SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- The owner of MetroFlex Gym in Oceanside said he is now in compliance with San Diego County's public health order after refusing to close his doors for months.Lou Uridel fought back against the closure orders of all gyms and fitness centers in California, saying he would lose the business he worked so hard to build if he closed his doors. Uridel also said he provides wellness services that don't fall under the order.Friday, Uridel received a letter from Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, to immediately close.The letter states that MetroFlex Gym was operating indoors in violation of state and county public health orders.Uridel quickly moved some fitness equipment on the sidewalk outside of his gym and is now getting a permit from the City of Oceanside to expand and build a more extensive outdoor gym.He said he would be closed down until later this week while he gets it all squared away, but some services inside will continue."We have nutrition supplement store, food pickup services," he explained.Before Dr. Wooten's letter was sent, Oceanside Police visited Uridel's gym a few times to try to gain voluntary compliance with the public health order.Uridel tells 10News he received positive feedback about his gym's cleanliness, and he went above and beyond to ensure the safety of employees and members."We hired a virologist, and they said the biggest things were capacity, social distancing, and airflow. So that's what we focused on," he said.Uridel said he purchased a high quality disinfecting spray gun for ,000 and bought six industrial-grade fans to circulate the air while leaving front and back doors open at his gym.He said the gym was disinfected every hour, equipment was moved to allow for social distancing, and capacity was limited to 20 percent."I've had 38,100 visits since May 8th, we have ten trainers here, and we've not had one outbreak," he said. "It's just like a nail in our back to be treated like an egregious violator. I've had death threats. I have people calling me a mass murderer, irresponsible and selfish; I don't see myself as selfish for trying to provide employment for ten trainers and staff."Uridel said had he followed the closure orders from the beginning and closed down his gym, he would lose the business he worked so hard to build."You can't keep throwing us on life support and expecting us to stay around," he said. San Diego (KGTV)- Parents at several San Diego County high schools have been notified that students could have been exposed to Pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Carlsbad High School confirmed two cases last week. Monday, parents at Mt. Carmel High School were notified that students at that school may have been exposed to the infection, though it wasn't clear how many confirmed cases there have been at the school. “This is probably the most contagious bacterial disease,” says Eric McDonald, with the county’s Health and Human Services Department. “For every one person who has it, when they expose people who have not had or been immunized, they can infect up to 16 or 17 other people.”McDonald says symptoms of a typical cold are a runny nose, low-grade fever, and a cough. For someone who may have pertussis “its the persistence of the cough that should be the number one clue.”So far this year, in San Diego County, there have been over 70 confirmed cases of pertussis. “The number of cases in San Diego are higher than most of California, particularly for infants under the age of four months.”If your child has a cough that lasts almost two weeks, they should be treated by a doctor. McDonald recommends everyone get the DTaP shot to lower the risk of getting pertussis, especially pregnant women in their third trimester. 1347

SAN DIEGO, Calif, (KGTV) - An information meeting Thursday evening is one of the final steps before plans to expand the Miramar Landfill are sent to the state. Currently, the landfill is expected to close Sept. of 2025, but this new plans will extend that to an estimated closure of Nov. of 2031, and also increase the height of the landfill by a maximum of 25 feet. Program Manager for the Solid Waste Local Enforcement Agency Bill Prinz said these dates could change depending on how quickly trash is put into the landfill. He also said this increase in capacity means about 10 million cubic yards of trash are being added to the already about 87 million cubic yards. Currently, 87,760,000 cubic yards of Gross Airspace are being used, and the plan will bring the maximum height to 97,354,7355 cubic yards of Gross Airspace. The meeting Thursday, May 28 is from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be information focused. The public can tune in virtually to listen, ask questions and offer feedback, however no decisions will be made. Prinz said the LEA will send the plans, including the feedback from the meeting, to Sacramento, and the state will have 60 days to either accept or deny the plan. SAN DiEGO (KGTV) - Police deployed tasers to arrest a man following a road rage outburst that got out of control Wednesday evening.Police identified the man as 33-year-old Jason Berard. He was driving a silver SUV that backed into a white pickup truck near Park Boulevard and Howard Avenue in the University Heights neighborhood.  According to the driver of the pickup, they pulled over into a Chevron. The driver of the pickup truck thought they were going to exchange insurance information, but instead, Berard was confrontational.  According to witnesses, Berard punched the other driver before ripping away the man’s cell phone and throwing it on the ground, smashing it.A gas station employee called the police.  After police responded and made contact, police say Berard assaulted an officer. That’s when another officer came to help and fell to the ground during the struggle.Police say Berard took off on foot and got about a block down Howard Avenue but was taken down after an officer using their taser.Berard could be facing battery charges on an officer as well as resisting arrest. 1122
