SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Carlos woman says a buzzing sound caught her off guard at home. When she looked around, she spotted a drone hovering near her bedroom window, peering in.  Yvette Skalka was hanging her laundry in the backyard on September 6 when she heard the noise. She says she looked up and a small, white drone. “It hovered for a good 3 to 5 minutes.  It gave me an uneasy feeling. It didn’t feel right,” said Skalka.The drone flew up to the top of a palm on the property for a few minutes, before flying back down.“It was near three dogs and driving them crazy, like it was tormenting them,” said Skalka.Eventually, the drone flew off.  Skalka filed a police report and posted details on the Nextdoor app.  Another neighbor responded that she believed the same drone has recently hovered near her ground-floor bedroom, watching her college-age daughter.  That family also filed a police report. 956

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake along Mexico’s southern coastline Tuesday was felt hundreds of miles away.Thousands of people ran into the streets as buildings swayed back and forth. A hospital in Mexico City was evacuated; patients were sent to wait outside until they were given the all-clear.According to Mexico’s civil protection agency, four people were confirmed dead.The earthquake was centered just east of the popular tourist destination Huatulco, Oaxaca. According to Mexican officials, the damage was not widespread.“Right now, we’re working together with the Mexican Army, the Mexican Marines, and the National Guard,” said Ricardo Gamez, personal secretary to the mayor of Huatulco.“The Mayor, Giovanne González García, has visited hospitals, checking buildings, homes,” he said. “We have a lot of damage. We are doing evaluations of the houses and the buildings.”Gamez said shelters were set up for anyone in need.In San Diego County, Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina was left with concerns as he has close ties to the coastal town.“There’s a strong Oaxacan community in southern California, especially San Diego,” said Dedina. “Most hardcore surfers in San Diego know that coast really well.”Outside of his duties as mayor, Dedina runs Wildcoast, an international team that conserves coastal marine ecosystems and wildlife, including sea turtles in Mexico.“We have an office in Huatulco, our office received some damage I talked to our staff member there who was shaken up and in the office when the earthquake happened,” he said. “Talked to our interns, we have two paid interns that come from an indigenous community where they work to protect sea turtles; they were on the road near the epicenter when it happened.”Dedina said all three people were not injured.“It’s really a remarkable place in Mexico and probably some of the warmest, friendliest people on the planet,” he said. “Very shocked when we heard this happened and wishing our best to all our friends in Oaxaca.” 2024

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man wielding a metal chain was shot and killed by a two-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department this week, the department announced Saturday.SDPD said 48-year-old Vaugh Harrison Denham, of San Diego, was shot and killed by Officer Corey Pitts after Denham refused to obey officers' orders to drop a machete he had reportedly used to attack someone Wednesday.Police said they arrived at a violent disturbance call involving a "machete-style" weapon in the 4000 block of Boston Ave. just after 5 p.m. Police found a 57-year-old victim with injuries that suggested he'd been attacked with an "edged weapon."ORIGINAL STORY: Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in SouthcrestThe victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.At the scene, police tried to contact Denham around the corner from the initial scene. He was uncooperative with officers, police said, and a Taser was deployed after the confrontation escalated.Witness statements indicated Denham approached officers with a metal chain and refused verbal commands to stop by officers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company created technology for NASA's 2020 Mars rover, launching in July.The Perseverance is set to launch July 20, at 9:15 a.m. EST.NASA's been working on this project for more than a decade, drawing from past missions with hopes of finding evidence of past life on the red planet."It's a really exciting mission!" Mike Carpenter, VP of Engineering at KULR Technology said."We don't know for sure what they're going to find, but if they find any hard evidence of life that would be wonderful." Carpenter is thrilled to be a part of this mission, bringing a piece of San Diego to Mars.Carpenter said the company is known for it's technology that keeps batteries from exploding.For the rover, they created heat sinks that control the temperature around sensitive instruments. Specifically the heat sinks on Perseverance protect SHERLOC, a detector on the arm of the rover that looks for signs of past life.KULR sent similar tech to Mercury, but this is their first trip to Mars."It is the largest most sophisticated rover NASA has sent there," Carpenter said.According to NASA, Perseverance will be landing in the Jezero Crater, the site of an ancient river delta.The mission has four Science Goals:1. Determine whether life ever arose on Mars.2. Characterize the climate on Mars. (Seeking to find if an ancient climate could have supported life.)3. Characterize the geology of Mars.4. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego dentist is giving parents a new tool to win the battle over brushing.Dr. Kami Hoss recently released a singing toothbrush that pairs with augmented reality technology."We gotta come up with brushes that are really fun and educate in a fun way," says Dr. Hoss.The brush plays a song for two minutes, which is the amount of time dentists recommend for brushing teeth. While the song plays, kids can use an app to watch augmented reality characters come to life on their phones.The characters "pop out" of a sticker placed on the bathroom mirror and teach kids how to brush properly. Hoss says this is the first toothbrush to use AR."It's Pixar quality," says Dr. Hoss of the animation. "We spent years developing this to make sure it's beautiful."According to the CDC, around 20% of kindergarteners have some form of tooth decay. Studies show that children brush their teeth 73% longer when listening to music. The toothbrush also helps people know when it's time to buy a new one. If someone uses it to brush twice a day, the battery will die after three months.
