SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Ocean Beach man says he was home when two burglars in a white Mercedes-Benz were raiding his garage and stealing his vehicle.      Along Lotus Street last week around 1:30 in the afternoon, Evan Montoya was in his upstairs bedroom and never heard a thing.  But when he later went down to the garage, he noticed some things were out of place and his car keys were gone.  Outside, the car belonging to Montoya - an Uber and Lyft driver - was nowhere to be found."My heart sank into the pit of my stomach.  That's my livelihood.  They took my entire world when they took my car," said Montoya. But that was hardly the entire loss.  Montoya believes the intruders slipped under the garage door - left open because the garage gets hot - before grabbing anything electric."Basically they went on a shopping spree through our garage and took whatever they wanted," said Montoya.  After the break-in, a neighbor handed him surveillance video showing a white Mercedes sedan stopping in the alley in front of the garage.  In the video, a man and a woman are seen going back and forth to their garage, before they finally drive off."Makes you feel unsafe in your home, which is the one place you're supposed to feel safe," said Montoya.Montoya's car was found abandoned a few days later.  Meanwhile, the video has been shared by neighbors across social media.  Some seven other neighbors have reported similar, recent break-ins. "People going through alleys stealing from houses," said Montoya. If you have any information on the cases, call Crimestoppers at 888-580-8477. 1659

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego State University study abroad student and a University of San Diego graduate student have both tested positive for the coronavirus, the universities announced Friday. The SDSU student was studying abroad in Italy and recently returned home to the United States. The student is self-isolating at his home outside of San Diego County, the university said in a release. They added that the student visited two off campus offices for a brief period of time, and did not attend any classes."Due to the student's limited contact with the campus, we consider that the risk to the greater SDSU campus community is low," said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.A graduate student at the University of San Diego also tested positive for the virus, the university said Friday in a tweet. They say the student lives off-campus. 875

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man was walking downtown to his apartment with a pizza Thanksgiving Day, about to spend the evening alone, when he met a gentleman who asked for a slice. The two sat down, shared the pizza and a conversation. The man who bought the pizza, Broc Costa, said the conversation with the homeless man was enlightening. He learned the man was a veteran trying to get mental health services in California, splitting his time between San Diego and Arizona where his wife and kids live.He said it was too expensive to live or buy a hotel room here so he was on the street. "To be blunt, we're all about one or two paychecks away from being in the same situation," Costa said.So next year he bought 5 pizzas to hand out, the next 20 and the year after that, 20 more. This tradition started 7 years ago.Now Costa's raising money and sending volunteers across the county to deliver pizzas to homeless where they reside."It would be really cool for him to see what he started, because he's just as important in this as I was," Costa said he wishes him the best. This year they're at Petco Park's tailgate parking lot near the pedestrian bridge, in Escondido and Pacific Beach delivering more than 50 pizzas and serving 500 to 1,000, according to Costa. 1304

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Ohio man accused of pepper-spraying 11 San Diego Police officers during a demonstration last month has pleaded not guilty.Denzel Draughn, 28, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to felony counts of unlawful use of tear gas against a peace officer and 11 felony counts of use of force against a peace officer. On Aug. 28, a group of demonstrators protesting the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc., marched through downtown San Diego.See Sky10 video of the demonstration below:Police say that as the group neared 9th and E Streets, a vehicle that was following the group failed to stop at red lights. After police stopped the driver, a crowd began to form near the car and officers who pulled the vehicle over.SDPD says that the group ignored demands to back up from the scene, prompting one officer to pull out pepper spray. Police say one person tried to knock the pepper spray out of the officer's hand, forcing the officer to discharge the spray.Several police officers then tried to arrest the person. As the officers were placing the person in custody, a pepper spray canister fell on the ground. Officers say Draughn picked up the canister and sprayed it twice, hitting 11 officers.SDPD says Draughn fled but was later found and arrested. If convicted, Draughn faces probation to 11 years in jail. He was released on 0,000 bail Wednesday evening."Peaceful protest is a time-honored tradition in our country, and now more than ever it’s critical that we protect an individual’s important First Amendment right. The majority of those protesting in our County are doing so peacefully. But when protests turn violent, it is an insult to the rightful expressions of peaceful protesters, and we must act to protect the community," District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement. "Protesting is an inalienable right recognized by the U.S. Constitution. Rioting, burning down businesses and assaulting peace officers are crimes that will be prosecuted." 1990
