The Associated Press has obtained text messages that a U.S. Census Bureau supervisor in Alabama sent to workers that told them how to fake counts of households by entering misleading data.According to the AP's report, texts from the supervisor in October laid out how census takers should fake data to mark a household as only having one resident, even if census takers were unsure of how many people lived in the home.The supervisor's text instructed census takers to mark a household as only being occupied by a single person if they made two failed attempts to interview the residents and two failed attempts to reach landlords or neighbors."You are to clear the case indicating occupied by 1," said the text from the census supervisor in Dothan, Alabama.A census worker from Florida who traveled to Alabama to help with areas lagging behind on the county provided the texts to the AP on condition of anonymity to protect her privacy.The Census Bureau says it's investigating and hasn't identified any data irregularities.The attempts to suppress the population count came as Trump administration officials successfully shortened the Census schedule by two weeks. Critics contend that the count was cut short so the Trump administration could enforce an order to exclude undocumented immigrants from the count.Under-counting a given area in the Census suppresses the allocation of resources to that area and skews congressional districts.The Associated Press reports the Census Bureau has denied that it attempted to falsify information during the 2020 census, but the AP has reported that similar instructions were sent to other regions. 1649

Not too long ago, to keep him company, a friend brought him a boy cat named Fluffy.Over the first few weeks they had together, Williams says he and Fluffy hit it off right away.“I looked at him and hey, I just fell in love with him,” said Williams.As it’s safe to say we all do with our pets, Williams talked to Fluffy quite a lot. When the senior got calls on his cellphone, he’d joke around with Fluffy then too.“The phone would ring, and I would say ‘ring-a-ding,’” said Williams. “And I didn’t know he’d pick up on it.”Then, a few days ago, Williams slipped and fell getting out of the shower. He couldn’t move.“My arm was pinned under me, and the hours kept going by,” said Williams. “16 hours…”From roughly 8 a.m. until midnight later that day, Williams laid in agony. The door was closed, and his Life Alert was in the other room on the charger. His phone was in the bathroom with him, but just out of reach on the counter.Lucky for Williams, Fluffy was in the room too. And whether or not he knew it, he’d been training Fluffy for this moment accidentally.“So I said ‘ring-a-ding Fluffy, you’re my only hope,’” Williams said, tearing up. “And he was. It wasn’t even five minutes later I felt something hit my hand. And I’m here because of it.”The cat had brought Williams his phone and he was able to dial 911.“I relive it a million times. The American Academy of Pediatrics is clarifying their stance on reopening schools this fall, pushing for science-based decisions and calling on Congress to provide necessary federal funding for campuses to reopen safely.The AAP, joining together with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), National Education Association (NEA) and AASA, The School Superintendents Association, said they share the desire to welcome children back to schools this fall, however safety concerns must be considered.“Returning to school is important for the healthy development and well-being of children, but we must pursue re-opening in a way that is safe for all students, teachers and staff. Science should drive decision-making on safely reopening schools. Public health agencies must make recommendations based on evidence, not politics,” the statement reads.They go on to say a one-size-fits-all approach is not appropriate, given the nature of the pandemic across the country. 975
