YICHANG, Hubei, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Three Gorges Project has completed trial water storage operations for the year, with the water level in the reservoir exceeding 172 meters.     As of Tuesday, the water level had risen 27.3 m since Sept. 28,when this year's storage plan began, said the developer of the massive water conservancy project, the China Three Gorges Project Corp. (CTGPC) on Friday.     The water-raising measures ended on Tuesday when the water behind the dam reached 172.3 m and the reservoir held more than 19.3 billion cubic meters of water. The reservoir then began to discharge water.     Generally speaking, the trial operation, which is a test of quality, went well. The structure, generators and shipping locks were all in normal condition and the water quality was not affected, said a CTGPC statement.     The water level is expected to reach 175 m in 2009 when the Three Gorges project is completed.     At 156 m, the target level for the second phase, the reservoir could be fully functional in terms of flood control, power generation and navigation control.     Launched in 1993, construction of the gigantic concrete structure of the dam was completed and began to store water in May2006.     Previously, the reservoir's temporary cofferdams held water at a depth of 135 to 139 m.     The Three Gorges Project, with a budget equivalent to 22.5 billion U.S. dollars, is a multi-functional water control system built at the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River.     Its main works are a dam, a five-tier ship lock and 26 hydropower turbo-generators.     The dam will have 14 turbo-generators on the left bank and 12 on the right. Combined, they will produce 84.7 billion kw of electricity annually.     There are plans to add six more turbines by 2012.     As of June, 1.24 million residents had been relocated to make way for the dam construction.

BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki exchanged views over the phone Friday on promoting further development of bilateral relations in 2009 and international and regional issues of common concern.     On the situation in the Gaza Strip, Yang said China is seriously concerned and deeply worried about the grave humanitarian crisis caused by the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.     China has made unremitting efforts to promote adoption by the United Nations Security Council of a relevant resolution on Gaza, Yang said.     He said China welcomes and supports U.N. Security Council Resolution 1860 and urges all the parties concerned to fully honor the resolution, cease fire immediately, ensure smooth operation of humanitarian assistance and promote an early relaxation of the humanitarian crisis taking place in Gaza.     China has always proposed that the issue of Palestine be resolved through political negotiation on the basis of related U.N. resolutions, the "Land for Peace" principle and the Arab Peace Initiative, he added.

BRUSSELS, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the European Union (EU) on Friday vowed to further enhance their partnership and deepen cooperation in various fields.     In a joint declaration issued after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Brussels, the two sides emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership in face of globalization and the current volatile international situation.     The document says that the China-EU relationship has gone beyond the bilateral domain and is increasingly of global strategic significance. "Both sides are of the view that it is imperative to further improve the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership, which reflects the common wishes of the two sides and are in their interests," says the declaration. They would first be transported to Sichuan's provincial capital of Chengdu, about 120 km from Ya'an, and then be flown to Taiwan.     Before their departure, the pandas had their breakfast – carrot and steamed corn buns.     A brief ceremony was held at the Bifeng Gorge Base in Ya'an before the pair's departure.     Zhang Hemin, director of the giant panda protection center, said at the ceremony he hoped the pair would bring happiness to Taiwan compatriots.     The 4-year-old pandas, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, have been living at a breeding base in Ya'an, Sichuan Province, since the May 12 strong earthquake which damaged their former home in Wolong.     Qu Chunmao, the pair's keeper in Ya'an, spoke in tears, "I wish them a happy life in Taiwan."     A Taiwan keeper, who would accompany the pair to the island, said the pandas were in good condition.     "They had a good breakfast to sustain them on the long journey," she said.
