The announcement was made on Instagram and the closures take effect Sunday, March 15. “On behalf of our staff and community and in the interest of keeping our city safe, we are temporarily suspending our operations,” Malarkey said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California’s superintendent of schools announced a new plan to study the role and impact of police on school campuses.During a Wednesday morning virtual press conference, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said he wants to speed up research in examining how police at schools affect students.“We need to set clear standards that police officer should never be dean of students or disciplinarian for student behavior,” Thurmond said.Schools may still need police on campus to respond to situations such as active shooters or bomb threats, Thurmond said, but he was clear that officers should never treat students like criminals.In the wake of protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and as people across the U.S. call for systemic change in the role police play in all of our lives, Thurmond is organizing a task force to study police presence at schools.“We should have more restorative justice programs, focus on de-escalation, programs that focus on intervention that can be done by those who have the ability to use peacemaking skills to reduce violence,” Thurmond said.San Diego County is no stranger to police-related controversy on local school campuses.In 2016, a fight at Lincoln High School ended with school police using Tasers and pepper spray on students. One officer and four students were hospitalized, and two students were arrested.In 2018, a campus police officer slammed a student at Helix High School onto the ground. That student later filed a lawsuit over the incident.Now, a Change.org petition is calling for the San Diego Unified School District to close its district police department, saying, “Policing schools creates a toxic school climate that attenuates the school-to-prison pipeline and is not necessary to cultivating school safety.”As of Wednesday, the petition has just over 1,800 signatures.Federal data shows a slightly disproportionate amount of arrests of minority students within San Diego Unified School District. Data shows 66 percent of arrests are of Black or Hispanic students, even though they only make up 56 percent of the school population.Thurmond said he wants to look into that issue specifically.“To make sure that any police officer who is on campus is someone who wants to be on campus, who has chosen to be there, not just been assigned. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Baseball is back, and that could mean potentially good news for businesses near Petco Park in downtown San Diego.On Tuesday, Major League Baseball announced a 60-game season will begin on July 23 and 24. Players are expected to return for training camps on July 1.While the MLB announcement did not specify the role of fans, multiple reports suggest the season will begin in empty ballparks with no fans in attendance.To reduce travel, the schedule will include 10 games for each team against its divisional opponents, along with 20 games against the opposite leagues corresponding geographical division.For the San Diego Padres, that will mean 10 games each against the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Colorado Rockies. Overall, California ranked 21st on the list of best and worst states for military retirees. The Golden State ranked 9th for quality of life, 3rd for number of VA health facilities per number of veterans and 5th for number of VA benefits-administration facilities per number of veterans. Dragging California down to the 21st spot however, is the cost of living. The state ranked 51st for housing affordability and 49th for percent of veteran-owned businesses. California also ranked 48th for its percentage of homeless veterans and 12th for veteran job opportunities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Council leaders have approved a draft agreement to sell the Mission Valley stadium site to San Diego State University.Leaders unanimously approved an agreement to move forward with a Purchase and Sale Agreement (PSA) between the city and SDSU to sell the land to the university for .2 million.The agreement paves the way for the city to meet for two hearings to finalize the PSA on June 9 and June 23. After the hearings, a 30-day referendum period is legally required before Mayor Kevin Faulconer can sign the PSA and escrow can be initiated. SDSU expects to take ownership of the property in late July 2020, according to the city."Both parties wanted to get this done right, and the time and thoughtfulness put into this agreement have created a final product San Diegans can be proud of," Mayor Faulconer said. "This agreement is fair and equitable, and I want to thank Council President Gomez, City Attorney Elliott and SDSU for their commitment."The agreement is the product of 18 months of negotiating following the passage of Measure G in November 2018. The voter-approved measure calls for the expansion of SDSU, a new stadium, 80 acres of park and open space, and 4,600 market-rate and affordable housing units."We have reached a pivotal milestone moment. SDSU Mission Valley will be a true revitalization of public land in all aspects of the plan," SDSU President Adela de la Torre said.
