SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Intense heat is sparking fires and sending San Diegans to the coast seeking relief."The temperatures today are pretty extreme," Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said, adding the brush is dry from the heat and lack of rain making Wednesday's forecasted record heat very dangerous.A brush fire sparked in Ramona near Ramona St. and Boundary Ave around 11 a.m.The triple-digit heat causing concern for Fire Chief Jason Lambirth with the U.S. Forest Service, "we really take care of our own people, keep a close eye on them, make sure they're hydrated with water and Gatorade and go from there."Firefighters kept the blaze within a couple of acres, according to Shoots.A huge relief to neighbors, like Leanne Plunkett who has lived in Ramona for 44 years. "Oh I'm relaxed now, but it was pretty hectic for a while!" Plunkett said.She was stepping into the shower when law enforcement knocked on their door to issue evacuation orders. Plunkett said she jumped out, threw on clothes, and started packing jewelry and important documents.She said they had to evacuate twice in the past, including the Cedar Fire.The heat taking its toll on San Diegans across the county. Many, like Oscar Fuentes from El Cajon, headed to the beach."It was starting to get to 110 degrees out there so we decided to hit the beach... It's a lot more tolerable that's for sure it's really nice, I expect it's going to be a lot better when we get in that water."He's not alone according to Sgt. Lonnie Stephens with San Diego Fire Rescue's Lifeguard Division."We're still seeing elevated beach crowds on the weekends and during the weekdays." He said normally crowds dissipate after Labor Day but that hasn't happened yet."Throughout this heat, which has been ongoing for quite some time, yes we have had some citizens that have had some heat-related illness." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Images of burning homes, helicopters and flames are now a regular occurrence in California.This summer, that wildfire threat became real for the Del Cerro community.“We could hear the exploding palm trees, we could smell the toxic, frightening smoke," remembers Glenn Thomas, Vice Chair of Friends of Del Cerro.The group wanted to do something to pay back firefighters for all they do for the community. They wanted to know what the department needs to help firefighters do their job better. “We believe you find out what people want and you give it to them!” said Thomas.Friends of Del Cerro teamed up with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation to make something happen.What the department needs, Thomas learned, is more wildland firefighting hand tools. While these tools are currently on brush trucks, the department wants them on every engine.“There are so many more vegetation fires, and they grow so much bigger now," said Deputy Chief Steve Wright. “Something we needed that’s going to be a force-multiplier on vegetation fires that we didn’t have the immediate budget for."The group plans to raise ,000 for the tools and is halfway there thanks to a generous donation from the Padres.If you'd like to help, donate here. 1261

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's already been one year since the San Diego Zoo Safari Park saw the first southern white rhino born through artificial insemination arrive at its park.Edward turned one-year-old on July 28, celebrating with a party at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center with his mother Victoria, 8-month-old female calf Future, and her mother Amani."Even though he doesn’t know it’s his birthday, it is very special to see Edward – a healthy, robust rhino - running around, enjoying his special treats," said Barbara Durrant, director of Reproductive Sciences at San Diego Zoo Global. "We aren’t just celebrating his birthday but also are celebrating the significance of his birth."Edward was born last year after hormone-induced ovulation and artificial insemination with frozen semen from southern white rhino Maoto on March 22, 2018. Victoria gave birth 16 months later. Edward's birth was the zoo's first successful attempt to birth a southern white rhino via artificial insemination and a critical step toward recovering its distant cousin, the northern white rhino. Currently, only two northern white rhinos exist in the world and both are female.Researchers believe that a northern white rhino calf could be born from artificial insemination within 10 to 20 years. 1313

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Keep an eye out for two new residents at the San Diego Zoo - two penguin chicks named Lucas and Dot. The three-month-old penguin chicks will reside in the Cape Fynbos habitat with a colony of 29 adult penguins. After weeks of careful planning—including providing the chicks with a private pool, where they learned how to swim the hand raised penguins got to see their new home. The two juveniles immediately started swimming and climbing rocks, while keepers vigilantly monitored their progress. Animal care staff said the initial introduction went very smoothly and the birds behaved exactly as keepers had hoped, but they plan to allow only closely monitored interactions for the next few days.“We will be pulling [Lucas and Dot] back at night,” said Debbie Denton, keeper. “We don’t want to leave them out unsupervised yet. We just want to give them a few days out here with the rest of the colony, and make sure that they are comfortable enough to do OK on their own overnight.”Lucas and Dot were hatched in San Diego from eggs supplied though a breeding loan by the Minnesota Zoo, which has successfully hatched more than 24 eggs since opening its African penguin habitat in 2011.    Guests can visit Lucas and Dot at their home in the Cape Fynbos habitat, inside Africa Rocks at the Zoo.    1379
