LOS ANGELES, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Customer complaints of an "uncharacteristic odor" prompted Johnson & Johnson to recall about 57,000 bottles of the prescription anti-seizure drug, Johnson & Johnson announced on Thursday. The recall affects two lots of the Topamax 100 mg tablets made by the company's Ortho-McNeil Neurologics division, Johnson & Johnson said. The drug was shipped and distributed between Oct. 19, 2010 and Dec. 28, 2010 in the United States and Puerto Rico. There were four consumer complaints about an odor believed to be caused by trace amounts of the chemical TBA (2,4,6 tribromoanisole), which is applied to wooden pallets used to transport and store packaging materials, Johnson & Johnson said. The recall is not expected to lead to a product shortage at the market, Ortho-McNeil Neurologics said.Similar complaints of a moldy, musty odor have led to the recalls of millions of bottles of Tylenol, Motrin and Benadryl products earlier.Last month, the U.S. government said it was taking over three Tylenol plants operated by McNeil, and the Food and Drug Administration launched a criminal investigation into safety issues at the factories, CNN reported.

SANAA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- In response to earlier reports that a Chinese-flagged commercial ship was hijacked by Somali pirates off Yemeni coast, the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (MSA) said Sunday that the ship has never been hijacked, and is now sailing safely with escort of the Chinese anti-piracy navy fleet. Both the "Tien Hau" ship, which was registered in Hong Kong, China, and its 22-member crew, are safe, a MSA official confirmed to Xinhua over the phone. The center contacted the ship to make sure it was safe, he added. The ship had been followed by a suspicious boat for a while, but it was never attacked or hijacked, the official said.Earlier, Yemeni Interior Ministry had said the ship was hijacked by pirates some 20 kilometers off the Yemeni island of Al-Tair off the city port of al-Hudaida, and was heading to Somali coast. The Gulf of Aden is considered as one of the world's most dangerous waters because of rampant piracy.

LOS ANGELES, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The death rate in the United States reached an all-time low in 2009, dropping 2.3 percent from 2008, a newly released report said. This was the 10th straight year of decline, demonstrating that Americans are living longer than ever, according to the report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics. The nation saw a drop from 758.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2008 to 741 per 100,000 people in 2009 when 2,436,682 deaths were reported, said the report published by HealthDay News on Wednesday. However, life expectancy for blacks remained unchanged -- 70.9 years for men and 77.4 years for women. The disparity between whites and blacks is now 4.3 years, representing a 0.2 percent increase from 2008 to 2009, the report found. The report said that deaths fell in 10 of the 15 leading causes of death -- heart disease dropped 3.7 percent, cancer fell 1.1 percent, and stroke declined 4.2 percent.Deaths from Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, chronic lower respiratory diseases and accidents all declined 4.1 percent, according to the report.Deaths from flu and pneumonia fell 4.7 percent, and deaths from septicemia, a bacterial infection, decreased 1.8 percent, the report said.Deaths from homicides fell 6.8 percent, but suicides increased from 35,933 in 2008 to 36,547 in 2009. Other than suicide, which overtook septicemia as the 10th leading cause of death, the ranking of the leading causes of death was unchanged from 2008 to 2009, the report noted.Infant mortality hit a record low in 2009, falling from 6.59 deaths per 1,000 births in 2008 to 6.42, representing a 2.6 percent decrease, according to the report. The report, however, did not give reasons for these trends.Experts think behavioral changes, particularly the decline in smoking, are partly responsible for the improvements. The report's lead author Kenneth Kochanek, a statistician at the center, said this is preliminary data, and the final data, which should be available this summer, may shed some light on the findings.

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhuanet) -- YouTube is adding more than 3,000 mainstream movies to its movie-rental service, media reports said Tuesday.Google Inc-owned YouTube is offering a mix of recent Hollywood blockbusters, independent and foreign movies for 99 cents up to 3.99 U.S. dollars each. The additions will push YouTube’s total movie rentals available to more than 6,000.In addition, hundreds of movies, including some offered before the latest launch, are available for free viewing as with other clips.“By expanding our content partnerships worldwide and stimulating the success of budding filmmakers, artists and entrepreneurs, we’ll ensure that YouTube remains the best place for the world to see and discover rich talent,” Salar Kamangar, head of YouTube, said.YouTube, which built a following by letting users post home videos and amateur clips, is counting on professionally produced content to draw more visitors and keep them on the site longer.YouTube users currently spend about 15 minutes on the site per day on average, compared with the five hours they spend on television, the company said.
