SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the bulk of rainfall has moved out of San Diego County for the week, high winds and surf while persist through the weekend.A large west-northwest swell will bring a high surf advisory to San Diego County through Saturday until 8 p.m., with surf reaching 6 to 10 feet along the county's southern coastline. Surf will subside gradually through the end of the weekend.During that time, however, an increased risk of rip currents will create a hazard along the area's beaches.WEATHER: 10News' weekend forecastHeading into Saturday night, another storm system will bring mostly light to moderate rain Saturday night and the possibility of snow in local mountains.High winds from the west are forecasted for portions of San Diego's mountains and deserts, with a wind advisory will be in effect from 4 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday. Wind gusts could reach 55 mph and isolated gusts could hit 65 mph.Those winds will make driving difficult in the area, especially for high profile vehicles. San Diego (KGTV)- Another section of the bluff has collapsed in Encinitas. This comes almost exactly one year after the deadly collapse that killed three women on the beach.Large mounds of rock sit at the foot of the cliffs on Stonesteps Beach, in Encinitas, after the bluffs gave way early Sunday morning. Lifeguard Captain Larry Giles tells ABC 10News the collapse stretches 40 feet along the beach.The block failure sits just over a mile and a half from Grandview Beach in Encinitas. Julie Davis, her daughter Annie Clave and sister Elizabeth Charles were tragically killed at the site a year ago after the bluffs came crashing down.10News spoke with Davis' husband, Dr. Pat Davis, last week on the anniversary of the collapse. He says more needs to be done to keep Encinitas beach-goers safe."There's very few new signs warning people about these cliffs," says Davis. "There's very little coordination by the lifeguard service to warn people about how dangerous these cliffs are."Lifeguard Captain Larry Giles says no one was hurt in this weekend's collapse. The block failure was caused by natural erosion.Giles says there is a small area on the cliff that is still causing some concern. Lifeguards and the City of Encinitas are monitoring the area.Dr. Pat Davis says that as his family mourns the loss of their loved ones, he can't help but think about beach-goers."I think we're looking at a situation where what happened to my family could easily happen again."Davis has been working with local and state leaders to stabilize the bluffs. He hopes a new bill will help. It offers solutions like sand replenishment. That bill is currently moving through the state Senate. 1685

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Unintentional fentanyl overdose deaths increased by nearly 70 percent in 2019, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner. From January through June of 2019, 69 people died from the overdoses, compared to 41 during the same time period in 2018. The number indicates a 68 percent jump, the report shows. Health officials are unsure if people are unknowingly buying counterfeit pills or powder, or if they are aware the pills are counterfeit. “In the last decade when someone overdosed on fentanyl, it was often when someone was prescribed it, and perhaps put on too many fentanyl patches or altered the patches,” said Chief Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Steven Campman. “I can’t even remember the last time I saw a death from misused prescribed fentanyl.”RELATED STORIESMeth isn't far behind opioids in overdose deathsA drug bust in California yielded 18 pounds of fentanyl — enough for 4 million fatal dosesMysterious pills sold on the street linked to several deaths in San Diego County“Now, in the deaths we see, the fentanyl is illegally obtained as counterfeit oxycodone or alprazolam. And the illicit drug makers don’t have the kind of quality control measures that pharmaceutical companies have either,” Campman added.Until now, San Diego has been behind a national trend of increasing opioid deaths, but that’s changing, Chapman said. “This is how we are seeing the opioid epidemic here, mostly in the rise in fentanyl deaths.” 1847

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A man was shot in the leg Friday morning in downtown San Diego's East Village neighborhood by a man who approached him asking to buy drugs, San Diego police said.The shooting was reported around 4:40 a.m. on 16th Street between K Street and Imperial Avenue, just west of Interstate 5.According to police, a man who looked to be in his 20s approached the victim on 16th Street, and walked off when said the victim replied that he didn’t sell drugs.About 20 minutes later, the same man returned and confronted the victim, pulled out a handgun and shot him in the leg.The victim was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.The gunman was described as a 5-foot-8 black man in his 20s with a heavy build and curly black hair. At the time of the shooting, he wore a blue jacket and gray pants.Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call San Diego Police Department's central division at 619-744-9500. 944
