Robert Grays was having the game of his life on Saturday as his Midwestern State University squad was beating Texas A&M-Kingsville 35-13. The 19-year-old sophomore had matched a career-high with seven tackles, with his team about to improve to 2-0 on the season. Saturday ended up being Grays' final game.  With 3:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, Grays went in for a tackle, severely injuring his neck. After being transported to Houston for treatment, Grays died on Tuesday from the injury. Grays was the squad's starting cornerback, and also played on special teams. Grays was a graduate of Fort Bend L.V. Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas."We are saddened by the loss of Robert Grays, one of our own. This is not an easy time for anyone associated with the football program," MSU coach Bill Maskill said. "He was a tremendous individual. I really believe he might have been the most popular man on our team."He always had a smile on his face. I never saw him have a bad day. He was an uplifting spirit for all of us. He was an exciting, fun loving guy. He's going to be sorely missed. Somehow, someway we'll find a way to fight through it. Robert would want us to forge ahead."Saturday marked a deadly day in college football. Fellow college football player Clayton Geib died on Sunday, one day after being hospitalized for severe cramping and hyperventilating following a game. CBS Sports reported that Grays' death was the fifth involving a college football player this year. Midwestern State competes at the NCAA Division II level.  1650

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California police say a man brandished what they later learned was a fake gun during a standoff that resulted in the evacuation of a hotel. The Sacramento Bee reported guests were evacuated from a Comfort Inn in Red Bluff early Saturday during a standoff between police and a domestic violence suspect. The Red Bluff Police Department said in a release that 21-year-old Christian Sandoval-Perez of Corning faces multiple charges including child abuse and domestic violence. Officers went to the hotel’s second floor and encountered Sandoval-Perez with a gun. He held off police for more than 75 minutes. 637

SACRAMENTO (AP) — California is seeking to join the Justice Department in its antitrust lawsuit against Google parent Alphabet Inc. The Justice Department sued Google in October, saying it has abused its dominance in online search and advertising. The case, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., alleges that Google uses billions of dollars collected from advertisers to pay phone manufacturers to ensure Google is the default search engine on browsers. Eleven states, all with Republican attorneys general, joined the federal government in the lawsuit at the time. California is the first Democratic state announcing its intent to join the Justice Department’s case. 681

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) — Building on his recently announced initiative to move California away from gas-powered vehicles, Gov. Gavin Newsom says California will dedicate 30% of its land to conservation by 2030.Newsom said Wednesday that under an executive order, the state will direct agencies to store carbon in the state's natural and working lands and remove it from the atmosphere to preserve more than 30% of the state's land and coastal waters by 2030.The move is also meant to combat species and ecosystem loss, according to the governor's order."Once again, California is taking on the mantle of global climate leadership and advancing bold strategies to fight climate change," a statement from Newsom read. "The science is clear that, in our existential fight against climate change, we must build on our historic efforts in energy and emissions and focus on our lands as well. California’s beautiful natural and working lands are an important tool to help slow and avert catastrophic climate change, and today’s executive order provides important new tools to take on this existential threat."To hit climate goals, agencies will be directed to practice:Healthy soils management, including planting cover crops, hedgerows, and compost applications,Wetlands restoration to protect coastal areas,Active forest management to reduce risk and restore forest health,Boost green infrastructure in urban areas like trees and parksLast month, Newsom announced California will phase out all gasoline-powered cars by 2035 in an effort to reduce the state's emissions. The executive order will require all new car and passenger trucks sold in the state to be zero-emission vehicles, but it will not make it illegal for Californians to own gas-powered vehicles or resell them as used cars. 1796

Ru-El Sailor is still not completely a free man, even after he was released from prison last week, moments after his 2003 murder conviction was vacated in Cuyahoga County, Ohio court.Sailor now ordered to wear an ankle monitor for 120 days, due to an Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction regulation that requires those released from a maximum security prison to be monitored and not leave the state. The ankle monitor requirement was imposed, even though Sailor spent 15 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit.Sailor believes a change in state law is needed to prevent this from happening to others exonerated here in Ohio."Desperately needs to be changed, desperately needs to be changed," said Sailor."If I have to be the one that has to bite the bullet first and open the door for others, then I don't mind biting the bullet.""I'll wear this ankle monitor for four months or a year if I have to, if it's going to make change for other people behind me to come and not have to go through the same things I went through," he said.Black on Black Crime Incorporated, which also fought for Sailor's release, along with the Ohio Innocence Project, agrees a change in ankle monitor requirements are needed in cases of wrongful conviction.Black on Black Crime Inc. President Al Porter Jr. said his organization will ask for a change in state law."The state law definitely does have to be changed," said Porter."We will stand also to make sure that the next person doesn't have to go through this, especially once they've been freed, and proven innocent beyond a shadow of doubt."Sailor's legal team said it is working to resolve the ankle monitor situation.Meanwhile, Sailor told News 5 the ankle monitor isn't stopping him from working on starting his own business.Sailor said he would like to create a service that would shuttle family members who want to visit loved in prison across the state. 1927
