DENVER, Colo. – Powerful images emerged from downtown Denver on Saturday. Hundreds of people protesting police brutality laid face down at the Colorado state capitol to honor George Floyd, the Minneapolis man who died in police custody last Monday. The unique demonstration mirrored the position Floyd was in during his final moments, face down against pavement.A viral video of the 46-year-old’s arrest shows a police officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he gasped for air and said “I can’t breathe” before he lost consciousness. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital shortly after. The officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck, Derek Chauvin, was arrested and charged with the man’s murder on Friday. Chauvin and three other officers have also been fired from the Minneapolis Police Department for their role in Floyd’s death, but many say it’s not enough and they want to see the other officers face charges as well.Saturday's protest in Denver was one of many across the country demanding justice for Floyd. It began peacefully but turned tense during the evening hours. There were several small fires and instances of fireworks. CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A new report shows elder adult abuse increased significantly in the past 15 years.Centers for Disease Control and Precention (CDC) released the report showing a 75 percent increase in non-fatal assaults against men 60 and older, and a 35 percent increase against women 60 and older between 2002 and 2016.Dr. Jo Stecher, assistant director of the undergraduate nursing program at from Florida Gulf Coast University, says families should look for sure signs that can point to whether loved ones are getting abused.“They could pull back, they could guard themselves physically when certain people walk in the room,” Stecher said. “Fingerprints on the older adults upper arms where somebody has held onto them.”Stecher also points out that seniors with cognitive impairment could see situations differently and skew their reality.“What might be perceived as caring for them physically, might be abuse in their minds,” she said.She added that neglect is the most common form of abuse among persons 60 years and older.Dana Overton fears his mother is not getting the proper care at the hospital she’s currently staying. Overton claims hospital staff neglected his mother leading to bed sores and weakness in her legs.“They haven’t moved her. They’ve let her body just lay there largely for 30 days,” Overton said.He claims he filed a police report and a complaint with the Department of Children and Families.Overton says the biggest concern is his mother’s safety.“I blame myself that I brought her here. Every year, a motorcycle gang rides through the serene mountains of southern Utah. However, it’s not your typical pack of motorcyclists. It’s a group of dentists from all over the world, riding to raise money.Steven Anderson is the co-founder of Smiles for Life, a charity that’s raised nearly million, thanks to motorcycle rides like this one in Utah.“All the proceeds from this ride go to fund a dental humanitarian initiative that we do in several third-world countries,” Anderson says.These fundraisers help families and children across the globe who have little to no access to dental care.“We’ve trained people from around the world to do dentistry that haven’t been to dental school, and they now have a way to earn a living for their families,” says Roy Hammond, who has been a dentist for more than 30 years.Hammond started Miles for Life almost 20 years ago. “It changed my life, my outlook, on the world that we live in and the hardships of the people and lack of access to the comforts of life we have,” Hammond says.Dentist Ron Massie came from Missouri to ride with the other dentists and their families. He says he rides to get the word out about the lack of dental care around the world.Just like the perspective they get from riding on the open road, the motorcyclists learned there is more to life than what money can buy. They all agree that happiness doesn’t come from stuff.“It’s about giving back, and that’s so true of life, Massie says. “It’s the quality of the people and the fact that everybody is willing to give more than they get.” 1576
