SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Metropolitan Transit System is increasing bus and trolley services as the economy continues to reopen.MTS will increase weekday midday service on the UC San Diego Blue Line beginning Monday, June 15, followed by service increases on dozens of bus routes in late June."As we continue the regional reopening of our economy, we know more people will need the services that MTS provides. We want people to know that San Diego's transit system will continue to be a safe and reliable option as possible," said MTS Board Chair Nathan Fletcher. "We've strengthened our already-enhanced sanitizing protocols on vehicles and at stations and implemented policies to better protect our passengers and employees. We are now increasing service to help reliability and allow for greater physical distancing of passengers."Beginning Monday, the UC San Diego Blue Line trolley -- which connects the San Ysidro international border to downtown San Diego -- will increase its service frequency to every 7 1/2 minutes from 4:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., and keep 15-minute frequencies until 9 p.m., followed by every 30 minutes until the end of the service day.Weekday ridership on the Blue Line plummeted 69% between February 24 and April 20, from 63,715 daily riders to just 19,787. Since April 20, average weekday ridership has increased 28%, topping out at 25,367 the week of June 1. More frequency will give more opportunity for passengers to practice social distancing on board and on platforms when possible. Service on the Orange Line and Sycuan Green Line will remain unchanged.While trolley service will first be increasing to closely mirror pre- COVID-19 levels, MTS is also making preparations to increase bus service in the coming weeks. Schedules and routes are being finalized. The goal is to provide service increases that meet market demands. MTS reduced weekday service levels approximately 25% on April 13 to address record-low ridership while still providing critical service for essential workers and trips.In addition to service increases, MTS says it also continues to improve its already-strict safety and sanitizing protocols. The latest development on that front is retrofitting buses with germ barriers to better protect bus operators. Barriers will also allow the agency to return to front- door boarding, which gives passengers more room in which to spread out. MTS has only allowed rear-door boarding since April 1 to protect the health of bus operators.MTS continues to operate about 95 bus routes and three trolley lines. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials confirmed 330 new COVID-19 cases Saturday, increasing the region's total to 46,331, but no new deaths, with that total remaining at 775.Five new community outbreaks were confirmed as of Friday, three in business settings, one in a restaurant/bar and one in a government setting. From Sept. 19 to Sept. 25, 18 community outbreaks were confirmed. The number of community outbreaks remains above the trigger of seven or more in seven days.The county reported 9,914 tests as of Friday and the percentage of new laboratory-confirmed cases was 3%.The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 3.3%. The target is less than 8%. The seven-day daily average of tests is 8,561.Sixteen new cases of COVID-19 were reported Saturday by San Diego State University, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1,064 since Aug. 24, the first day of instruction for the fall semester.The new totals reported by Student Health Services reflect numbers as of 6 p.m. Friday.Of the students living on campus, 380 have tested positive and students living off campus totaled 663 positive cases, health services said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate fell in September with multiple industries in the county showing employment increases, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday.San Diego County's overall unemployment rate fell two-10ths of a percent from 3.6 percent in August to 3.4 percent in September. The September rate was also lower than the county's unemployment rate one year ago, when it sat at 3.7 percent.Total nonfarm employment increased in September compared with August by 700 jobs while agricultural employment increased by 100 jobs. Nonfarm employment now sits at 1,479,500.Government and educational and health services jobs all saw month-over-month increases in employment, largely due to the end of summer recesses and breaks according to the EDD. Local and federal government jobs increased by 5,100 in the county while educational and health services jobs increased by a total of 1,600.The leisure and hospitality industry saw the biggest decline in month-over-month job numbers, losing 2,000 jobs due to the end of summer recesses and breaks. Leisure and hospitality also saw year-over-year losses of 1,700 jobs.Yearly nonfarm employment increased 26,900 jobs, or 1.9 percent, between September 2017 and 2018,  while farm jobs increased by 100 from 2017 to 2018, a 1.1 percent growth rate. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sheriff's deputies in East County arrested 36 people today in a warrant sweep, clearing 44 misdemeanor warrants and two felony warrants.The sweep included the cities and unincorporated areas of Lemon Grove, Spring Valley, Jamul, El Cajon, La Mesa and Rancho San Diego.The Sheriff's Department's Court Services Bureau-Field Division conducted the search and arrest of people with outstanding warrants regardless of the charge or bail amount.The department encouraged people who have outstanding warrants to turn themselves in between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at any sheriff's court facilities. 633

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 352 new COVID-19 cases and no new fatalities, raising the region's total to 57,102 cases with deaths remaining at 891.Of the 12,879 tests reported Saturday, 3% returned positive with 239 people hospitalized.The county avoided the state's purple tier, the most restrictive, for yet another week on Tuesday, remaining in the less restrictive red tier of the state's four-tiered coronavirus monitoring system.The county's adjusted case rate dropped to 6.5 new daily COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population.According to the California Department of Public Health, the county's unadjusted case rate is 7.4 per 100,000 -- enough to be in the purple tier, which has a floor of 7 per 100,000. However, the high volume of tests the county is able to perform daily allows for an adjustment from the state. This adjustment has kept the county in the red tier for several weeks, saving it from having to shut down nearly all nonessential indoor businesses.The state data, updated every Tuesday, reflects the previous week's case data to determine where counties stand in the state's reopening system.San Diego County did show modest improvement, dropping 0.4 from last week's unadjusted case rate of 7.8. The testing positivity rate continued an upward trend, rising 0.2% from last week to reach 3.5%, but remains low enough for this metric to remain in the orange tier. If a county reports statistics meeting metrics in a higher tier for two consecutive weeks, it will move into that more restrictive tier for a minimum of three weeks.The state's health equity metric, which looks at the testing positivity for areas with the lowest healthy conditions, dropped from 5.5% to 5.1% and entered the orange tier. This metric does not move counties backward to more restrictive tiers, but is required to advance.All students at San Diego State University are under a stay-at-home advisory until 6 a.m. Monday.
