JINAN, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- A rural endowment insurance scheme, which is being operated on trial basis in part of the country's rural area, may bring an end to the tradition of rural seniors who depend on their children for financial support.Under the insurance scheme introduced in September last year, farmers across the country, who aged 60 years or older, each can receive a pension of 55 yuan (8.3 U.S. dollars) paid by the government per month."I never dreamed I would receive a pension like urban residents do," said Liu Fengyan from Nanlin Village, Pingyi County, in east China's Shandong Province."My wife and I receive 110 yuan in total each month and that is enough to subsidize our daily expenses," Liu told reporters.Liu, together with hundreds of thousands of other elderly rural Chinese across China, is one of the first to benefit from the insurance scheme.The Chinese government has vowed to expand the scheme 10 percent per year and cover the whole country by the year 2020.Those under the age of 60 will have to pay 100 to 800 yuan per year into a fund so they can draw the pension once they hit 60 years of age."Farmers are enthusiastic about the program, and nearly 90 percent of farmers in the pilot areas in Shandong have joined the scheme," said Liu Qianjin, deputy director of the Rural Social Insurance Department of the Shandong Provincial Human Resources and Social Security Bureau.Previous pension programs that were not widely accepted because their funding came from the farmers themselves. The new pension is different - it is government funded.The value of the pension differs across China, depending on the financial status of the relevant local government."My husband's mother can get 260 yuan pension each month. BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) Monday urged drivers to use extreme caution in Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi in southern China which has been hit by freezing rains.Motorists were asked to strictly follow the instructions of traffic police and drive slowly after the expressways in the regions were reopened for use after being temporarily closed due to the severe weather.Freezing rains that swept south China's Guizhou Province, Hunan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have caused road surfaces to ice up in parts of the Lanhai and Hukun Expressways.As a result, many vehicles in the regions were stranded.Local authorities have been ordered to take emergency measures to break up ice found on the roads, keep traffic moving and avoid shutting expressways.As of 4 p.m. Monday, the 1,500 vehicles that were stranded on Hukun Expressway near the juncture of Hunan and Guizhou provinces had safely reached Guizhou, traveling at speeds up to 30 kilometers per hour.Meanwhile, another 1,900 vehicles that had been stranded on National Highway 210 where Guangxi and Guizhou meet, have also reached Guizhou.Noting that Guizhou in the coming three days is expecting more icy rain, according to weather forecasts, Huang Ming, deputy minister at the MPS, stressed improved measures be taken to ensure traffic continues to flow in the region.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Foreign direct investment (FDI) into China hit a record 105.74 billion U.S. dollars last year, up 17.4 percent year on year, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) announced Tuesday.In December alone, China attracted 14.03 billion U.S. dollars of FDI, up 15.6 percent year on year, making it the 17th consecutive month of FDI growth since August 2009.The rapid FDI growth could be attributed to robust development in the service sector and the country's central and western regions, said MOC spokesman Yao Jian.FDI in the service sector rose 28.6 percent last year and that in central and western regions climbed 27.6 percent year on year, Yao said.
