SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Green Flash Brewery has been sold to a new investment group, continuing a turbulent start to the year for the San Diego-based brewery.The company announced Monday the finalized sale to the group made up of "individuals with extensive experience" in craft beer and food and beverage industries.In a letter to shareholders published on The Full Pint, CEO Mike Hinkley said the company's lender, Comerica Bank, had "foreclosed on its loans and sold the assets of the company ... to WC IPA LLC."RELATED: National City adopts 'craft beer ordinance' to attract breweriesGreen Flash had reportedly taken on a loan for the development of a Virginia Beach, Va., brewery, which has also closed."As such, the Company no longer owns the Green Flash and Alpine businesses. Comerica Bank is currently conducting a separate process to sell the Virginia Beach brewery," the letter continued.The Virginia brewery closing followed that of Green Flash's Poway barrel-aging facility, Cellar 3, also closing this year. The Green Flash and Alpine Beer Company brands, the latter of which was picked up by Green Flash in 2014, will continue."The Green Flash and Alpine breweries will continue to operate in San Diego and Alpine, respectively," a release by the brewery said.In the letter, Hinkley blamed a "general slowdown" in the craft beer industry and increased competition as causes of the sell-off. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Distance learning is now possible for more than 7,000 San Diego County families who had little or no internet access before the pandemic. The County Office of Education has been working for months to get those students online and have plans to help even more.Before COVID-19 hit, the county estimates one in five families had no internet or were considered “under-connected” by not having a connection strong enough to support distance learning.Isabel Estrada was one of those students.“Sometimes it would cut out during class time and I would miss something or have to email my teachers of why it kept cutting out,” said the freshman at Oceanside High School.The County Office of Education has been working for months to bridge the digital gap. So far, they’ve provided more than 7,000 mobile hotspots to families in need.Once Isabel’s family got a hot spot she says she felt more confident signing on to class.“We’re just really grateful because the internet right now, it’s me and my sister so it helps both of us with school,” said Isabel.At a press conference Thursday, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher announced million from the general fund will be used to help connect another 4,000 families.“That digital divide went from something that we needed to address, to something we had to address when our promise of public education moved virtually,” said Fletcher.The million will be divided among 19 districts identified as having the greatest need. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Demonstrators gathered across the county to demonstrate against police violence ahead of several expected protests during the weekend.Events in Carlsbad and Escondido brought demonstrators to street corners and parks with signs and cries for action, in response to police killings of black men sparked after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Similar events were also planned for Oceanside and San Diego.Friday's gatherings mark about a week of daily protests calling for police reform around the county. This week, some of those reforms materialized in moves by local departments to end the use of the carotid restraint technique. City Council President Georgette Gomez also called for leaders to docket a ballot measure to expand police oversight and create an independent police practices commission this month.This weekend, demonstrations planned for San Diego, Chula Vista, Santee, and Encinitas are expected to continue calls for reform and show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. 1034

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Details are beginning to emerge about the woman who was shot and killed inside a Church’s Chicken in the South Bay Wednesday night. Maribel Merino-Iba?ez, 28, was killed while working her shift at the Otay Mesa West restaurant. “I believe in God and I believe that one day justice will come his way and that won’t bring my daughter back, but I know that there will be justice for her,” said Emma Karla Merino, the victim’s mother. "I just want justice, because nobody can bring my sister back. Her body is gone, but she is here in my heart and she’s never going away,” said Gabriela Merino, the victim’s sister. Someone who knew Merino-Iba?ez told 10News she had worked at the Church’s Chicken for nine years and was a shift manager. A vigil is set to take place at the restaurant Friday at 6 p.m. Another victim was identified as Mario Rojas. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he underwent surgery and is now in stable condition.
