INDIANAPOLIS — Going back to work after giving birth is never easy. One Indianapolis mother had to endure not only everyday life with a newborn but controversy with pumping breast milk at her place of employment.Katrina Culhane returned from maternity leave in July of after having her son, Hunter. She worked for the Indiana BMV's central office in downtown Indianapolis. To continue breastfeeding, she needed to pump at work."I thought being the state they would have a plan for me," Culhane said.Culhane says her options on location to pump were extremely limited. One choice was to go up several floors to another department where another mother was often using a room. Her second choice was to reserve a conference room."They kept promising it to employee relations that they were going to have a room and they never had a room," Culhane said. "It wasn't OK that I had to constantly pump in the bathroom."Culhane says she felt frustration from her bosses when needing to adjust her scheduled breaks to make her reservation in the conference room."I worked hard for them. They treated me like dirt. They made me feel like crap. I just want to go pump," Culhane said. "It was stressful. Every single day...it was so stressful."State law requires the following from state and political agencies:Paid breaks to pump.Reasonable effort to provide a room or other location other than a toilet stall.Reasonable efforts to provide a refrigerator to keep breast milk cold."It is absolutely important for a workplace to support these moms, especially when you are first going back to work," Lauren Duncan, a certified lactation specialist, and Donor Mother Coordinator at The Milk Bank, said.RTV6 reached out to the BMV to get a response to this situation. A spokesperson said Culhane was fired for violating the state's workplace harassment prevention policy. The spokesperson also told RTV6 there are plans to add a private room for mothers to breastfeed on the fourth floor of the building where the BMV is located."I just want to pump for my son," Culhane said. "And I wanted it to be known that no one deserves to be treated like that in the workplace. No one."Culhane denies harassing anyone during her time at the BMV and feels she was fired for complaining about lack of space to pump.The BMV says they do have a private location in the Indiana State Government Center where she worked in accordance with the law and the State's Support for Nursing Mothers Policy, 2479
Law enforcement officials on Sunday identified the man who killed seven people and wounded 22 others in a shooting spree in West Texas as Seth Ator, 36.Ator was arrested in 2001 for criminal trespass and evading arrest, both misdemeanors, according to public records. Adjudication was deferred, though the details of the case were not immediately available. His record also includes a 2018 traffic citation for a federal motor carrier safety violation, according to Ector County court records.Ator was pulled over by Texas troopers in Midland on Saturday afternoon for failing to use his signal, police said. He then shot at them with what police described as an AR-type weapon and sped away. Driving on streets and the highway, he sprayed bullets randomly at residents and motorists, police said.The man then hijacked a postal truck and ditched his gold Honda, shooting at people as he made his way into Odessa about 20 miles away. There, police confronted him in a movie theater parking lot and killed him in a shootout.Among the wounded were a 17-month-old girl and three law enforcement officers, hospital and police officials said.It's unclear what his motive was. Kiley Winkelhake has been living with anxiety since she can remember."I would go to daycare, and they would have to rip me off my mom because of my separation anxiety. I would cry every day; I was in hysterics," Winkelhake recalls.At the age of 7, she started seeing a psychiatrist and was put on her first medication. By the time she was 12, she was diagnosed with depression and tried just about every legal medication for kids. "I got super depressed and really hopeless," Winkelhake says. "I didn't think I was going to make it to graduate at all. I was so sad, and I was pushing everyone away. I was really not healthy... at all."She felt like she was drowning. She says the voices around her were muffled, and mundane tasks like getting out of bed were suddenly very scary. Winkelhake had become suicidal. "I just felt like I was a burden to everyone, and I think a lot of the time when you're depressed and when you die by suicide, you're thinking you will make the people that love you be in less pain, and so when I was suicidal, I just was like 'Well, I think it will make my parent's life easier, and my friend's life easier if I just... died,'" she says. Through the help of friends, she connected with therapy, and with art as her outlet, Winkelhake made it to graduation. She says she's feeling much better today."I'm 20 now, and I never really thought I would be 20," she says. But I'm alive, and it's kind of amazing, I guess."She knows anxiety and depression will forever be a part of her, and learning how to live with it is her current mission."It's not about getting rid of the pain or the illness. It's about learning how to control it, and not let it control you anymore," Winkelhake says.We often hear about those who have taken their life, but health professionals say a majority of people struggling with mental health issues are able to find happiness again."If there's any way that what I can say can impact someone and keep them alive, or help them get help, then I want to be able to do that," Winkelhake says."What we know is that suicide is preventable. If people get access to resources, the crises in their life that are leading them to be suicidal, often pass," Julie Cerel, with American Association of Suicidology, said says.National organizations like American Association of Suicidology and Sources of Strength say it's important to pay attention to people like Kiley because she's living proof that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. "We can wrestle with mental illness. We can wrestle with really difficult things in our lives and get through that, and still really live a healthy life," Sources of Strength Executive Director Scott LoMurray says.Sources of Strength is a program aimed at empowering teenagers and young adults to seek connections and healthy behavior. The organization offers support for young people dealing with depression and anxiety. But what makes it unique from other organizations is its upstream approach to prevent students from feeling suicidal in the first place."We spend a lot more of our time actually focusing on strength, focusing on resiliency, focusing on recovery, focusing on health and help and what those things look like," LoMurray says.One strategy is teaching students about coping mechanisms. Sources of strength calls it "protective" factors, which includes family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality, medical access, and mental health."That might be listening to music, that might be talking to a friend, that might be a mindfulness practice or a gratitude practice where every night you write down three things you're grateful for. Those things actually have really profound impacts on our brain," LoMurray explains.LoMurray says volunteering and healthy exercise can also put somebody in a better head space, giving them a sense of purpose and worth. But in the end, there isn't one answer to solving mental health. It's a complicated issue, which is why both LoMurray and Kiley are thankful for -- what they say has been -- a recent culture change around the topic."I've definitely seen a shift in people talking about mental health more, and embracing taking care of yourself and not being as judgmental on taking medication," Winkelhake says."The reality is, being very clear and direct with someone and saying, 'I'm really worried about you... that you might be thinking about suicide,' is actually a relief for people who are thinking about suicide. If someone is that desperate, it's likely suicide is already on their mind," Cerel says.Winkelhake says she appreciates the conversation because she knows she's not alone. "I think it's cool to see people that are alive living with this illness because we talk so much about the people that pass away from the illness, but we don't talk about the people that are living with it and learning how to live with it," she said.She says it's helpful to know everyone is more accepting of the illness. Winkelhake now lives her life using art as her solace and finding a reason to be happy one day at a time."I just hope that I can live in an honest way that brings happiness to me and the people around me," Winkelhake says. It's a reality on health care that so many of us are living. A new survey released by West Health and Gallup finds 65 million adults had a health issue in the past year, but they didn't get treatment for it because of the cost. One of the biggest issues of health care costs is the surprise medical bills. The issue has become such a problem, Congress held its first-ever congressional hearing on surprise medical bills Tuesday. “If your kid gets hurt playing soccer and you go to an [emergency doctor], there's a really good chance you're gonna get a surprise medical bill,” says Frederick Isasi. Isasi is the executive director for Families USA, an advocacy group for health care consumers. “More people are scared of hospital bills and health care bills than getting sick,” Isasi says. “That's where we are as a nation. There's more harm happening in this country, in some ways psychologically, around the cost of health care than actually being scared about their health.” Isasi and others testified about the need for federal laws to protect patients, including making hospitals and doctors provide billing costs upfront and putting a cap on costs. A new survey found in the past year, Americans borrowed billion to pay for health care, because they couldn't afford it. “Almost half of Americans, they have less than 0 in saving, so a surprise medical bill for ,000 means, ‘I'm gonna have to miss my car payment, miss my mortgage payment. I'm gonna have to take out of my retirement account,’” Isasi says. But at Tuesday’s hearing, lawmakers openly admitted finding a real solution will be a challenge. “The problem is this whole process of health care is so complex,” Rep. Rick Allen (R-Georgia) relayed at the hearing. Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pennsylvania) agreed, stating “the solutions I’m hearing don't really sound very workable in the context of our present medical system, and that's where I really struggle to understand how we're gonna fix this.” Some states have passed legislation to try and protect patients from surprise bills, but about 60 percent of employer-based plans are governed by federal law, not state law. 2153

However, more companies are now making it “Casual Friday” every day.At the digital media firm Inboxlab, employees get to wear jeans, t-shirts and sneakers to the office."When people are wearing something they enjoy wearing or feel comfortable in, they will actually be able to perform at their best," says Sean Devlin, the vice president of operations at Inboxlab.Employee Victoria Hurd agrees, saying previous jobs did not give her the freedom she has at Inboxlab."The median age was 45 to 50. The expectation was completely different than what it is here,” she explains. “I had to wear a pantsuit, nice shirt, heels and things like that every single day. It was not stifling, but I felt regimented."Many people think the trend of dressing more casual has come from the younger workers."There’s a lot more of this millennial vibe and people wanting to get much more out of their lives than just at work," Hurd says.Dressing casual and comfortable is great, but there is such a thing as too casual."You don't want someone in a tracksuit, but you do want them to feel comfortable with what they are wearing,” Devlin says.Since every day is casual day, the company treats Fridays a little differently; they have theme days. Last week, the team dressed for Pride Week. "It’s more relaxed. We have open lines of communication amongst all of the team members,” Hurd says about the work environment. “There’s a really great culture at Inboxlab, in part because we are able to dress how we want to." 1560
