SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and elements of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group deployed from San Diego Monday in support of global maritime security operations, Navy officials announced.Prior to departing, the strike group completed a composite training unit exercise called COMPTUEX, which is designed to fully integrate units of a carrier strike group while testing its ability as a whole to carry out sustained combat operations from the sea.Ships, squadrons and staffs have been tested across every core warfare area within their mission sets through a variety of simulated and live events, including air warfare, strait transits, and responses to surface and subsurface contacts and electronic attacks, according to U.S. Third Fleet public affairs."The carrier strike group team is trained and ready," said Rear Adm. We are honored to answer the call and operate forward."In addition to conducting maritime security operations whenever and wherever called upon, strike-group units will participate in cooperative engagements, multilateral exercises and unit-level training designed to improve capability and capacity among Navy units and partner nations in the regions they may operate in.All personnel assigned to the group completed a minimum 14-day quarantine ashore and were tested for COVID-19 prior to getting underway with their respective units. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 283 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths, raising the region's total number of cases to 26,984, with the death toll remaining at 533.The county reported 7,505 diagnostic tests Saturday, 4% of which returned positive. The 14-day rolling average of positive tests is 5.6%. The target set by California is less than 8%. The seven-day daily average of tests is 9,201. Of the total positive cases, 2,391 -- or 8.9% -- required hospitalization and 614 -- or 2.3% -- were admitted to an intensive care unit.Three new community setting outbreaks were reported Saturday in a restaurant/bar, food processing facility and business. In the past seven days, 11 community outbreaks were confirmed. The number of community outbreaks is above the trigger of seven or more in seven days. A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households.The next pandemic briefing from health officials will be Monday.Cal State San Marcos sent an advisory to students and staff Thursday notifying them that two employees who were working on campus have tested positive for COVID-19."One individual was last on campus on July 16 and the other individual on July 17," the advisory said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Kmart store in Spring Valley is among 46 unprofitable outlets slated to start closeout sales this week, according to an announcement from the Sears Holding Corp.Five stores in California are among the 12 Kmart and 33 Sears stores slated to close by November. This includes the Kmart store at 935 Sweetwater Road in Spring Valley.The other California closures are Kmart stores in Los Angeles, Antioch, and Clovis and a Sears in Santa Cruz.Sears Holding Corp. owns both the Sears and Kmart chains. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors will meet in closed session Monday to consider taking legal action against the state to prevent potentially sliding back into the most restrictive tier on Tuesday.The Board met Thursday night to discuss their options after Gov. Gavin Newsom rejected a county effort Wednesday to discount the more than 700 positive tests recorded by San Diego State University since the semester began.The supervisors did not make a decision on taking legal action against the state in their meeting Thursday, but Supervisor Greg Cox said the board will meet in closed-session Monday after receiving more information, "to consider any further actions."County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher was vague about the closed meeting Thursday, but urged caution."In general, I believe we should be fighting COVID-19 and not the state of California," he said. "We do not yet know what our case rate will be next Tuesday and will have to evaluate that number in order to understand any possible impact."The county will find out Tuesday if it will slip back to the purple tier of the state's coronavirus reopening roadmap. If so, it would likely shutter indoor operations for restaurants, movie theaters, houses of worship and gyms, limit retail businesses to just 25% capacity and have major impacts on indoor business for most other industries until the county can improve its numbers.Should the county be placed in that tier, it would have to wait a minimum of three weeks before moving back to less restrictive tiers.If state data announced Tuesday shows the county has a case rate higher than 7, it could be moved into the purple tier -- the most restrictive. Every seven years, NIH competitively renews its funding of the HIV clinical trials networks operating in the United States and internationally.During the current application process, the UC San Diego AntiViral Research Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Houston AIDS Research Team and Durban International clinical research sites were chosen to work collaboratively on research priorities for the NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases HIV/AIDS Adult Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network.The Chennai Antiviral Research and Treatment Center, University of Southern California and University of Miami clinical research sites were also chosen to join UCSD to serve as qualified reserve or protocol-specific sites as needed for future clinical trials."UC San Diego has helped shape HIV/AIDS research and treatment through innovative research since the inception of the adult and pediatric therapeutic clinical trials networks in 1986," said principal investigator Dr. Constance A.
