The Coca-Cola Co. says it’s laying off 2,200 workers, or 17% of its global workforce, as part of a larger restructuring aimed at paring down its brands. The company said around 1,200 of the layoffs will occur in the U.S., with around 500 of those eliminated in Atlanta, where the company is based. These layoffs come after the beverage company offered buyouts to about 4,000 employees in August. At the time, the company said their operating model had 17 business units, and they would consolidate that to just nine. The voluntary and involuntary separations, and severance packages are expected to cost the company between 0 million to 0 million, according to CNN.Coke employed 86,200 people worldwide at the end of 2019.The coronavirus pandemic has hammered Coke’s business, forcing the company to accelerate a restructuring that was already underway.Coke is reducing its brands by half, to 200, so it can focus on bigger sellers like Minute Maid juices and energy drinks. Earlier this year, they announced ZICO coconut water, Tab, Odwalla juices, and some regional sodas will be discontinued. 1106

The FBI is warning financial institutions that their ATMs could be targeted in a hacking attempt. The threat was reported Sunday by Krebs On Security, a popular cybersecurity blog run by the journalist Brian Krebs.Krebs reported that the scheme is known as an "ATM cash-out," which means the attackers can hack a bank or payment card processor and use stolen information to withdraw large sums of money at ATMs worldwide. His report cited a confidential alert the FBI shared with banks last Friday. The FBI did not comment specifically on this potential attack. In a statement to CNN, a spokeswoman said that "in furtherance of public-private partnerships, the FBI routinely advises private industry of various cyber threat indicators observed during the course of our investigations.""This data is provided in order to help systems administrators guard against the actions of persistent cyber criminals," the spokeswoman said.CNN reached out to two major banks, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase, both of which declined to comment.Krebs has reported on similar "unlimited operations" before, including a scheme in which more than million was stolen from a Virginia bank in 2016 and 2017.The alert, called a private industry notification, was sent to a narrow group of cybersecurity professionals and system administrators at financial firms that had assets at risk, according to a federal law enforcement official.Though the FBI at times makes PSAs for significant cybersecurity threats, like when they told the public in May to reboot certain internet routers after a malware attack, no wider notification was made about the ATM scheme. 1659
The Florida Panthers have hired Brett Peterson as an assistant general manager, making him the first Black executive to hold that position in the NHL. "I'm very excited for this opportunity with the Panthers and with Bill's growing front office team," said Peterson in a press release. "It's a special day for myself and my family and I can't wait to get to work."Peterson's hiring comes days after the nearby Miami Marlins hired Kim Ng as the first female GM in Major League Baseball. The NHL has been working to increase minority participation in front offices and on coaching staffs. Peterson has a background as a player agent just like GM Bill Zito and fellow assistant Paul Krepelka. The 39-year-old was previously vice president of hockey for Wasserman Media Group and has been an NHLPA certified agent since 2009.Peterson also played professional hockey and made it up as far as the American Hockey League level. The FBI says a British socialite who was accused by many women of helping procure underage sex partners for Jeffrey Epstein has been arrested in Bradford, New Hampshire. The FBI said Thursday that Ghislaine Maxwell was taken into custody at around 8:30 a.m. on charges related to the Epstein scandal.Epstein killed himself in a federal detention center in New York last summer while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.Maxwell was accused by many women of recruiting them to give Epstein massages, during which they were pressured into sex. She's been charged with four counts relating to sex trafficking and two counts of perjury.During a press conference Thursday, Acting Attorney for the Southern District of New York Audrey Strauss thanked the victims who came forward to authorities. She said that without their help, they would not be able to charge Maxwell.Strauss also urged Prince Andrew to speak with investigators and cooperate with the ongoing investigations into Epstein and Maxwell. The British royal was known to be friendly with Epstein during the time abuse occurred and has described their relationship as a friendship.
