SHANGHAI, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese people at the Shanghai Expo Wednesday took time to remember the devastating earthquake that hit southwest China's Sichuan Province two years ago to the day.Among the event's international community, people from Chile and Haiti also reflected on the earthquake tolls in their own countries.QUAKE-PROOF BUILDINGSIn the Broad Pavilion, a long line of silent visitors waited to enter a 20-square-meter quake-proof house where an 8-magnitude earthquake was being simulated. The strength of the simulation was the same as the tremor that left more than 80,000 people dead or missing in Sichuan.Broad Company, a major air-conditioner maker in China, was trying to reproduce the destructive power with a shaking and thunderous noise that seemed to rock the small house seemed close to destruction."I feel great sympathy for the victims. My grief goes beyond words, and I can only pray that all people live in happiness, peace and health," said a monk from Gemeng Temple, Sichuan. At 2:28 p.m., exactly the time the quake hit two years ago, all the people in the pavilion held a tribute. Commemorative poems were recited, describing the losses of family members, clearly moving many visitors.Li Bin, deputy head of devastated Beichuan County, who was present, recalled, "Two years ago, buried under the debris, I was filled with fear of death and hope for life. Today, standing in the pavilion of a great Expo, all sorts of feelings well up in my mind."Technological solutions to withstand earthquakes were also on display. Two years of research by Broad Company had resulted in a pavilion, which was propped up by light steel pillars above the ground.FROM SICHUAN TO QINGHAIYi Yang, deputy director of the Sichuan Pavilion, rose early Wednesday so that he could arrive before the crowds.Yi and representatives from Sichuan had prepared gifts for visitors to commemorate the quake and show gratitude for the help they had received. With the arrival of visitors, seven girls of the Qiang ethnic minority sang folk songs and showed their needlework skills."The phoenix in our embroidery and the flower mentioned in our song carry the message of good luck and happiness. We want to give them to Expo visitors and all the people who helped us," said performer Yechu Nambar.A member of the Qiang ethnic minority, Yechu Nambar is a native of Maoxian County of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. Her hometown was one of the areas hit hardest by the earthquake.People from all walks of life and resources from around the country were sent to assist the Qiang and save their endangered folk culture."Today we can express our most sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all the people who helped us," she said.Elements featuring the earthquake are noticeable at the Sichuan Pavilion. BEIJING, March 31 -- The appointment of three new academic members to the central bank's monetary policy committee on Monday reflects the increasing inclusiveness of monetary policymaking, but may not have any apparent bearing on the timing of an interest rate hike, analysts said. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) said three Chinese economists - Xia Bin, Li Daokui and Zhou Qiren - will replace Fan Gang, the only academic member of the committee, which advises on major monetary issues."Adding two more academics to the monetary policy committee is a welcome change," said Wang Tao, head of China economic research at UBS Securities. "I hope this helps to increase healthy debate within the committee, and increase the independence of monetary policy.""The appointment of three academic members this time - instead of one - indicates the increasing importance of academic voices in monetary policymaking and the three, with different backgrounds, are expected to complement each other to add to the inclusiveness of the panel," said Sun Lijian, an economist with Fudan University. It would make the country's monetary decision-making more rational, he said.Going by their recent comments on inflation, with Li saying that China could precede the United States in raising the rates and Zhou urging a timely and firm exit from stimulus policies, it is speculated that their appointment may signal chances of an earlier rate hike.Zhou said in a February speech that it was high time that China exited from the stimulus measures. "Given the past experiences, the stimulus through expanding money supply and debt only has a short-term effect," he said in the speech. One of the side effects of the stimulus is rising inflation. "The price of the stimulus policies is mainly the adverse effect of the large-scale release of money on the overall market price situation," he said. "We have seen it on the market."Li said early this month once China's consumer price index (CPI), a major measure of inflation, rises 3 percent, the country is set to increase the rates. China's CPI rose by 2.7 percent year-on-year in February. He also said on Monday that China may suffer from exported inflation from developed economies as their continued relaxed monetary policy would lead to surging raw material prices and large-scale capital flowing into the emerging economies, including China.Meanwhile, China should keep itself alert against possible price rises due to weather changes, such as the recent severe drought in southwestern regions.Xia Bin said on Monday that three factors should be taken into account when deciding on whether to raise the interest rates. It should be considered if real negative deposit interest rates occurred. But if inflationary expectations are not strong, the hike would be inappropriate. Moreover, China should not move ahead of the US since it would bring in speculative capital.China's benchmark one-year deposit rate stands at 2.25 percent.Dong Xian'an, chief macroeconomic analyst of Industrial Securities, said economic fundamentals should be the paramount determinant in interest rate related policymaking and the appointment of a new monetary policymaking panel would not have any substantial bearing on the timing of the possible hike. The month-on-month CPI figure is a crucial factor and as it continues to rise, the hike may come in the second quarter of this year, he said.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Monks across China on Wednesday chanted prayers for the victims of the earthquake that struck northwest China's Qinghai Province in April, exactly 49 days after the deaths, which according to Buddhist belief marks the start of the souls' reincarnation. Major temples of the three main schools of Buddhism in China all held prayer rituals for the about 2,700 victims killed in the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Yushu on April 14, a statement from the Buddhist Association of China (BAC) said. About 1,000 Mahayana Buddhist monks attended the prayer session at Beijing's Guangji Temple led by Chuanyin, the BAC president, while the 11th Panchen Lama, the association's vice president, hosted another prayer session at the Lama Temple, an important Tibetan Buddhist temple in Beijing. In southwestern Yunnan Province, monks of Hinayana Buddhism gathered at the Zongfo Temple to pray. Other important temples in Shanxi, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Lhasa also held prayer rituals at the same time. The monks prayed for the victims' souls and for the survivors to overcome the hardships caused by the disaster. Xuecheng, BAC vice president and secretary general, presided over the prayer ritual at the Gyegu Monastery, the main temple in quake-hit Yushu. About 1,000 monks and local residents attended the prayer ritual at the massive cremation site for hundreds of Tibetan quake victims in Gyegu township. Many local residents arrived at the cremation site early in the morning, praying for the dead while turning prayer wheels. Some kowtowed in memory of the dead. "So many eminent monks and living Buddhas attended the prayer ritual and I believe my love is sure to enter the paradise," said Benma, who lost her husband in the quake. "Many good-hearted people have given us support and the monks have been praying day and night," she said. Xuecheng presented to local monks the 2.3 million yuan (338,000 U.S. dollars) raised by the BAC on April 16. According to the State Administration for Religious Affairs, religious circles had donated about 94.52 million yuan (13.72 million dollars) as of Tuesday, of which 70.45 million yuan came from Buddhists.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Edmund Mulet, head of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), on Saturday extended his gratitude to the Chinese peacekeepers and riot police in the quake-ravaged country."I am here to show my respect to the Chinese riot police team and our sincere gratitude for your outstanding performance on behalf of the United Nations," said Mulet during an inspection tour of their campsite. He noted the United Nations was satisfied with the high efficiency of the eighth contingent of Chinese riot police, which was sent to Haiti for the second time. Though there have been several rotations, their dedication and commitment to the peacekeeping mission remain unchanged. When they lost eight members in the 7.3-magnitude earthquake, the Chinese squad did everything they can to tackle the challenges and support MINUSTAH's operation. They had won wide acclaim by the local people, he said."I feel gratified to work with such an excellent police team like you," Mulet added.During the inspection, he also watched and spoke highly of the fighting performance of the Chinese police.Mulet is a Guatemalan diplomat and had previously served as the UN Secretary General's Special Representative to Haiti. He succeeded Hedi Annabi as head of the MINUSTAH after Annabi died in the Haiti earthquake.
