Sony is banking on the "irresistible cuteness" of its new robot dog to win over consumers.Aibo, the artificial-intelligence-powered hound, wags its tail, chases pink balls and can learn new tricks like giving its owner a high five.Aibo is a rebooted version of a device Sony first launched in the 1990s -- and the Japanese company has made it appealingly un-robotic. Unlike past versions, it has "eyes" (two small screens capable of showing diverse and nuanced expressions), a rounded appearance and a mouth that tilts up in a smile.Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai unveiled the new robotic pup in Tokyo on Wednesday. It will go on sale in Japan in January, priced at ¥198,000 (,740) before taxWatch Sony unveil the robotic dog: With an app that connects it to a store, Aibo appears poised to eventually become a rival to smart speaker devices like Amazon's Alexa and Google Home. For now, the robotic pet is being billed as an affectionate companion -- one that hears and understands words of praise and eventually learns and remembers which actions make owners happy. With the owner's permission, Aibo can constantly upload and update data stored in the cloud, changing its personality over time.Owners can also ask Aibo to take pictures. Wandering into creepy territory, the robotic pet can record everything it experiences and create a database of memories owners can browse through on the app.The gadget is a reminder of Sony's pioneering past in robotics and artificial intelligence. The electronics maker bred the first generation of Aibo -- short for Artificial Intelligence robot -- back in 1999. It hoped the pup would captivate customers and make them excited to interact with artificial intelligence. At first, it was incredibly popular. All 3,000 available units sold out in 20 minutes online. Over the next few years, Sony launched two more Aibo generations, but interest waned as more affordable robots entered the market.Sony eventually neutered Aibo production facilities in 2006, leading to an exodus of robotics and AI expertise. Now, with global tech giants and other big companies charging into artificial intelligence, Sony is getting back in the game. The company has pumped resources into the technology, teaming up with U.S. firm Cogitai and launching a venture capital fund last year focused on investing in AI and robotics startups around the world. The renewed focus on AI and robotics means Sony will be competing with tech giants like Amazon and Google.  2484

Sen. Rand Paul will return to the Senate on Monday after being seriously injured at his home in an alleged attack by his neighbor earlier this month."Kelley and I want to thank everyone once again for your thoughts and prayers for my recovery," he tweeted Monday morning. "While I'm still in a good deal of pain, I will be returning to work in the Senate today, ready to fight for liberty and help move forward with tax cuts in the coming days and weeks."The Kentucky Republican suffered six broken ribs after the November 3 incident with Rene Boucher, his neighbor of 17 years. Boucher pleaded not guilty Thursday to misdemeanor fourth degree assault charges. While initial reports suggested the two men were disputing over lawn issues, the senator tweeted articles last week questioning those explanations. And his senior adviser Doug Stafford said the two men hadn't talked in years prior to the attack. "This was not a 'fight,' it was a blindside, violent attack by a disturbed person," Stafford said in a statement. "Anyone claiming otherwise is simply uninformed or seeking media attention."The Senate is expected to hold two votes Monday evening related to administration nominations. Paul is also considered a critical vote on the tax reform bill, which will be marked up in the Senate finance committee this week.  1338

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The St. Joseph Police Department (SJPD) is investigating after a woman found a bomb on her front porch.Alexis Washington was up late with her newborn daughter and young son when she heard a loud pop and saw a flash of red light. When she came outside to check it out, she found the bomb on her porch."The cop told me then that the propane tank was leaking, there was ammunition on top of it with a paper towel that was lit on fire," Washington said. "A bomb? I just don't understand, like a bomb? You can't fight that. That's why it's just like you've got to go. I got to go."SJPD Cpt. Jeff Wilson said the bomb was definitely homemade. The porch was doused with kerosene."I don't have any words for it because I don't see how you could do that," Washington said.SJPD and the ATF are investigating.Washington is thankful her family got out safely."All I can say is it was God, you know, because it went out," said Washington. "The paper towel went out and that's what saved us." 1019

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Coronavirus cases in Florida surpassed 100,000 on Monday, part of an alarming surge across the U.S. West and South as states reopen for business and many Americans resist wearing masks or keeping their distance. Some public health officials are warning that progress won after months of lockdowns could be slipping. And hospitals in areas seeing an uptick in cases are warning that intensive care beds were filling again, and urging communities to do what it takes to control any new outbreaks. An Associated Press analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University finds that new daily confirmed coronavirus cases across the country are up to more than 26,000 a day, up from about 21,000 a day two weeks ago."It is possible to open up at a judicious pace and coexist with the virus, but it requires millions and millions of people to do the right thing. Right now, we don’t have that," because people have let their guard down, Dr. Marc Boom, CEO and president of Houston Methodist Hospital, told the AP. Over 120,000 deaths in the U.S. have been blamed on the virus. 1107
