LA MESA (KGTV) -- The City of La Mesa has issued a Temporary Area Restriction (TAR) prohibiting certain items around the La Mesa Civic Center area. The move comes ahead of a protest scheduled to take place outside of the La Mesa Police Department on Saturday, August 1, at 3:30 p.m.The La Mesa Police Department said Friday in a Facebook post that it has "made numerous attempts to communicate with organizers of the protest and march so we can work together to ensure a safe environment where their voices can be heard. Unfortunately, all attempts to contact the organizers have been unsuccessful." 607

La Mesa (KGTV)- It’s being called one of the most progressive marijuana ordinances in the county. The city of La Mesa plans to unveil its proposed rules this week. City leaders believe lifting limits is the key to defeating illegal pot shops. If passed, the City of La Mesa would be the first in the county to put forth an ordinance without a hard cap on the number of dispensaries within city limits. “We didn’t play that game,” says La Mesa City Council Member Bill Baber. “We’re basically saying they’re in our commercial areas, they have to be regulated, and the market itself will flush out how many get to exist.” Councilmember Bill Baber says the proposed ordinance would weed out illegal pot shops by operating a path to run a legitimate business. It’s a different approach than the one in Chula Vista. City leaders hope a limited number of legal dispensaries will drive customers away from illegal pot shops. Currently, there is only one legally operating dispensary within La Mesa city limits. “We’re proposing our dispensaries that have legally been selling medicinal marijuana to also move one step forward and to sell recreational. It’s the same product.”Under the new laws, the dispensaries will be taxed. The money will go to the city’s general fund. It will help with putting more officers on the street and shutting down illegal operations. Councilman Baber says the city estimates the new ordinance will bring in nearly million a year in city taxes. The funds will also be used to clean up old run-down buildings that once housed illegal dispensaries. “In 4 years our city attorney and our police have shut down 26 of these,” says Baber. West La Mesa Resident, Erik Egelko, says the boarded-up businesses are now bringing in squatters. Behind an old, illegal pot shop on El Cajon Boulevard sits old furniture, trash and the rancid smell of urine. “It just really turned into a slum,” says Egelko. “I see west la Mesa as having this incredible potential.” The La Mesa City Council will be reviewing the ordinance during tomorrow’s city council meeting. (KGTV) -- Authorities say a firefighter has been killed battling the largest record blaze in California history.State fire officials say the firefighter died Monday at the site of the Mendocino Complex fire north of San Francisco. More details have not yet been released.Six firefighters have now died in connection with a wave of massive wildfires that struck Northern California in the past weeks.The deadliest wildfire, the Carr Fire, has left a total of eight people dead, including three firefighters.Two firefighters have died fighting a fire near Yosemite National Park.The Mendocino Complex — actually twin fires being fought together — has burned for more than two weeks. The fire has burned nearly 150 homes and about 547 square miles of brush and forest. That's an area larger than the city of Los Angeles. 842

Leaders of the world’s most powerful nations wrapped up the Group of 20 summit on Sunday, vowing to spare no effort to protect lives and ensure affordable access to COVID-19 vaccines for all people.The two-day summit of heads of state was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed at least 1.38 million people globally, with the world’s highest death tolls recorded in seven of the G-20 countries. The virus has wiped out hundreds of millions of jobs globally and plunged millions into extreme poverty.The virus “revealed vulnerabilities in our preparedness and response and underscored our common challenges,” the G-20 said in a final statement that focused heavily on battling the coronavirus, enhancing environmental protections and supporting the global economy.The group vowed “to spare no effort to protect lives.”The G-20, which includes the U.S., India, China, the U.K., France, Germany, Japan and others, also stressed the importance of global access to COVID-19 vaccines, drugs and tests.“We will spare no effort to ensure their affordable and equitable access for all people, consistent with members’ commitments to incentivize innovation,” the statement said.The G-20 expressed support for efforts like COVAX, an international initiative to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to countries worldwide. The U.S., however, has declined to join under President Donald Trump.German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters Sunday in Berlin after the virtual summit that Germany had given financial support to the COVAX initiative, but that more money was needed.The G-20 statement did not directly address an urgent appeal by U.N. LINDA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A body was discovered in Tecolote Canyon Saturday evening, according to the San Diego Police Department.Police said a transient alerted them to the body in an area off High Knoll road, east of the Tecolote Canyon Golf Course and west of Genesee Ave around 5:45 p.m. A team from the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office worked to extract the body, carrying it about 150 feet up the side of the steep canyon.Police estimate the body had been there for several days and had started decomposing. They believe it is a white man but have not determined an age.At this time the cause of death has not been determined, however investigators do not suspect foul play. 719
