SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sailor hit by a spinning helicopter blade earlier this week at MCAS Camp Pendleton has died.MCAS Camp Pendleton said the sailor died Saturday morning from injuries sustained after the spinning tail rotor blade of a UH-01Y Venom Marine helicopter struck him.The helicopter was on deck at MCAS Camp Pendleton when the incident occurred just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.RELATED: Sailor critically injured by spinning helicopter blade at MCAS Camp PendletonThe sailor was brought to Scripps La Jolla Medical Facility with critical injuries after the incident.Officials are withholding the sailor's name pending family notification. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The wife of Cal Fire San Diego fire engineer Cory Iverson spoke to 10News about her life following her husband's death while he battled the Thomas Fire last year.Cory Iverson died December 14th battling the Thomas Fire in Ventura County.  The 32-year-old fire apparatus engineer died after he getting caught in a swarm of spot fires in the Fillmore area.He leaves behind his wife Ashley, their 3 year old daughter Evie, and baby Taylor, due in May.Ashley Iverson described her life following her husband's death as the "most horrible and wonderful and terrible and amazing" experience she's ever endured."It's ceaseless," Iverson said of the outpouring of support following her husband's death. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Humane Society warned pet owners this week to be safe with their animals while exercising after a dog collapsed in hot weather. A dog named Joey was half a mile down the Three Sisters Falls trail in Descanso Saturday when he started panting heavily, a sign of heatstroke. “Dogs are lower to the ground, absorbing heat from above and below,” according to the SDHS. Their paws are also sensitive to hot dirt or pavement, experts say. RELATED: Check 10News Pinpoint WeatherPets should not be exercised heavily in temperatures above 70 degrees, according to the SDHS. Temperatures in Descanso reached a high of 86 Saturday, according to 10News meteorologist Megan Parry.The SDHS Emergency Response Team took Joey to Animal Urgent Care in Escondido, where he was treated for heat exhaustion and separating pads. Joey recovered and returned home with his owner. Three Sisters Falls trail in East County is an arduous hike for humans which can be dangerous during summer. In central San Diego, warning signs reminding owners not to hike with dogs in hot weather are posted at the popular Cowles Mountain trail. 1144

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The threat of coronavirus still is looming and combined with a new problem of bad air quality from west coast wildfires, means there are now more reasons to wear masks, but not all masks will protect against both.The CDC currently recommends the public wear masks with two or more layers over their nose and mouth to stop the spread of COVID-19. In regards to the particulate matter in the air because of wildfire smoke, the cloth coverings are not enough protection.“If you’re wearing a cloth mask for COVID, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re protected from those microscopic smoke particles that can still be breathed in,” said Robert Reider, Interim Director of the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, or SDAPCD.Reider said the air in Southern California has been some of the worst in the world through the past week. This is because of the multiple wildfires burning in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. The winds are pulling the smoke south and it’s settling in places like San Diego, creating hazy and unsafe conditions. Reider said the winds are expected to shift around Friday, meaning the haze should clear after that.In the meantime, Sharp Rees-Stealy physician Jyotu Sandhu said N95 masks are the best protection against wildfire smoke. He added that individuals should assess their own health when determining how seriously they need to take the smoke. People with lung or breathing issues like asthma and COPD should be more aware of the smoke.The SDAPCD issued a Wildfire Smoke Advisory because of the impacts. The air quality will range between "moderate" and "unhealthy for sensitive groups" through Thursday. Sandhu said he’s had patients asking if it’s safe to exercise in the smoke. He said if a person is healthy, they can go outside but should consider spending less time outdoors than usual. For example, if a healthy person runs outside for an hour a day, it might be smart to cut that time in half and only run for half an hour in the smoke. He said if possible, exercising indoors is safer than outside while the smoke persists. 2098
