BARCELONA -- For adventure-seekers and travelers, the pandemic has put a damper on outdoor excursions. But for one filmmaker in Barcelona, a canceled family ski trip turned into an opportunity to bring adventure home to his living room.Philipp Klein Herrero is fanatical about skiing.“I am always skiing,” he said. “It's my passion.”So, when the pandemic lockdown forced him to cancel a long-planned family ski trip to France, the filmmaker decided to create a video for them.“I wanted to send them love from where I am and that's how the idea came about.”He taped a GoPro to his ceiling and cleared the room, bringing to life the adventure of a lifetime – on his living room floor.“It starts with me waking up on the side of the mountain in my sleeping bag and having my skis right next to me,” he said. “Once, it gets too steep to walk I switch into ice-climbing mode.”Over the next six and a half hours Klein painstakingly captured this stop-motion odyssey – one frame at a time. He used bed sheets for the side of the mountain.“And of course, nowadays the first thing you do when you reach the summit is you cheer and then take some selfies,” he said.The 57 second film has gone viral, making international headlines.“It just went absolutely crazy from there on,” he said.Klein says his only true desire was to spread a message of hope, inspiring others in challenging times.When asked what the most important thing that he wants people to take away from watching his video, he said that we all have to stay positive.“We have a tricky situation among us, and we literally don’t know how it’s going to end up, but it’s within us to make the best out of it.”He’s proving adventure can be found just about anywhere. 1724

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — A large area of Boulder County, including the towns of Jamestown and Ward, are under a mandatory evacuation order after two new wildfires sparked over the weekend.The 8,788-acre Calwood Fire started Saturday and is burning near the Cal-Wood Education Center in the Jamestown area. Officials Sunday night confirmed that 26 homes were lost to the fire, so far, mostly on the eastern side of the fire along Mountain Ridge Drive and Foothills Ranch Drive. No injuries were reported.The Calwood Fire was about 15% contained as of Sunday night. The most concerning area of the fire was the northern ridge of the fire area, due to the steep, rocky terrain and dry fuels, officials said.On Sunday, a new wildfire, dubbed the Lefthand Canyon Fire, started in the 14000 block of Lefthand Canyon Drive near the town of Ward. It has charred 312 acres as of Sunday night. Crews were still battling the fire Sunday but had contained the blaze north of Lefthand Canyon Drive.Smoke from both fires can be seen throughout most of Boulder and the surrounding area.The Boulder County fires prompted authorities to send out pre-evacuation notices to thousands of residents nearby, including people in the town of Lyons. In the Calwood Fire, there are 1,600 homes and 2,600 structures total in the evacuation area, and around 3,000 people impacted.Several roads are closed, including County Road 87, and officials evacuated Hall Ranch and Heil Valley trails.The map below shows the areas under an evacuation or pre-evacuation order:There is an evacuation check-in point for the Calwood Fire set up at 3460 N. BOCA RATON, Fla. - Inside Boca Helping Hands, Mel Lazerick mans the pantry desk and hands out apples and bags of produce."I like to do things for other people because I've been fortunate," said Mel, who has devoted most of his life volunteering.At 100-years-old, Mel is the oldest volunteer and donates his time to help feed the hungry three days a week. Executive Director Greg Hazle describes Mel as an inspiration."Just to be active at that age and active helping people is an inspiring way to live," Hazle said.Mel has been handing out groceries at Boca Helping Hands for 20 years with a smile and a sense of humor."I worked it in with my golf and tennis, and I was able to find time," Mel said. "People are very nice to me, and I try to be nice to them."Mel moved from Ohio years ago and settled in South Florida. He recently celebrated his 100th birthday at Helping Hands, and has worked side-by-side with long-time buddy Harold Bader."He's very well-liked. He's very hard-working, even though he's 100," said Bader, who picks Mel up and drives him home. "It made me realize age has nothing to do with your abilities to do things, and he proves that every day.Mel has been volunteering for decades. He joined Big Brothers and Big Sisters more than 70 years ago, and he still keeps in contact with his two younger brothers."One is 65-years-old and one is 92," Mel said.Now, Mel will be honored for his service on October 20, when Boca Helping Hands will celebrate its volunteers. Mel said he has no plans to slow down and hopes to volunteer for another 20 years.  1581
