release said.     It noted that there is a particularly strong presence of companies from China's eastern province of Jiangsu, where solar power is a pillar of the local economy, saying approximately half of the Chinese firms participating are from the province.     According to the press release, Shi Zhengrong, Suntech's chairman and CEO, will take part in a discussion on International Policy and Climate Change Action Plans during the summit.     Suntech, a NYSE-listed company with a market capitalization of nearly 3 billion U.S. dollars, is the world's largest producer of crystalline silicon solar panels and has delivered solar energy products to more than 80 countries over the past eight years, it said.     The China Greentech Report, recently issued by the China Greentech Initiative, a partnership of more than 80 of the world's leading companies and organizations, projects that the Chinese government's investment in its "greentech" industry will drive private sector investment, which could create a national market worth up to 1 trillion dollars annually.     Such significant investment and government commitment have led to China playing a significant role in the exhibition at the WFES this year, the press release said.     The WFES, a global platform for sustainable future energy solutions launched in 2008, gathers industrial leaders, investors, scientists, specialists, policymakers and researchers to discuss challenges of rising energy demand and actions to achieve a cleaner and more sustainable future for the world.     Abu Dhabi, an emerging global hub for renewable energy, is the venue for the annual meeting, held along with the World Future Energy and Environment exhibitions.     In June last year, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) decided to base its headquarters in the UAE capital.

BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Early and heavy snow storms in north China have killed 32 people, destroyed nearly 300,000 hectares of winter crops, and caused nearly 7 billion yuan (about one billion US dollars) of direct economic losses as of 2 p.m. Sunday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     The death toll did not include those who died in snow-caused traffic accidents, the ministry said. Ten died in Hebei Province, 12 died in Henan Province, and others in provinces of Shanxi, Shandong and Shaanxi.     As of 2 p.m. Sunday, more than 9.6 million people were affectedly snow storms, and 166,000 people had been evacuated from their homes or stranded vehicles jammed on the roads.     More than 15,000 buildings collapsed, the ministry said.     Heavy snow storms began to fall on Monday in northern and central Chinese provinces, including Hebei, Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Hubei and Shaanxi, and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.     Beijing also experienced heavy snow, but no deaths have been reported so far.

CAIRO, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here Friday, starting a two-day official visit to Egypt preceding a top-level review of action to build China-Africa cooperation.     Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazef received Wen at the airport.     During his visit, Wen is scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and hold talks with Nazef. He will also meet with Arab League chief Amr Mussa, and deliver a speech at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo.     This is Wen's second official visit to Egypt. The first was in 2006, which marked the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomaticties between China and Egypt. BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- The closing of China's Central Economic Work Conference on Monday, which coincided with the opening of the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, left a message that China was determined to pursue a path of low-carbon development.     The three-day conference, responsible for setting the tone for economic development in 2010, agreed that China would step up efforts to boost low-carbon sectors, as part of the strategy of promoting the transformation of economic development pattern.     "This demonstrates a remarkable change in China's concept of development, and would greatly help upgrade economic growth pattern and adjust economic structure," said Jiang Xinmin, a researcher with the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).     The conference agreed to strictly control the issuing of loans to sectors featuring high energy consumption and high carbon emissions, increase credit support to low-carbon industries, strictly reduce exports of high energy-consuming products and rollout low-carbon economic development pilot plans.     Jiang said the government's policies would surely produce more breakthroughs in low-carbon technologies, thus providing new vigor for growth. "We can simply say that China has set foot on a low-carbon development road."     The Chinese government's major task this year had been to maintain growth through its stimulus programs amid the global economic downturn, said Wang Xiaoguang, a researcher with the China National School of Administration.     "As the economic recovery is gaining momentum, the country should shift its focus to the long-term development plan," Wang said.     The conference has put much emphasis on "green" development as 2010 will be the last year of the country's 11th five year plan (2006-2010), a guideline for economic and social development, which set hard targets for reducing energy intensity and emissions.     Under the plan, China would reduce energy consumption per unit of GDP by 20 percent and major pollutant emissions by 10 percent from the 2005 levels by 2010, and the country is still working for that goal.     China announced ambitious plans in late November to cut its energy intensity per unit of GDP by as much as 45 percent by 2020 compared to the levels in 2005.     "The country would be pressured to make more efforts to achieve these targets. It is a tough task we must fulfill. We need to change our growth pattern and find a way to sustainable development," Wang said.     The great importance the government attached to emissions cutting suggested the low-carbon concept has gradually merged into the country's development plans, said Wang.     However, it took more than government policies and enforcement to reach the goal, said Zhou Dadi, a researcher with the NDRC     "A low-carbon development pattern also needs concerted efforts by the public to change their life styles," Zhou said.
