LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Scientists are using an autonomous underwater vehicle to help get purified wastewater to your faucets.  The remote-controlled sub operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography helps measure how the purified water mixes with the Lake Jennings reservoir water.It’s one of the state-required steps water officials need to take before purified wastewater from the Padre Dam Water District’s Advanced Water Purification System is introduced to homes through Helix Water District’s Lake Jennings and water treatment facility.“There’s that factor that it’s coming from a waste facility originally.  So, what happens if there’s some sort of failure that didn’t get caught? Well, now there’s a buffer. There’s a buffer. It will sit in the reservoir,” said Helix’s Director of Water Quality Brian Olney.If all goes as planned, Padre Dam will need to expand its Advanced Water Purification System and build a pipeline to deliver that water to Lake Jennings.  Olney said that could happen by 2023. 1045

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego County Fair isn’t happening in 2020, but there are still ways to get your fair fix. There are virtual activities hosted through the fair, and one food vendor is still bringing fair food to the community. Chicken Charlie’s is known for deep-fried everything, from Oreos to meat, and this year, the new addition is deep fried taffy. While the fair won’t be happening, Charlie Boughosian has brought his trailer to the Grossmont Center in La Mesa to bring fried food to the community. Friday would have been the first day of the fair, so Charlie made it the first day of shop in the parking lot. “I’m feeling the same kind of pressure I feel on opening day of the fair,” he said Friday. Be prepared for a wait; the first day was a hit and the crowds showed up. He said they’ll start with hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. then expand if possible. Charlie said he’s still looking to hire about 20 employees. “I think food is love and I love feeding people and there’s nothing better than fried chicken. (KGTV) -- A man was taken to the hospital after a shed in La Mesa collapsed on top of him.According to authorities, the incident happened on the 9100 block of Johnson Drive around 2 p.m.A resident in the area told 10News his neighbor hired a worker to take down the shed. Shortly after the project began, the shed collapsed.The worker was taken to the hospital in unknown condition. 406

LAS VEGAS — Sheriff Joe Lombardo said during a press conference on Friday morning that it is still unknown why Stephen Paddock opened fire on concert-goers on the night of Oct. 1, 2017.58 people died and hundreds of people were injured during the worst mass shooting in modern history during a country music festival in Las Vegas. CLICK HERE TO READ THE FINAL REPORTLombardo stressed during the press conference that the focus of the final report is the criminal investigation and the report does not focus on the actions or lack of action of any individuals that night.Lombardo also said that Paddock was an "unremarkable man" and that there were no warning signs according to Paddock's family and doctor. The sheriff also told the press that Paddock lost a lot of money in the past year and that could have been part of the motive for what he did. The sheriff also admitted that although the shooting did not meet the federal definition of terrorism, he personally considers it an act of terrorism. Lombardo also said that there is no evidence of other gunmen and they do not expect to arrest anyone else.In addition, the sheriff admitted that the missing hard drive has not been located and that it was common practice for Paddock to remove and hide hard drives.When asked if something like this could happen again, the sheriff admitted that it could. He also talked about what they have done since the mass shooting to prevent such an event. The sheriff stressed that Las Vegas is a "safe" community.Other things discussed in the press conference included the communication system. Sheriff Lombardo described the system as "sound and robust" despite criticism from some. The final report will be released this morning. LAS VEGAS, Nevada — In the era of the "Me Too" movement and against a backdrop of sexual misconduct in the school district, a YouTube video has some wondering whether a candidate for the Board of Trustees is sending the wrong message on social media. Her video is called "How to Be Sexy."It's been viewed more than a million times, but now it's getting serious scrutiny as the self-described non-traditional candidate is running for school board trustee. Watch the full interview with Danielle Ford in the video player at the end of this story."I initially searched for the videos because I started hearing other employees discussing it and saying they were kind of concerned," said Elena Rodriguez, CCSD Student Services Division. Elena Rodriguez has worked for the district for decades. She's an outspoken advocate for change and accountability and regularly attends and speaks at school board meetings."As difficult as it is for women to climb the ladder of administration and so forth, and the issues that we've had in the past with employees being accused of sexual harassment and discrimination and so forth, I think it sends the wrong message," Rodriguez said.Danielle Ford isn't shying away from her videos, but she does want to explain them. "As far as that particular video and the messaging of sexiness, I very much believe in empowering women to love their bodies and to be proud of who they are."Danielle dropped out of high school when she became pregnant at age 17 and got her G.E.D. She says this video and others posted on her Young Moms Club website are designed to reach out to other teen moms who face the same stigma and challenges she did when she was a CCSD student.Getting that message out is a serious effort for Ford. Drawing from her own personal experience she takes on the meaning of teen motherhood in the TedX talk from 2013."If we can offer support and encouragement to these girls rather than criticism and judgment, then we can all positively affect the lives of over 10 million people."Drawing from her marketing experience, Danielle says she has to be creative to ensure teen moms get her message. "And although I wouldn't use that same tagline and picture if I'm talking to different people, it worked!  Because that video itself has over a million views.  And it brought you here," Ford added.Danielle's message to feel confident and powerful at any age as a woman is strong. But the context of that video ("How to Be Sexy") is how to get and keep a man. Some are questioning if that's a good message to send to young girls. According to Ford, "Girls do want that! We all do! We all want a partner."Though she posted these videos years before knowing she'd run for public office, she stands behind them all. Including a video entitled "Why I Let My 10-Year-Old Daughter Date." But as you'll hear in the video below, that "date" was really just a family outing to Chuck E. Cheese.Ford said, "I feel like it's a really good thing to teach her now what a date is and how to be treated by boys."She also has a video on "How to Get a Boyfriend... It's Seriously Just Like Shopping.""When you watch the videos, the common theme is that we need to empower kids instead of criticizing them for having thoughts or whatever it is," Ford added.But Rodriguez says there's a better way to empower young women. "For example, towards education--higher education--technical schools. There are many other ways to empower women versus just talking about how you can be sexy."Long-time Trustee Carolyn Edwards, who's terming out of the spot Ford is running for, says trustees must live up to a higher standard and that includes social media.Regarding her "How to Be Sexy" video, Danielle told us, "I wouldn't make that video--based on what I've heard--again, but I'm also not going to take it down."In fact, she's got a link to her Young Moms Club videos on her candidate website.
