From the middle of the Obama administration to the midpoint of the Trump presidency, household income grew the most in tech and entertainment centers like Austin, Texas; Nashville, Tennessee; and large chunks of the West Coast.Congressional districts that attract highly educated workers around areas like Denver and Charlotte, North Carolina, were among the communities that saw mean household income rise the most from 2013 to 2018, according to new figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.Other congressional districts that had the highest household income growth were in or around Houston; Pittsburgh; Provo, Utah; parts of South Florida and the wealthy retirement haven of Sarasota, Florida. Most of the income growth in these areas came from wages, said Mark Vitner, a senior economist at Wells Fargo Securities.“Metro areas tied to technology have tended to perform best, although global gateways and energy markets had their moment in the sun earlier in the decade,” Vitner said.Household income grew more in Democratic-leaning districts than Republican ones, according to an Associated Press analysis of the data by congressional districts. Household income grew by an average of more than ,000 in Democratic-leaning congressional districts, compared to more than ,000 in Republican-leaning districts. What impact that has going into the 2020 elections remains to be seen, experts said.“Surely new evidence of income level rises in coastal and more highly educated districts relative to others plays to the Democrats’ strength,” said William Frey, a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution. “But it also makes clear they need to redouble their efforts to court non-college voters in less prosperous districts in the run-up to the 2020 election.”The greater income growth in Democratic-leaning districts likely had to do with the fact that they’re in cities where incomes tend to be higher, Vitner said.“Republican districts tend to be more rural and have lower wages,” he said.In some areas, the growth in household income was enormous. In House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s district, located in San Francisco, the epicenter of the last decade’s tech boom, household income jumped by a third from almost 0,500 to more than 0,000.In other areas, income growth was significantly more modest. In the district that covers Huntington, West Virginia, average household income only went up 5% to about ,500. The area represented by Republican Rep. Carol Miller has been gripped by the struggles of the coal industry and is losing population. Some industrial areas also have struggled to adjust to changing circumstances.“The difficulty that some manufacturing areas have been facing is that they have not been able to re-position their economies quick enough to stem the outflow of younger workers,” Vitner said.__Follow Mike Schneider on Twitter at 2883

For the second time in three years, Clemson is on top of the college football world, crushing Alabama in unexpected fashion by a 44-16 margin on Monday evening. With Alabama entering Monday's title game as the prohibitive favorite, the two squads competed as the clear top two squads in college football after impressive semifinal victories. Clemson, the No. 2-seed in the Playoff, easily defeated previously unbeaten Notre Dame 30-3 in last month's Cotton Bowl. Alabama easily beat Oklahoma 45-34 in last month's Orange Bowl. Although Alabama has claimed five national titles in the last decade, it has yet to win back-to-back championships. Clemson picks up its third title in program history. Clemson also became the first ever undefeated College Football Playoff champion, and the first modern college football team to finish the season 15-0.2019 marked the fifth College Football Playoff. Alabama has made the finals of the last four playoffs. Clemson has played in three College Football Playoff finals, squaring off against Bama all three times. Alabama held a 16-14 lead early in the second quarter. From there, Clemson dominated and shutout Alabama's high-powered offense the rest of the game. Freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence of Clemson outdueled his 'Bama counterpart Tua Tagovailoa by completing three touchdown passes and not getting picked off. Clemson's ability to convert on third down was a key difference, going 10-for-15, whereas Alabama went 4-for-13. 1489

Glenn Close may have snagged the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama movie and Christian Bale won for best actor in a comedy. But when it came to stealing the show, it was all about a mysterious brunette who you have almost certainly never heard of.Wearing a deep blue evening dress, the initially unidentified woman managed to make herself known to the paparazzi at Sunday's award ceremony by photobombing almost every red carpet shot -- appearing behind just about everyone from Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis to Idris Elba and Richard Madden. She also stole the spotlight from the likes of Jim Carrey, Dakota Fanning and Camilla Belle.Later revealed as an LA-based model, Kelleth Cuthbert pulled off the brazen publicity stunt by continuously posing with a tray of bottles of Fiji Water intended for the thirsty guests. And it was not just a case of standing demurely in the background. Instead Cuthbert, who originally hails from Toronto, made a point of staring into the camera and grabbing the global limelight. At the start of the night, she posted a picture of herself on Instagram, captioning it: "Not the worst way to spend a Sunday... #goldenglobesfijigirl #fijiwatergirl"Pictures of the model quickly went viral, with a host of memes and even a spoof Twitter account appearing within hours.Fiji Water, which sponsored the award ceremony, later tweeted: "We're so glad everyone is talking about our water!"*senses ominous presence*"She's right behind us, isn't she? #FIJIwatergirl" 1509
