LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The family of an 11-year-old boy who was killed in the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka held a celebration of life ceremony in Lakeside Wednesday night. They gathered on a trail in Oak Oasis County Park to remember Kieran Shafritz de Zoysa, on what would have been his 12th birthday.About a mile down the trail, they unveiled a new bench with a plaque in his memory, telling future hikers to “Be like Kieran.”“Kieran’s mindset was always about helping others,” said Alex Arrow, his father who lives in Lakeside.“He was the greatest ray of light that my life has ever seen,” said Dhulsini de Zoysa, Kieran’s mother. Both parents described him as curious, intelligent and empathetic.“He was just a sponge. He took in everything regardless of the topic,” said his mother.Arrow said his son had dreams of becoming a neuroscientist, with the goal of finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. “I also grieve for what the world lost,” said Arrow. “That piece of shrapnel from the suicide bomber struck down a future champion against the unknowns of the brain.”In total, 259 people were killed in a series of coordinated bombings on April 21 in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. 1202

LA MESA (KGTV)— Meteorologists are predicting a wet Christmas week in San Diego. 10News revisited residents at the San Diego RV Resort in La Mesa that dealt with a Thanksgiving flood to see if they are prepared for the next set of thunderstorms. Taylor Jaime showed 10News around the RV resort. "She [My mother] was cooking a turkey at my sister's house for Thanksgiving," Jaime remembered. She said she never got to enjoy that turkey after her home got washed away. Jaime and her family live at the San Diego RV Resort full-time. On Thanksgiving day, heavy rains inundated the ravine that runs parallel to the resort. "So the water started coming over this [the wall]," Jaime motioned. The retaining wall collapsed and the water came up waist-high, destroying two of her cars, their 40-foot trailer and everything inside. Unfortunately, their the new RV was insured at the time of the storm. "The water was so nasty. There was crab, there was fish in the trailer," Jaime remembered. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the RV resort is right in the middle of a heavy flood zone. The resort staff told 10News they just finished rebuilding the wall Saturday. In the last month, Jaime said she saw Caltrans and California Conservation Corps workers clean up some of the debris, but she fears another collapse. "The water won't be able to go through. It'll get stuck down there, like last time," pointing at the west end of the resort lot. With heavy rains forecasted during Christmas week, some of Jaime's neighbors have already lined sandbags along their lots. Lucky for Jaime and her family, they have a spare trailer, albeit an older and smaller one. They parked it away from the ravine and closer to the entrance gate. Six people and several small animals are now crammed inside the trailer. They didn't skimp on holiday decorations, though."We are still in the spirit," Jaime said. "It's not going to bring us down. We are still a family. We still have each other. And that's what matters the most."10News reached out to San Diego RV Resort's parent company for comment to see if they are making other preparations ahead of the storm. They did not respond to our inquiries. 2209

Law enforcement officials in Oregon say there is no evidence that anti-fascists or right-wring groups were the cause of a series of devastating wildfires throughout the state.Oregon is one of about a dozen states in the western U.S. that are currently battling historic wildfires, which have spread due to heatwaves combined with dry and humid conditions. But as the fires spread in Oregon, so have conspiracy theories linking their origin. According to USA Today, several Facebook posts have gone viral in recent days that claim the fires were started in connection with ongoing civil unrest in Portland. One of those posts included a screenshot of what appeared to be a status update by the Medford Police Department. That post claimed that five members of the "Proud Boys" — a right-wing group known for inciting violence at protests — had been arrested for arson due to anonymous tips. 895

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Students in a UC San Diego computer science course are still trying to understand why someone put a racial slur in their study guide dozens of times. The CSE 134B midterm study guide was a collaborative effort among the students. Only those in the class had access to it and could edit it anonymously. The night before the exam, students like Raymond Arevalo were shocked to see the n-word in it 85 times."I got on the study guide and saw the instance of the n-word, and then I noticed another instance," said Arevalo. "I was really shocked and kind of mad because this wasn't the first time this has happened before in other classes I've been."Arevalo says he has experienced a negative culture in the computer science program at the school. He says far too often minorities and women are targeted in the male-dominated field. He shared images of the defaced midterm online, hoping to raise awareness of the problems he believes exist."People continue to do these things knowing that they won't get in trouble, and it's like a small joke to them, if the person were to get in trouble that would be nice," said Arevalo. The story was first reported in The Triton, an independent, student-run news source. There they posted the version of the study guide with racial slurs."We're here to learn and get educated, not make others feel ashamed or threatened for just being them," said Olivia Thomsen, a UCSD student.10News called and emailed the class professor for comment but did not hear back.10News also reached out to university officials, they did not comment and referred us to their Principles of Community. 1641
