BATAVIA, Ohio -- Some of Robin Hornberger's best students at West Clermont High School have two choices when it comes to college, and neither is ideal: Go into debt to afford the next phase of their education or abandon it altogether. "Our dream is that they can do what they want to do, that they can look at all the professions possible and pick their profession," she said. "But for some kids, it's just too expensive. … They would be having more debt per month than they would be making per month just starting a job."She wants to help them find a third option: Go to college with enough assistance -- no repayment required -- to make it manageable. That's why she's training every week and paying registration fees out of her own pocket to run in one marathon for each month of the next three years. She's already got two under her belt.Hornberger's marathons are a fundraiser and a way for her to draw attention to the difficult situation of economically disadvantaged students who want to better themselves through higher learning.Two months into 2018, she's raised ,000. By the end of 2021, she hopes it will be 0,000 -- enough to send one West Clermont graduate to college with an ,000 scholarship in hand for the next six years."One kid at a time is slow, but if you look into the future, 20 years down the line, that's a whole classroom of kids that have parents who have gone to college," she said. BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- A U.S. judge says the IRS can't keep withholding coronavirus relief payments from incarcerated people, potentially clearing the way for at least 80,000 checks totaling more than 0 million to be sent to people behind bars in the United States.The ruling gives the IRS until Oct. 24 to reconsider the payments for those who were denied or had their money intercepted solely because of their incarceration.But for incarcerated people who didn't file a tax return in 2018 or 2019, another deadline is looming -- they have until Oct. 15 to apply for the checks.The IRS and Treasury Department have not yet decided whether to pursue an appeal. 669

BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. -- The Benham family of northwest Georgia has made history by breaking down barriers, which helped open up new opportunities for the African-American community.This always bring back good memories for me up here. We used to call it the beach,” Robert Benham said of George Washington Carver Park in Bartow County, Georgia. “It was a place where people of color could feel free.”Free, however, during a time of segregation. Robert Benham’s father was the superintendent at George Washington Carver Park, Georgia’s first state park for African Americans.“It’s where my mom and dad were in business and they were people who really believed in the American dream,” Benham said.Benham said he learned valuable life lessons while water skiing the section of Lake Allatoona in Acworth, Georgia.“Being the smallest person, I was always atop of the pyramid,” he said. “The lesson I learned then was that sometimes you can do things perfectly and still fail at it.”Benham says those experiences helped him become the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court of Georgia.There was one incident, however, that impacted his life more than others: when he was denied using the front door at the park’s main office.“My dad stepped up and said, ‘this is my son, he can go in anybody’s front door and if you ever step in his way that will be the last step you make,’” Benham said.That decision would cost Benham’s father his job, but would prove to be a turning point in both of their lives.“He said, ‘there’s some things you have to do be a man,’” Benham said of his father. “’And if you can’t stand up for your children, what can you stand up for?’”While Benham describes the waters at George Washington Carver Park as almost spiritual. He says they also had a huge impact physically. During his the Benham family’s time there, this section of the lake was the only lake in northwest Georgia where African Americans were allowed to swim.“For some people this was the first time they had an opportunity to swim because they couldn’t swim in the various facilities in town,” Benham said.In an area where Confederate flags still fly today, George Washington Carver Park is now open to everyone while Benham is now retired as a judge.Looking back on the past, he believes the recreation area has helped with the future of race relations.“If they work on the things that they have in common than the things that separate them will be less significant,” Benham said. 2483

BONSALL, Calif. (KGTV) - A Marine Corps helicopter made a “precautionary” landing near the I-15 freeway and Highway 76 near Bonsall Monday afternoon. A spokesperson for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing said the crew of the CH-53E Super Stallion noticed an indicator light in the cockpit signaling a generator had failed. Around 3:30 p.m. the helicopter landed safely in a field on the west side of I-15, north of highway 76. No one was injured, according to a MAW spokesperson. The aircraft remained in the field through the evening and was scheduled to return to MCAS Miramar on Tuesday. 592
